In January 1959, ten experienced young skiers set out for Mount Otorten in the far north of Russia. While one of the skiers fell ill and returned., the remaining nine lost their way and ended up on another mountain slope known as Kholat Syakhl (or ‘Mountain of the Dead’). On the night of 1 February 1959 something or someone caused the skiers to flee their tent in such terror that they used knives to slash their way out. Search parties were sent out and their bodies were found, some with massive internal injuries but with no external marks on them. The autopsy stated the violent injuries were caused by ‘an unknown compelling force’. The area was sealed off for years by the authorities and the full events of that night remained unexplained. Using original research carried out in Russia and photographs from the skier's cameras, Keith McCloskey attempts to explain what happened to the nine young people who lost their lives in the mysterious ‘Dyatlov Pass Incident’.

Germany, divided after World War II into two separate countries, was reunified on October 3, 1990. For the country's rail system, the complex task of unifying two networks with very different rolling stock and systems had just begun. New lines and stations were built to physically unite the network and new trains were introduced to transform services. Many rural regional lines closed as car ownership in the former East Germany increased dramatically. Amazingly, however, none of the former East German narrow-gauge lines that were still steam-operated in 1990 have shut; most still offer daily services while other long-closed narrow-gauge lines have been rebuilt and reopened by enthusiast groups. The Glasgow District Subway was second only to London in the UK and was the third underground system to be built anywhere in the world. Originally operated as a cable railway, it was later electrified and the rolling stock from that era continued to be used until it had become very dilapidated by the 1970s. Following a major modernization programme, it is now operated by the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport and the distinctive orange livery of the modern trains has earned it the local nickname of 'the clockwork orange'. The Underground is laid out as a circular route with the trains on a continuous loop, clockwise and anti-clockwise on the twin lines. It serves fifteen stations on both sides of the Clyde including the ornate St Enoch.
