Rowman & Littlefield Why We Climb: The World's Most Inspiring Climbers
Why We Climb is a celebration, in word and image, of those aspects of the climbing life that are most universal, meaningful, and long lasting— the strong connection to partners and nature; the physical and mental mastery required (and how to achieve it); the rewards of exploring oneself and the world through climbing. Through interviews with some of North America’s most notable climbers the book undertakes a quest to find the soul of climbing— asking what compels men and women to dedicate their lives to the challenges and deprivations of living in a vertical world? What are the sacrifices and what are the rewards? And most importantly, can the lessons learned on cliff faces, frozen waterfalls, and alpine peaks— lessons of respect, discipline, commitment, humility and simplicity—be brought home and used to benefit society as a whole?

JCB Mohr (Paul Siebeck) Pauline Communities as 'Scholastic Communities': A Study of the Vocabulary of 'Teaching' in 1 Corinthians, 1 and 2 Timothy and Titus
Edwin Judge's description of early Christian communities as 'scholastic communities' provides the starting point of a search for a sociological description of the Christian communities portrayed in 1 Corinthians, 1 and 2 Timothy and Titus. An original methodology uses a multi-layered exegetical approach to study every occurrence of the vocabulary of 'teaching' in the letters. The focus is on the activity of teaching (e.g., participants, method, manner, purpose, result, etc). The vocabulary represents ten semantic groupings, which shed further light on the place and practice of education in the communities ( core-teaching, speaking, traditioning, announcing, revealing, worshipping, commanding, correcting, remembering / imitation, and false teaching). Claire S. Smith supports and develops Judge's 1960 description, advancing on it by showing that the communities are better described as 'learning communities' with horizontal (human-human) and vertical (divine-human) dimensions.

Peeters Publishers A Divine Round Trip: The Literary and Christological Function of the Descent/Ascent Leitmotif in the Gospel of John
How does the Evangelist utilize the Descent/Ascent Leitmotif to shape the telling of Jesus’ story, and what is he conveying by incorporating this round trip language? The argument of this book is that the Descent/Ascent Leitmotif, which includes the language of not only descending and ascending, but also coming, going, and being sent, performs a significant literary and christological function in the Gospel of John. The Evangelist’s Descent/Ascent Leitmotif becomes the Gospel’s organizing principle, drawing together this constellation of verbs and a number of christological themes, including Jesus’ origin, identity, relationship to God, authority, signs and works, life, and glory. Using a thematic structural method, this book illustrates the transforming influence of the Leitmotif on these themes from which John’s Christology emerges. Additionally, this book examines the spatial dimensions and christological importance of the vertical and horizontal depictions of Jesus’ divine round trip.

Forma Edizioni Milan
In recent years, Milan has become a metropolis involved in transformations that are well worthy of interest for the architectural and urbanistic experiments that have been carried out. The complex dialectics between innovation and respect for the existing urban form is the distinctive characteristic of the city: recovery of downgraded neighbourhoods, redevelopment of decommissioned industrial zones, technological experimentation, and vertical development are the aspects that mark Milan as a strongly contemporary city. This guide is being launched in answer to a moment of great focus on Milan. As it guides the reader through the wide range of contemporary architectural projects, it emphasises the unique nature of its complex character. The transformations are still underway and for this reason, it is difficult to foresee how a city of such size will manage to redefine its personal equilibrium: but this too is part of the contemporary nature of Milan.

University of Texas Press Lebanon in Strife: Student Preludes to the Civil War
In this study, an eminent sociologist of the Arab world analyzes student politics in Lebanon and their relationship to the civil war. This focus is part of a larger concern with upheaval in Arab society and with political and social integration in mosaic societies in general. Professor Barakat provides a clear, thorough, and comprehensive analysis of late twentieth century Lebanese society and the dominant ideological veins within it. Lebanon in Strife is a comparative study of Lebanese youth with special emphasis on their alienation from society and politics and their place at the vanguard of social change. The study is set in the context of the continual confrontation between forces for change and the established order in Lebanon, viewed from both a local and an international perspective. The author argues that vertical loyalties (based on religious, ethnic, or regional ties) are more significant than horizontal loyalties (based on socioeconomic class) in determining Lebanese student political behavior and attitudes. However, vertical loyalties are explained in socioeconomic terms, for the two forms of cleavages coincide; and the whole society is composed of religious communities arranged in a hierarchy of power and status. The author shows that these ties conflict with and undermine orderly social change and national unity and that they could account for conditions that have led to civil war in Lebanon. In an epilogue, Professor Barakat relates his analysis of student politics to political developments in Lebanon during the civil war of 1975–1976, including an assessment of the role of Syria and the prospects for a negotiated end to armed struggle in the country. This is the first empirical study of Lebanese political life viewed from the standpoint of its central force for change, the students. It is an invaluable resource for students of the modem Middle East as well as for specialists in sociology, politics, and history. Lebanon in Strife has special relevance to problems of political change and development in the Third World countries, providing a sociopolitical model for the analysis of student politics in traditional and transitional societies.

