On the night of 14 July, 1976 - Bastille Day - an elderly German was brutally murdered in a little French village where he had taken refuge from the evil shadow which had dogged him for the past thirty-two years. His killers were never brought to justice; indeed, no real attempt was ever made to track them down, the affair being politically embarrassing to both the French and the German governments. The murdered man was Jochen Peiper, once the dashing leader of one of the most renowned units in the German Army. The shadow which hung over him was his alleged complicity in the murder of over seventy unarmed American soldiers during the Ardennes offensive in the winter of 1944/45. It is certain that Peiper was not at the fateful crossroads near Malmedy at the time the men died, but that is not to say that they were not killed on his orders. Guilty or not, Peiper was tried and imprisoned after the war and on his release might have been said to have paid his debt for his supposed part in what had become known as the Malmedy Massacre. But there were those who thought otherwise.After exhaustive research, this classic work sees Charles Whiting tell the story of this enigmatic man, regarded by some as a brilliant and dashing leader of men, by others as a Nazi war criminal, with the vividness and punch which characterized Peiper's military career. All the facts may never be uncovered but all that are known are recorded here. Perfume is part of the biblical text from Genesis through to Revelation, just as perfume pervades our modern life. Identifying the ingredients used in biblical times is difficult when information and meaning is lost in ancient languages. As expected, biblical perfumes were made from natural products but the range employed is surprisingly different from those of modern perfumes. The biblical ingredients are either defensive substances or products of decay, opening up an avenue of speculation as to why this is so. Charles Sell started his research into this area whilst working at Givaudan, the world’s leading manufacturer of perfumes and flavours. THE COAST: TORRE DEL MAR, TORROX COSTA, NERJA, MARO are well-placed for accessing the itineraries between Canillas de Aceituno and Competa. THE MOUNTAINS: THE SIERRAS DE TEJEDA and ALMIJARA The Sierra is a discrete massif defined by cliffs, gullies and gorges, and culminating in the Iberian Peninsula's westernmost 2000 metre summit (La Maroma, Walk 35), while the Sierra Almijara comprises numerous mini-ranges separated by canyons. The traditional dividing point between the two sierras is Puerto de Competa, which we visit in Walk 36. The joys of these mountains are manifold, including bulbous karstic domes and vertiginous pinnacles, dramatic cliffs draped with ragged crags and grand ridges dominating the glittering blue sea; there are uplands patched with ancient pastures and dotted with the ruins of remote cortijos (farmhouses), there are terraces stippled with olive and almond trees, hillsides swaddled in a buttery blanket of yellow-flowering shrubs, valleys flanked by shady forests of conifer and cork oak, and fabulous ravines twisting between towering chicanes (known as cahorros) and tipping over spectacular waterfalls into deep plunge pools, all accessible within 15 minutes of the coast. THE WHITE VILLAGES The Pueblos Blancos of Andalusia with their whitewashed walls and red-tiled roofs are justly famous and the Axarquia does not disappoint in this respect. The best known pueblos blancos and the main gateway destinations for walkers are Competa and Frigiliana. West of Competa are some of the region's prettiest villages, the two Canillas (Aceituno and Albaida), Sedella, Salares and Archez. Walk! In 1976 a Jersey-based air taxi operator purchased two elderly Dakota aircraft for cargo charters as Air Atlantique. Thus began the saga of an airline that would eventually operate one of the largest fleets of Dakotas in the world, acquire four-engined vintage propliners, diversify into passenger charters and pleasure flying and oil-spill response work, and take over the lease on its Coventry Airport base. From here a fleet of historic aircraft sallied forth to participate in air shows around the UK. The impending retirement of the airline’s founder Mike Collett brought about changes, but the freight charters and pleasure flying continued until new regulations brought passenger flying in the Dakotas to an end. Undaunted, Air Atlantique went on to open an aviation museum and visitor centre at Coventry. This is the story of a unique and much-loved British airline.

This book is the first of two which covers the history of the Great Eastern Railway and its predecessors from the first proposal for a railway in the eastern counties in 1811 for a railway from Islington to Wallasea Island and Mucking to its absorption into the London and North Eastern Railway under the 1923 Grouping of Railways. This volume covers the period from 1811 up to the formation of the Great Eastern Railway in 1862. The history is the first history of the GER since Cecil J. Allen’s history of the railway which was first published in 1955 and which has long been out of print. The book makes use of both previously published works on the GER and its predecessors, but also contemporary documents such as the Directors’ reports to shareholders of the Eastern Counties Railway, timetables, reports in local and national newspapers as well as extracts from selected peoples' diaries. Some of which were not easily available to Allen when he wrote his history of the GER. Incorporating these other sources means the book sheds new light on the Railway’s history. The book is intended for anyone who is either interested in railways and particularly the Great Eastern Railway and the railways of the east of England, but also for anyone who is interested in general in the history of that part of England.
