A gripping memoir written by a 96-year-old Jewish Holocaust survivor about his escape from Nazi-occupied Poland in the 1930's and his adventures with the French Resistance during World War II In 1937, as the Nazi Party tightened its grip on the city of Danzig (now Gdansk, Poland), Justus Rosenberg’s parents made the wrenching decision to send their son to Paris, where he would have the hope of finishing high school and going on to university in safety. He was sixteen years old, and he would not see his family again for sixteen years more. Even after war broke out in 1939, life in France was peaceful for a time—but when the Nazis pushed toward Paris in the spring of 1940, Justus was forced to flee south to Toulouse. There, a chance meeting put Justus in contact with Varian Fry, the American journalist who ran a refugee network that aided several thousand Jews in escaping Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. With his German background, understanding of French cultural, and fluency in several languages, including English, Justus was ideally positioned to thrive in Fry’s network, coming to master an underworld of counterfeit documents, whispered passwords, black market currency, opportunistic gangsters, and clandestine mountain passes. Justus would spend the rest of the war working for Fry and later the French Resistance, helping to provide safe passage for many intellectuals and artists on the run from the Nazis, among them Hannah Arendt, Marc Chagall, Andre Breton, and Max Ernst. In 1927, forty students about to enter the eighth grade arrived, along with their teacher, to open the doors to their small, two-room schoolhouse for the first time. There were already ten public high schools in Montgomery County, Maryland. But these students weren’t allowed to attend any of them because of the color of their skin.As a result of aggressive determination and tireless persistence by Montgomery County School Board pioneers, Rockville Colored High School, became the first high school in the county for African-American boys and girls eager to continue their education.Finally, these students had a school of their own and could finally see the hope and opportunity that a secondary education offered.Struggling through economic, social, and transportation challenges, they journeyed towards their diplomas. The first class chose as their motto “Before Us Lies the Timber—Let Us Build,” reflecting their dreams for the future. Due to economic circumstances, only nine of the original forty students finished. Yet, over the next 29 years, the population of black county residents able to earn a high school education became so large that, twice, new schools had to be built to accommodate them—first, Lincoln High School replaced Rockville Colored High, and later Carver High School replaced Lincoln High. The students in these years were given the chance to live their lives doing the things that all teenagers do. They founded a National Honor Society chapter, elected May Day Queens, and formed school baseball and basketball teams. They crammed for finals, wrote farewell poems for their beloved teachers, and marched to “Pomp and Circumstance” at commencement. The author was himself a graduate of Lincoln High in 1945. Warrick S. Hill has assembled a wealth of not just historical information, but personal stories as well. In 1791, General Arthur St. Clair led the United States army in a campaign to destroy a complex of Indian villages at the Maumee River in northwestern Ohio. Almost within reach of their objective, St. Clair's 1,400 men were attacked by about one thousand Indians. The U.S. force was decimated, suffering nearly one thousand casualties in killed and wounded, while Indian casualties numbered only a few dozen. But despite the lopsided result, it wouldn't appear to carry much significance; it involved only a few thousand people, lasted less than three hours, and the outcome, which was never in doubt, was permanently reversed a mere three years later. Neither an epic struggle nor a clash that changed the course of history, the battle doesn't even have a name. Yet, as renowned Native American historian Colin Calloway demonstrates here, St. Clair's Defeat--as it came to be known-- was hugely important for its time. It was both the biggest victory the Native Americans ever won, and, proportionately, the biggest military disaster the United States had suffered. Thirty years ago, the separateness of different intellectual disciplines was an unquestioned axiom of intellectual procedure. By the mid-nineteen-seventies, however, even within the natural sciences proper, a shift from narrowly disciplinary preoccupations to more interdisciplinary issues had made it possible to reopen questions about he cosmological significance of the scientific world picture and scarcely possible any longer to rule out all religious cosmology and "unscientific." This book, the product of both a professional and personal quest, follow the debate about cosmology--the theory of the universe--as it has changed from 1945 to 1982. The open essay, "Scientific Mythology" reflects the influence of Stephen Toulmin's postwar study with Ludwig Wittgenstein in its skepticism about the naive extrapolation of scientific concepts into nonscientific contexts. Skepticism gradually gives way to qualified optimism that there may be "still a real chance of working outward from the natural sciences into a larger cosmological realm" in a series of essays on the cosmological speculations of individual scientists, including Arthur Koestler, Jacques Monod, Carl Sagan, and others.
