Drawing on draftsmanship, painting, literature, and installations, Michael Tedja's oeuvre erupts into a flamboyant and visually playful whole. His boisterous storms of imagery recall the CoBrA movement of artists from Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam briefly banded together after World War II. Aiming to banish bourgeois rituals as well as theorizing around avant-garde art, they embraced expressionist spontaneity, an unrestrained use of vivid colors, folkloric elements, handwriting and graffiti. A large part of the legal debate about European social integration has been focussed on social dialogue, and in particular on the role of European collective agreements, as formerly regulated by the Maastricht Agreement on Social Policy, but now incorporated into the Amsterdam Treaty. In this volume, an attempt is made to conceptualise the function of European collective bargaining, based on an analysis of the Treaty provisions specifically dealing collective bargaining, but going beyond the Treaty in several respects. Taking an inter-disciplinary approach, the book seeks to broaden the analysis of European collective bargaining, placing it within the broader institutional context of the phenomenon usually referred to as "EC regulatory deficit". Against this background the author gives proper recognition to the different factors - legal, theoretical, institutional, political and industrial-relations oriented - which converge in the field of European collective bargaining. The author concludes that in the overall context of a general redefinition of Community regulatory strategies, European collective bargaining should be viewed not as evidence of an incomplete supranational legal pluralism but rather as a construction of Community law.

This volume contains the proceedings of an international conference entitled "Lay Bibles in Europe 1450-1800". The conference took place in Amsterdam in April 2004 and was organized by "Biblia sacra", a joint Dutch-Flemish research group. The clamor for Bibles in the vernacular flourished within lay renewal movements of the late 14th century, including groups like the Brethren and Sisters of the Common Life. In the early 16th century, humanists like Erasmus and Lefevre d'Etaples stimulated vernacular Bible reading. As the Protestant Reformation became established, lay Bibles were produced on a large scale. In reaction to this development, Catholic theologians issued 'orthodox' Bible translations in various vernaculars based on the Vulgate. In sum, from the 15th to the 18th century, editions from various confessional or ideological backgrounds appeared throughout Western Europe. Of course, the invention and spread of the printing press greatly enhanced the distribution of these editions. The essays collected in this volume approach "Lay Bibles in Europe 1450-1800" from various perspectives, including the history of books, art history and church history.

Whether a reimagining a Greek myth in order to infuse it with a contemporary pain, extending empathy and humorous Mitmenschkeit to both denizens and voyeurs of the world's freakshows, or describing with wit and experience the spiritual affects of medical conditions, the book is infused with restrained but piercing emotion, a subtle metrical ear, and enough daring and wit to write in rhymed couplets to take the obvious, easy way. For instance, with the last line of “De Wallen, Amsterdam”: “The moon above the spires, a sexless disk,/eyes us coolly as an odalisque.” I so admire the refusal to make that last line scan as a perfect iambic pentameter line. It would be so easy; all you’d have to do is add the grammatical, but colloquial, “as.” Which would have ruined the line, and the poem. Oh, and the rhymes in the canzone! Libraries as a building type have been subjected to substantial changes in particular in the past ten years. Milestones such as Rem Koolhaas’ Seattle Central Library from 2004 reinvented the typology completely and reflected a development from elitist temple of learning to a public living room. Hybrids between library and department store or theater were conceived. Today, the ubiquity of electronic devices and media needs to be taken into account by the designer: every new library has areas without any books now. This work of reference explains systematically all technological and planning requirements of library design. Whether policing male sodomy during the Medici rule in Florence or accusing the French aristocracy of monstrous sexuality in the wake of the French Revolution, the bourgeoisie weaponized both sexual constraint and sexual freedom in order to produce and control a reliable and regimented labor class and subordinate it to civil society and the state. Only by grasping sexuality as a field of social contention and the site of class conflict, Chitty contends, can we embark on a politics that destroys sexuality as a tool and an effect of power and open a front against the forces that keep us unfree.

Herman Falke was born in Holland in 1928. At a very early age he chose the religious life and enrolled at a Junior Seminary outside Amsterdam. However, the German occupation of Holland changed his reality as a young teenager. He learned how to survive, seek safety, and obey the occupiers’ orders. His daily routine was digging trenches along the German border. Food became scarce and men between the ages of 16 to 50 were rounded up in the local villages, and resistance was met with a firing squad for disobeying orders. The arrival of Canadian forces across Holland in 1945 brought an end to the Occupation and Herman returned to the Seminary to complete his studies. He also began assisting at church services and became the resident organist. Today, at 93 years of age, Father Falke still uses his art to temper the sanity in his life. He has formulated an approach and concept to express the religious stories he has found using ceramics and wood.
