Hal Leonard Corporation The Beat Generation FAQ: All That's Left to Know About the Angelheaded Hipsters
ÊThe Beat Generation FAQÊ is an informative and entertaining look at the enigmatic authors and cutting-edge works that shaped this fascinating cultural and literary movement. Disillusioned with the repression and conformity encompassing post-World War II life in the United States the Beat writers sought creative alternatives to the mind-numbing banality of modern culture.ÞBeat Generation writers were no strangers to controversy: Both Allen Ginsberg's prophetic William Blakean-style poem Howl (1956) and William S. Burroughs' groundbreaking novel ÊNaked LunchÊ (1959) led to obscenity trials while Jack Kerouac's highly influential novel ÊOn the RoadÊ (1957) was blamed by the establishment for corrupting the nation's youth and continues to this day to serve as a beacon of hipster culture and the bohemian lifestyle.ÞThe Beat writers shared a vision for a new type of literature one that escaped the boundaries of academia and employed an organic use of language inspired by the spontaneity and improvisational nature of jazz music and abstract expressionism (Kerouac coined this writing style spontaneous prose ). In search of deeper meaning Beat Generation writers experimented not only with language but also with spirituality art drugs sexuality and unconventional lifestyles. Although the movement as a whole flamed out quickly in the early 1960s replaced by the onset of the hippie counterculture the Beats made an indelible mark on the nation's consciousness and left a long-lasting influence on its art and culture. This book details the movement ä its works creative forces and its legacy.

Hal Leonard Corporation The Clash FAQ: All That's Left to Know About the Clash City Rockers
Founded by guitarist Mick Jones and fronted by the legendary Joe Strummer the Clash had the charisma of Elvis the integrity of the Beatles and the swagger of the Rolling Stones. Through a series of influential singles and stirring concerts the Clash not only outlasted their rivals the Sex Pistols but also prospered and broke through in the US of A a feat matched by no other UK punk-rock band.ÞWith the classic ÊLondon CallingÊ and revolutionary triple album ÊSandinista!Ê the Clash helped popularize both reggae and hip-hop thereby indoctrinating the record buying public to world music. By 1982 members of the Clash found themselves not only with a hit album (ÊCombat RockÊ) but also playing opening sets during the Who's first retirement tour. It appeared the Clash would fill this gap. It was not to be. A series of self-inflicted wounds led to a legendary downfall mere months after appearing in front on their largest audience ever at the U.S. Festival in 1983. Strummer and bassist Paul Simonon soldiered on with the underrated Clash Round Two but eventually disintegrated under the weight of their manager's mind games.ÞIn ÊThe Clash FAQÊ author Gary J. Jucha covers the band's inception and emergence in the early British punk scene all of the studio albums as well as bootlegs the band's success in the U.S. the lineup shifts tours and more. Hal Leonard Corporation Shatner
In the early months of 1966, a handsome, hardworking thirty-five-year-old Canadian-born actor named William Shatner was cast as Captain Kirk in Star Trek, a troubled, low-budget science-fiction television series set to premiere that fall on NBC. Star Trek struggled for viewers and lasted only three seasons, but it found a huge, rabidly dedicated audience when it premiered in syndication following its cancellation—turning Shatner into a pop-culture icon and launching him on a career path he never could have imagined after graduating from McGill University with an economics degree twenty years earlier. As he approaches his ninetieth year, he's still working at a furious pace as a man of boundless contradictions: by turns one of the most dissected, disliked, revered, respected, mocked, imitated, and beloved stars in the show business firmament. Shatner takes a comprehensive look at this singular performer, using archival sources and information culled from interviews with friends and colleagues to transport readers through William Shatner's remarkably bumpy career: his spectacular failures and triumphs; tragedies, including the shocking death of his third wife, Nerine; and, ultimately, the resilience Shatner has shown, time and again, in the face of overwhelming odds. Author Michael Seth Starr unravels the mystery of William Shatner, stripping away the many myths associated with his personal life and his relationships with fellow actors, presenting a no-holds-barred, unvarnished look at the unique career of an inimitable performer.