This authoritative volume presents the key papers that have introduced the theoretical frameworks and the empirical facts that have spurred the interest of scholars in franchising as an organizational form. By combining all these contributions in a single volume, this collection not only highlights the main questions that have been addressed in the literature on franchising, but also illustrates the important role that incentive issues have played in it. As a result, this compilation should be of special interest to economists and management scholars with an interest in franchising but also to those interested in general issues concerning the organization of the firm.

An "effects emblem" is a spectacular, computer-generated visual effect that gives stunning expression to a film's key themes. Although they elicit feelings of astonishment and wonder, effects emblems do not interrupt narrative, but are continuous with story and characterization and highlight the narrative stakes of a film. Focusing on spectacular digital visual effects in live-action films made between 1989 and 2011, Whissel identifies and examines four effects emblems: the illusion of gravity-defying vertical movement, massive digital multitudes or "swarms," photorealistic digital creatures, and morphing "plasmatic" figures. Across films such as Avatar, The Matrix, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Jurassic Park, Titanic, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, these effects emblems heighten the narrative drama by contrasting power with powerlessness, life with death, freedom with constraint, and the individual with the collective.

Arquine Francisco Pardo: Imperfections
Since 2015, Mexican architect Francisco Pardo has run his own practice in fast-growing and fast changing Mexico City. His projects have reflected how Mexico is transforming the idea of the Latin American city: part ancient, part colonial, part futuristic. His Havre 69 project, created with his partner from architecture firm at103, Julio Amezcua, repurposes a 100-year-old residence for upper-middle-class families into offices, 12 separate residences, a bakery and a restaurant. On the one hand, Pardo exposes large sections of brick and maintains the original tile, while on the other, he builds modernist concrete and glass boxes that frame the original facade. Likewise, the architect's Milan44 project takes an auto-parts store in the warehouse in the Roma neighborhood of Mexico City and creates a vertical urban market that brings the storefront street level onto each level of the structure. The architecture of Francisco Pardo reflects a fresh direction in the vast project of building Latin America into the future.

Inspiration at Work Publishing Everest: Surviving the death zone
On the 14th of September 1979, Ronnie Muhl closed the cover of a book titled Everset The Impossible Victory by Peter Habeler. It ignited within him a burning desire to climb to the highest point on our planet and he spent the next 27 years trying to make that dream a reality. In 2006, he found himself high in the Death Zone on Mount Everest facing a life-threatening situation. He made the traumatic decision to turn around with less than 150 vertical metres to go before reaching the summit. That decision saved his life and afforded him the opportunity of returning to the mountain in 2007. This time, as the leader of the first successful South African expedition to the North side of Mount Everest, he became the seventh South African to summit via the North-east Ridge. This is the inspiring tale of the tears and triumphs associated with surviving the Death Zone.

Amsterdam University Press Dynasties and State Formation in Early Modern Europe
In state formation research, princely houses have been a blind spot. The development of states has been discussed from many perspectives, like interstate competition, internal social conflicts, fiscal-military developments, etc., but at the centre of most European states, there was a princely house. These ruling houses have been overlooked in studies about state formation. What’s more, when discussing such dynasties, the vertical chronological perspective (grandfather-father-son) is all dominating, for instance in the focus on dynastic continuity, dynastic culture and representation, and the like. This collection of essays highlights the horizontal perspective (ruler, all children, siblings, cousins), in asking how the members of a princely family acted as a power network. The quest is to develop an understanding how this family network interplayed with other factors in the state formation process. This volume brings together existing knowledge of the topic with the aim of exchanging insights and furthering knowledge.

Rutgers University Press American Cinema of the 1910s: Themes and Variations
It was during the teens that filmmaking truly came into its own. Notably, the migration of studios to the West Coast established a connection between moviemaking and the exoticism of Hollywood. The essays in American Cinema of the 1910s explore the rapid developments of the decade that began with D. W. Griffith's unrivaled one-reelers. By mid-decade, multi-reel feature films were profoundly reshaping the industry and deluxe theaters were built to attract the broadest possible audience. Stars like Mary Pickford, Charlie Chaplin, and Douglas Fairbanks became vitally important and companies began writing high-profile contracts to secure them. With the outbreak of World War I, the political, economic, and industrial groundwork was laid for American cinema's global dominance. By the end of the decade, filmmaking had become a true industry, complete with vertical integration, efficient specialization and standardization of practices, and self-regulatory agencies.

Ebury Publishing Lateral Thinking: An Introduction
Why do some people always seem to have new ideas while others of equal intelligence never do? Lateral Thinking is Edward de Bono’s original portrayal of what lateral thinking is, how it works and how to use it to develop your own potential for thinking and problem solving.First published in 1967 as The Use of Lateral Thinking, this classic international bestseller remains as relevant to learning, problem solving and creative thinking today as when it was first published. De Bono argues that conventional vertical thinking often inhibits our ability to solve problems and come up with new ideas. He then shows that lateral thinking is a far easier and more natural way to generate simple, sound and effective ideas and offers guidance on how to develop your own ability to think laterally. Lateral thinking is a technique that anyone can learn and benefit from.
