Actes Sud Leila Menchari
Illustrates Menchari's intricate, ornate oeuvre. Joseph Akel, L''OfficielFor more than 30 years, Leïla Menchari (born 1928) was responsible for designing the traffic-stopping window displays at Hermès' prestigious flagship store at 24 rue du Faubourg-Saint-Honoré in Paris. Menchari's aesthetic vision and her sense of color and texture created magnificent installations that brought the best out of silk and leather. Born in Tunis and considering herself a citizen of the world, Menchari was inspired by her journeys to the Near and Far East, her encounters with extraordinary figures of the art world and her Beaux-Arts training. For Hermès she created Egyptian archaeological sites with sand and crumbling statues and iconic scenes of Paris with monuments crafted out of organza, among many other fantasies. Featuring a preface by Hermès CEO Axel Dumas, this extensively illustrated, sumptuous publication focuses on 137 Hermès storefronts created by Leïla Mencha

Birlinn General The Edinburgh Skating Club
When you look at a painting, what do you really see? When eighteenth-century poet Alison Cockburn accepts a light-hearted challenge from her friend Katherine Hume to live as a man, in order to infiltrate Edinburgh’s all-male skating club, little do they both realise how her new identity will shape their future. And in the present, art historian Claire Sharp receives a mysterious request: to settle once and for all the true provenance of the iconic painting The Skating Minister. The Edinburgh Skating Club is the tale of one woman's mission to infiltrate a male-dominated society. Imaginative, romantic and ultimately moving, this time-shift adventure celebrates the women overlooked by history – and, above all, love, in all its unexpected forms.

Collective Ink Woman`s Way, A – The transformative journey from hurt to happiness
"A Woman's Way" is an optimistic account of transformative growth which maps the journey from inner turmoil to confidence, joy and fulfilment. This is a spiritual journey that is offered to all in early to middle adulthood but in this instance, the wisdom of a group of twelve women has been tapped to illuminate the process. Through an economical sharing of their experiences, the features of this journey are brought to light and ideas for getting through it are recommended. Describing the path that they have trodden removes its mystique and diminishes any fear that other travellers may have of exploring this (inner) landscape.Although challenging, it is an exciting journey that enables women to find their true expression and live vigorously and vitally in the world. Many who tread this path report the arrival at their destination in the most glowing terms as the dysfunctional behaviours of the past are shed in favour of self-confidence and self-responsibility. This is called the 'becoming' journey to suggest its ongoing nature and the dynamic of emerging beauty.

Boydell & Brewer Ltd Changing Pedagogies for Children in Eighteenth-Century England
Using pedagogy as a lens through which to explore issues of gender, social class, power and hegemony, Cohen's study makes a major new contribution to the study of education in eighteenth-century England. Through a detailed examination of contemporary methodologies, curricula, and practices this book brings together topics often treated separately: the education of boys and girls of the middling and the upper classes. Further, this study widens the scope of our definition of education to include the often-under-valued field of "accomplishments". Indeed, Cohen shows that accomplishments were a formal part of male and female education, with carefully theorised pedagogies, challenging the enduring perception that these subjects were superficial. Subject specific chapters on Latin and geography pedagogies examine the relations between these subjects and the competitions which shaped and produced them. While Latin pedagogy dominated eighteenth-century education, geography, as a modern subject, had to develop a new normative pedagogy. Cohen shows that girls were not excluded from learning a science like geography, and that the contemporary perception of the inferiority of their education as opposed to that of boys was constructed as part of the classic vs. modern debate. Further, chapters on debates surrounding public and private education, the Grand Tour, and conversation show that pedagogy is the thread linking education, gender, social class and politics. This book will be essential reading for historians of education, childhood and gender.