Hal Leonard Corporation Cervantes's Eight Interludes
Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616) is Spain's most famous author primarily because of his celebrated novel ÊDon QuixoteÊ. His first love however was the theater for which he wrote extensively. His ÊInterludesÊ published 400 years ago in 1615 are short comic plays that explore the underbelly of Renaissance Spanish society. Their characters include hillbillies and con artists pimps and prostitutes adulterous wives and jealous husbands and an array of other comical figures. Cervantes's treatment of them is simultaneously critical and sympathetic. Although interludes tend to be works of light comedy Cervantes often imbues his with deeper themes.ÞCharles Patterson a scholar of Hispanic theater has created translations of the ÊInterludesÊ that are true to the earthiness of the originals but designed to be readily playable for today's actors and accessible to modern audiences. This book includes an introduction that places the plays in context briefly describing the life of Cervantes theater in early modern Spain Cervantes's interludes and Patterson's approach to translating them. Casual readers theater and literature students and professional actors alike will delight in these comedic gems that reveal a less familiar side of one of history's greatest writers.

Hal Leonard Corporation Sympathy for the Drummer: Why Charlie Watts Matters
Sympathy for the Drummer: Why Charlie Watts Matters is both a gonzo rush—capturing the bristling energy of the Rolling Stones and the times in which they lived—and a wide-eyed reflection on why the Greatest Rock 'n' Roll Band in the World needed the world's greatest rock 'n' roll drummer. Across five decades, Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts has had the best seat in the house. Charlie Watts, the anti-rock star—an urbane jazz fan with a dry wit and little taste for the limelight—was witness to the most savage years in rock history, and emerged a hero, a warrior poet. With his easy swing and often loping, uneven fills, he found nuance in a music that often had little room for it, and along with his greatest ally, Keith Richards, he gave the Stones their swaggering beat. While others battled their drums, Charlie played his modest kit with finesse and humility, and yet his relentless grooves on the nastiest hard-rock numbers of the era ("Gimme Shelter," "Street Fighting Man," "Brown Sugar," "Jumpin' Jack Flash," etc.) delivered a dangerous authenticity to a band that on their best nights should have been put in jail. Author Mike Edison, himself a notorious raconteur and accomplished drummer, tells a tale of respect and satisfaction that goes far beyond drums, drumming, and the Rolling Stones, ripping apart the history of rock'n'roll, and celebrating sixty years of cultural upheaval. He tears the sheets off of the myths of music making, shredding the phonies and the frauds, and unifies the frayed edges of disco, punk, blues, country, soul, jazz, and R&B—the soundtrack of our lives.Highly opinionated, fearless, and often hilarious, Sympathy is as an unexpected treat for music fans and pop culture mavens, as edgy and ribald as the Rolling Stones at their finest, never losing sight of the sex and magic that puts the roll in the rock —the beat, that crazy beat!—and the man who drove the band, their true engine, the utterly irreplaceable Charlie Watts.

Hal Leonard Corporation I Am Michael Alago: Breathing Music. Signing Metallica. Beating Death.
Musician, nightlife impresario, record label executive, photographer, and author, Michael Alago takes readers through this amazing journey that is his life. Alago grew up in Brooklyn, New York, in a large, spirited, and devoted Puerto Rican family. Through his early passion for music, art, theater, and photography, he soon found himself rubbing elbows with many downtown NYC scene makers, from Stiv Bators to Jean Michel Basquiat, Cherry Vanilla and Wayne County to Deborah Harry and Robert Mapplethorpe. As an underage teenager going to Max's Kansas City, CBGB, and various art galleries, Alago also began running The Dead Boys fan club. A few years later, he became the assistant music director for legendary nightclubs the Ritz and the Red Parrot. At age twenty-four, he began a storied career as an A&R executive at Elektra Records that started with signing Metallica in the summer of 1984, changing the entire landscape of rock 'n' roll and heavy metal. Alago continued to work in A&R for both Palm Pictures and Geffen Records. He was thrilled to executive-produce albums by Cyndi Lauper, Public Image Ltd, White Zombie, and Nina Simone. In the late 1980s, he was diagnosed with HIV, which manifested into full-blown AIDS ten years later. He survived to continue his music career, but in 2005, he left music to pursue his other love: photography. Alago went on to publish three bestselling books: Rough Gods, Brutal Truth, and Beautiful Imperfections with German-based publisher Bruno Gmünder. He has since overcome his longtime addiction to drugs and alcohol. In his clean and sober life, he has reconnected with his family, continues to be a working photographer as well as record producer, and only through the grace of his 12-Step program is he able to live this big, beautiful life. In 2017, a documentary directed by Drew Stone and produced by Michael Alex on Alago's wildly successful career in music was released in theaters and on Netflix, entitled Who the Fuck Is That Guy? The Fabulous Journey of Michael Alago.

