WW Norton & Co Surviving Survival: The Art and Science of Resilience
A traumatic or near-death experience can change every aspect of the survivor’s being. It can erase the body’s learned adaptations, and in some cases, those who live through such a shock suffer more in the aftermath than they did during the actual crisis. In all cases, they must work hard to reinvent themselves. Combining harrowing tales of survival with lucid explanations of the science behind the body’s reactions to trauma, Surviving Survival offers a valuable and “intriguing argument about the adaptability of the human spirit” (National Geographic Traveler).

Scheidegger und Spiess AG, Verlag Enraptured by Color: Printmaking in Late 19th-Century France
Enraptured by Color presents some 170 French colour prints from the 19th century. Using colour at that time was a major factor in the market success of lithography, more than a century after its invention, as well as of other techniques. This new book, published to coincide with an exhibition at Musee Jenisch Vevey, is a compendium of the art of colour printmaking, using the exhibits as examples for all aspects of the trade. Introductory and topical essays and a selection of rare documents alongside the featured works reveal the effects of polychromy and the technical processes behind it in artistic production in France around 1890. The book explains in detail how colour engravings are made and how they differ from a colour print. It investigates the aesthetic purpose of using colour and how it was exploited by important artists such as Pierre Bonnard, Paul Gauguin, Odilon Redon, Paul Signac, Edouard Vuillard, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

Liberty Fund Inc David Hume: Prophet of the Counter Revolution, 2nd Edition
Though Edmund Burke is usually identified as the first to articulate the principles of a modern conservative political tradition, he was actually preceded by a Scotsman who is better known for espousing a brilliant concept of scepticism. David Hume was undoubtedly the eighteenth-century British writer whose works were most widely known and acclaimed on the Continent during the later Enlightenment period. Hume's impact (in France) was of undeniable importance, greater even for a time than the related influence of Burke, although it represents a contribution to French counter-revolutionary thought which, unlike that of Burke, has been almost totally ignored by historians to this day.

Taylor & Francis Inc Clinical Procedures for Medical Technology Specialists
As healthcare becomes more complex, the integration of all members of the team becomes even more important. Part of this integration requires that all team members have a grasp of the fundamentals of the medical and surgical treatments they are involved in. Written specifically for paramedical professionals who support doctors and nurses, Clinical Procedures for Medical Technology Specialists presents a clear and concise description of the more common diagnostic and treatment procedures used in current medical care. While a great many texts describe medical and surgical procedures, there are few, if any, aimed at the large, diverse group of professionals who directly support the medical system. Moreover, these sources tend to have more detail than is required for a paramedical professional. Carefully organized in an encyclopedic format that allows easy access to just the right amount of information, this book supplies nonclinical members of the modern integrated healthcare team with a more complete perspective of the clinical experiences of the clients of the system — the patients.

New York University Press Mapping Jewish Identities
Is Jewish identity flourishing or in decline? Community leaders and scholarly researchers continually seek to determine the attitudes, beliefs, and activities that best measure Jewish identity. At issue, according to these studies, is the very survival of the Jewish community itself. But such studies rarely ask what actually is being examined when we attempt to assess "Jewish identity" or any identity. Most tend to assume that identity is a preexisting, relatively fixed frame of reference reflecting shared cultural and historical experiences. Drawing on recent work in such fields as cultural studies, poststructuralist theory, postmodern philosophy, and feminist theory, Mapping Jewish Identities challenges this premise. Contesting conventional approaches to Jewish identity, contributors argue that Jewish identity should be conceptualized as an ongoing dynamic process of "becoming" in response to changing cultural and social conditions rather than as a stable defining body of traits. Contributors, including Daniel Boyarin, Laura Levitt, Adi Ophir, and Gordon Bearn, examine such topics as American Jews' desires to connect with a lost immigrant past through photography, the complicated function of the Holocaust in the identity formation of contemporary Jews, the impact of the struggle with the Palestinians on Israeli group identity construction, and the ways in which repressed voices such as those of women, Mizrahim, and Israeli Arabs have changed our ways of thinking about Jewish and Israeli identity.
