Professor Pekka Pitkänen (1927 – 2018) was one of the most significant Finnish architects of the post-war period. He is known as a master of concrete buildings and as a staunch supporter of modernist approach to architecture. He won numerous commissions by architectural competitions. The Chapel of the Holy Cross (1963 – 1967) in Turku is usually considered as Pitkänen’s main work. From 1950’s to 1980’s Pitkänen built in Turku numerous residential and commercial buildings, often in co-operation with the building company Urakoitsijat Oy. Together with Ola Laiho and Ilpo Raunio, Pitkänen planned the extension of the Finnish Parliament (1972 – 1978). Late in his career Pitkänen focused on public buildings, the finish of the career was the Turku court building, completed in 1997. The book presents Pitkänen’s architecture through his whole career, based on research of his archive, the presentations of the works in contemporary magazines as well as the memoir of Pitkänen.

This is a book about four cities which were several times, and especially in connection with World War II, forcedly, put into completely new national contexts. This was affected by coercion from outside. The changes included genocide and forced displacement, but preserved built environment testifies past populations and national contexts. This book describes the urban environment in the four cities before World War II, and how the present population handles the memories of the past for future development. In connection with World War II and its aftermaths, many of the four cities residents of Chişinău, Černivci, Lviv and Wrocław were either killed or subject to forced migration beyond the new national borders. People settled in the city environment which still bore the traces of the earlier population and the earlier urban life that had been brutally put to an end. By exploring home culture and daily life, this book aims to capture the actual life of North Koreans who have largely supported the country’s unique but dictatorial political system. In its early decades, the Ethiopian capital, founded in 1886, witnessed a very specific form of architecture. At the beginning of the East African country’s first urbanisation process, a mixture of vernacular knowledge and a new cosmopolitan mindset led to an architectural type that local professionals refer to as the ‘Addis Ababa Style’: Pavilion-like buildings of different sizes, made of stone, earth, and wood, characterised by expressive pinched roofs, generous verandas with curtain walls, and a high degree of detailing. Today, those graceful, appropriate, and nature-based buildings are under threat of being swallowed up due to shortsighted economic interests. In cooperation with the Institute for Architecture in Addis Ababa (EiABC), architects of Berlin’s Technical University studied this typology with regard to its embeddedness in local resources, climatic conditions, and craftsmanship. As such, they employed the ‘Addis Ababa House’ as a case study to discuss the possibility of a non-industrial building type that reflects the desire for a cosmopolitan urban life.

During the Covid-19 pandemic we have been forced to retreat into private shelters and to question the limits of residential typologies. The villa is an obvious example of such a shelter. It has re-emerged as an object of desire, because of the urge to escape the boundaries of our own four walls. Throughout history this typology has been rethought and reinvented by architectural greats who sought to break radically with the tradition of their times. But what does it mean to us to design a villa during a period of isolation and lockdown? The answer is not clear. The villa has always been both a dream home for clients and a means of expression for architects. It combines architecture’s most primitive function – to create a liveable shelter – with an architect’s endeavour to manifest their ideology in a single building. During an online design studio held at the Dessau School of Architecture, students from ten countries discussed the identities of the villa and their cultural context. The design of private shelters helped to overcome the paralysis of public life. This publication showcases some of the next generation’s most promising ideas. Moreover, it aims to explore new methods for online teaching, which could serve as a reference for institutions in a post-COVID world.

The Soviet avant-garde architecture of the 1920s to the mid-1930s has increasingly been attracting attention from researchers worldwide. Yet, in spite of this, entire regions remain unstudied. One of these is the south of Russia. Based on extensive research, this guidebook aims to correct the omission. It explores Russia's South and North Caucasus federal districts: Astrakhanskaya, Volgogradskaya, and Rostovskaya regions, Krasnodarsky kray, Crimea, Kalmykiya, Mineralnye Vody, Dagestan, Kabardino-Balkariya, Karachaevo-Cherkesiya, Severnaya Osetiya, and Chechnya. During the Second World War, the south of Russia was the scene of fighting and mass destruction. Post-war reconstruction saw many buildings redesigned in the neoclassical style and the loss of an entire stratum of avant-garde structures. Since the end of the USSR, the way the surviving buildings have been used and run has been equally destructive. For this reason, the structures examined here are divided into two categories: those that have survived and those that have been lost forever. This volume enables readers to view 100 Soviet avant-garde buildings with their own eyes.

While the book does not seek to provide a complete inventory, its unique documentary format, which deliberately mixes well-known architectural masterpieces with more mundane structures under seven specific building categories, invites viewers to comprehend the intrinsic relationships between these built forms and how their designs have been simultaneously shaped by the advent of the international Modern Movement and adaptions to the local context. Crucially, the uniform framing and composition of these compelling facade images directs attention not only to often overlooked architectural details, but also to the varied informal appropriations that transformed their modernist characters over time. The book aims to serve as a reference and enhance knowledge on modernist architecture of the post-war era in Hong Kong, and will contribute to the discussion of its architectural merit, historic and cultural values.
