Picador Radical Chic and MauMauing the Flak Catchers
Now with an original introduction by David Brooks, Radical Chic and Mau-Mauing the Flak Catchers is a funny and irreverent study of class and status by the master of New Journalism.Tom Wolfe's two-act dissection of 1970s race relations in America is incisive and thought-provoking, an indispensable study in how white pieties have often worked against the interests of Black communities in the country.Wolfe first takes readers back to his original hotbed of 1970s radical chic: the party for the Black Panthers that Leonard Bernstein and his wife, Felicia, hosted at their Park Avenue penthouse. Wolfe's unerring eye for the uncanny feasts on an improbable scene that would morph into today's cocktail activism-well-heeled elites signifying their sympathy with causes related to Black emancipation through hobnobbing.Mau-Mauing the Flak Catchers, meanwhile, unfolds on the other side of the country, in San Francisco's Office of Economic

University of Washington Press Puer Tea: Ancient Caravans and Urban Chic
Puer tea has been grown for centuries in the “Six Great Tea Mountains” of Yunnan Province, and in imperial China it was a prized commodity, traded to Tibet by horse or mule caravan via the so-called Tea Horse Road and presented as tribute to the emperor in Beijing. In the 1990s, as the tea’s noble lineage and unique process of aging and fermentation were rediscovered, it achieved cult status both in China and internationally. The tea became a favorite among urban connoisseurs who analyzed it in language comparable to that used in wine appreciation and paid skyrocketing prices. In 2007, however, local events and the international economic crisis caused the Puer market to collapse. Puer Tea traces the rise, climax, and crash of this phenomenon. With ethnographic attention to the spaces in which Puer tea is harvested, processed, traded, and consumed, anthropologist Jinghong Zhang constructs a vivid account of the transformation of a cottage handicraft into a major industry—with predictable risks and unexpected consequences. HarperCollins Publishers Inc Savvy Chic: The Art of More for Less
Luxury living can still be achieved on a budget. "Savvy Chic" will teach you how to entertain, decorate, travel, and dress for less. In elegant prose, Anna Johnson combines a unique mix of anecdote, riff, and how-to, and shares her secrets of survivalist chic. She mixes the passionate with the practical to come up dozens of ideas for enhancing your lifestyle without killing your bank account: Decorating - create exquisite curtains with Chinese lace tablecloths bought for pennies in Chinatown; Style - master the art of wearing thrift-store vintage by figuring out your best decade: forties for pear shapes versus thirties or sixties for narrow hips; Travel - everything from faking resort chic in Capri to making a one star hotel room feel like home; Leisure - on a hot summer day create a luxurious in-home bathroom spa by dressing in a light kimono and cotton slippers, and soaking in a cool tub with a plate of sliced mango; and, Entertaining - abundant food is more impressive than expensive food - a mountain of clams steamed in a simple tomato broth with warm baguette costs little and immediately sets a decadent mood. Anna's philosophy runs throughout "Savvy Chic": good taste on the cheap is the backbone of libertine thrift, but more important still is the sense of abundance, generosity, and fun that come from re-inventing the rules. Adorned with gorgeous four-color illustrations, "Savvy Chic" is perfect for any woman looking to save money without skimping on style.

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Freak to Chic: "Gay" Men in and out of Fashion after Oscar Wilde
In this unique intervention in the study of queer culture, Dominic Janes highlights that, under the gaze of social conservatism, ‘gay’ life was hiding in plain sight. Indeed, he argues that the worlds of glamour, fashion, art and countercultural style provided rich opportunities for the construction of queer spectacle in London. Inspired by the legacies of Oscar Wilde, interwar and later 20th-century men such as Cecil Beaton expressed transgressive desires in forms inspired by those labelled ‘freaks’ and, thereby, made major contributions to the histories of art, design, fashion, sexuality, and celebrity. Janes reinterprets the origins of gay and queer cultures by charting the interactions between marginalized freaks and chic fashionistas. He establishes a new framework for future analyses of other cities and media, and of the roles of women and diverse identities.

When she arrived at Madame Chic's Parisian apartment as a foreign exchange student, Jennifer Scott was a casual California girl who thought sweatpants were appropriate street attire. Madame Chic took Jennifer under her wing and tutored her in the secrets of how the French elevate the little things in life to the art of living. Years later, Jennifer was back in California with a husband, two young daughters, a dog, and her first home. Jennifer wanted that life. She decided to see what would happen if she didn't perform her chores impatiently or mindlessly, if, instead, she could live like Madame Chic. At Home with Madame Chicreveals the secrets to having a happy, fulfilling, and passionate life at home. Five Continents Editions Asian Chic: The Influence of Japanese and Chinese Textiles on the Fashions of the Roaring Twenties
European fashion meets Asian traditional clothing. A lavishly illustrated catalogue on Asian textiles from the 1920s. Published to accompany an exhibition at the Baur Foundation in Geneva (details to be confirmed). European fashion was profoundly influenced in the early decades of the 20th century by the style, textiles, patterns and colour combinations of Asian clothing. The discovery of the kimono, in particular, with its loose cut, fluid lines and broad range of decorations, captivated the great couturiers of the period. It enabled adventurous women in the Roaring Twenties to cast out their corsets and social straightjackets, while offering a new, daring kind of elegance with exotic overtones. From the meeting of these two sartorial cultures has sprung an exhibition and this catalogue, in which the drawings of Paris fashion designers are compared with examples of contemporary East-Asian textiles from the Baur Foundation in Geneva. The wonderful garments discussed include the collections of kimonos and other Japanese clothes gifted by Sato Mariko (2008) and Sugawara Keiko (2015), as well as Chinese textiles that are the pride of the Foundation.

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Danger in the Path of Chic: Violence in Fashion between the Wars
During the interwar years, a proliferation of violence encroached upon the glossy, idealistic world of fashion: from the curiously common appearance of dismembered heads in fashion illustration, to seemingly torturous techniques and devices advertised by beauty imagery, even extending to garments designed to look assaulted and destroyed. Danger in the Path of Chic brings this disturbing imagery to light for the first time, proposing new directions for historians of fashion, violence and culture in the interwar years. Concentrating on London, Paris and New York as fashion centres and political allies, the volume explores why horror manifested itself in this way, at this time, and in a sphere that is usually perceived as being built on fantasy and escape. In doing so, Danger in the Path of Chic situates fashion within the very real social, psychological, economic and political traumas of the period.

Pitch Publishing Ltd Where the Cool Kids Hung out: The Chic Years of the UEFA Cup
Where the Cool Kids Hung Out is the story of the UEFA Cup's glory years, when it was a tournament that boasted a stronger field of teams than its senior siblings, the European Cup and the European Cup Winners' Cup. Since then it has drifted into its poor current form as the Europa League, the Champions League having siphoned off most of Europe's biggest clubs. Yet the UEFA Cup enjoyed some very stylish years, no more so than during the two-legged final period. It was an era when Ipswich Town swept to glory, Liverpool conditioned themselves to conquer the continent, Tottenham Hotspur twice captured the cup and Dundee United came agonisingly close. It was also a time when Borussia Monchengladbach made their name, Real Madrid regenerated as a force and Serie A came to dominate.