Hal Leonard Corporation Fifty Shades of Crimson: Robert Fripp and King Crimson
Features interviews with Bill Bruford, Peter Giles, Gordon Haskell, Judy Dyble and more . . . In 1969 five young Englishmen calling themselves King Crimson altered the course of rock music, and despite a revolving-door lineup, the band has continued to innovate and inspire for more than fifty years. Fifty Shades of Crimson tells the story of this legendary band and of the unique English guitarist Robert Fripp it revolves around. With a deep passion for the music, author Pete Tomsett celebrates the achievements of Fripp and the array of incredible talent that has passed through Crimson, while not shying away from the many behind-the-scenes difficulties. Getting signed after supporting The Rolling Stones at Hyde Park, Crimson shot to fame with their debut album, In the Court of the Crimson King, becoming one of the most influential bands of that era and triggering the rise of prog rock. While going through countless personnel, including Greg Lake, Bill Bruford and John Wetton, rejecting Elton John and Bryan Ferry along the way, they have put out many highly acclaimed albums and to this day maintain a big international following. In their early years Fripp's band reached the same commercial heights as the likes of David Bowie and Pink Floyd. However, as an intellectual who despised the practices of the music business, Fripp preferred innovation over chasing big sales. In 1974 he withdrew from mainstream music, becoming involved with the Fourth Way philosophy, but was eventually tempted back and reformed Crimson to much acclaim in the eighties. As well as also having collaborations with Brian Eno, Andy Summers and others, Fripp has created new forms of instrumental music, run his own idiosyncratic guitar courses and set up an ethical record company. Both genius and 'a special sort of awkward', Fripp has never been afraid to take his music where no one has gone before, and Crimson have been a powerful influence on everyone from Genesis and Yes to Roxy Music and Radiohead, creating a legacy that will live on for decades more!

Hal Leonard Corporation Mathilde Wesendonck, Isolde's Dream
Truly great compositions spring like Athena from Zeus' skull at the juncture of genius and passion. In ÊMathilde Wesendonck: Isolde's DreamÊ author Judith Cabaud calls on a host of heretofore undiscovered resources to tell the story of Mathilde Wesendonck muse and paramour to Richard Wagner and later Johannes Brahms. Alma Mahler eat your heart out.ÞIn or about August 1857 Richard Wagner's character changed. He abandoned ÊDer Ring des NibelungenÊ the Gesamtkunstwerk he'd begun work on nearly a decade earlier tore through a short set of songs now known as the ÊWesendonck LiederÊ and dove headlong into ÊTristan und IsoldeÊ eine Handlung whose seminal influence would ricochet down the ensuing century of Western romantic music. Why the dramatic shift?ÞWagner had been struck by lightning ä twice. The first bolt was sighted across Europe; his name was Arthur Schopenhauer. The second was restricted to a insular social world centered at the estate of Otto Wesendonck one of Wagner's patrons. Her name was Mathilde Wesendonck and this is her story.

Hal Leonard Corporation U2’s The Joshua Tree: Planting Roots in Mythic America
U2 planted the seeds for The Joshua Tree during an existential journey through America. As Irishmen in the 1970s, the band grew up with the belief that America was a place of freedom and prosperity, a symbol of hope and a refuge for all people. However, global politics of the 1980s undermined that impression and fostered hypocritical policies that manipulated Americans and devastated people around the world. Originally conceived as "The Two Americas," The Joshua Tree was U2's critique of America. Rather than living up to the ideal that the country was "an idea that belongs to people who need it most," the band found that America sacrificed equality and justice for populism and fascism. This book explores the political, social, and cultural themes rooted in The Joshua Tree when it was originally released in 1987 and how those themes resonated as a response to the election of Donald Trump when U2 toured for the album's 30th anniversary. The author juxtaposes the band's existential journey through America with his own journey connecting with his Irish roots by becoming a citizen in the age of Trump and places U2's and The Joshua Tree's relevance in context with the current political climate.
