Quart Publishers The Consciousness of Place
In his office Urbana, Bangladesh, Kashef Chowdhury designs architecture that is rooted in the history and nature of the location. Nature in this sense not only consists of vegetation, plants and forests, but also the spiritual and cultural context of a specific environment and landscape. The range of his works includes the transformation of ships, the development of housing and the construction of mosques, museums and corporate headquarters. All of his projects have the common feature that they are based on comprehensive research work, aimed at applying an awareness of a specific location and its nature to achieve a high degree of innovation and original expression. This combination of traditional building styles and contemporary architecture often has an inspirational effect. The Consciousness Of Place is Chowdhury’s philosophical engagement with his own understanding of architecture, based on his research and lectures. It focuses on the significance of architecture, which is able to connect us to nature and liberate us from hectic urban life. Buildings and workplaces should be transformed into oases of peace and relaxation in order to benefit from nature’s regenerative and relaxing qualities. Chowdhury stresses the need to listen to nature and appreciate its beauty. Accordingly, he prefers natural materials in his projects, while also using the interplay of light and shadow as a key element to create spaces that inspire us to pause and think. This publication is a manifesto of a form of architecture that harmonises with the respective location, reflecting the identity of its culture and people. Chowdhury regards his task not so much as work and more as an activity stemming from his love of an art form that serves the people – which he believes is the nature of architecture. In recent years, Chowdhury’s constructed works have attracted international attention and have been awarded prizes such as the 2022 RIBA International Prize and the 2016 Aga Khan Award for Architecture.

Quart Publishers Analogue Oldnew Architecture
The terms 'analogue architecture' and 'oldnew architecture' are key aspects of the teaching of Miroslav Sik at the ETH Zurich. During his first period there (1983-1991), Sik worked as Senior Assistant at the Chair of Fabio Reinhart and was in effect the spokesman of an architectural movement that became renowned far beyond the borders of Switzerland and is still influential today. In 1986/1991, the compact movement presented itself to the public with a touring exhibition and an accompanying large-scale 'Swiss Box', including chalk perspective drawings of its projects. Miroslav Sik worked as a Full Professor at the ETH Zurich between 1999 and 2018 during his second period there. Since the 1990s, Sik's theory and teaching have formed an important pillar of Swiss and international architectural history. This extensive volume contains the best 90/120 works respectively by students from both periods of Miroslav Sik's teaching, including plans, project descriptions and perspective diagrams. Some of the presented students went on to become renowned contemporary Swiss architects. This volume also includes the most important manifesto-like texts by Miroslav Sik and enlightening essays on the movement of analogue and oldnew architecture.

Quart Publishers Peter Markli: Everything One Invents is True
Peter Markli has been one of the most striking protagonists of German-Swiss architecture since the founding of the movement in the early 1980s. However, his impressive buildings resist classification; they do not fit any particular scheme or style, as each structure is developed on an intensely intimate level. This results in wholly unique edifices, which provoke questions about humanity's use of architecture as a means of expressing timelessness, rigidity, and permanence. This volume presents 17 buildings erected by Markli over the past 15 years. Each is analysed thoroughly with texts, plans and images. The presented works are complemented by enlightening essays by Florian Beigel, Philip Christou, Franz Wanner and Ellis Woodman. An exciting interview with Peter Markli himself rounds off this impressive monographic collection, conducted by Elena Kossovskaja.

Quart Publishers Sollberger Bogli
For each building presented in the volume, Biel architects Ivo Sollberger and Lukas Bögli describe a central idea that aptly symbolises the project, referring to the buildings themselves, which carry a narrative force within them. The rows of seats at the new Stade de la Tuilière in Lausanne, for example, are housed in a mighty gestural shell. And the structure of the Raiffeisenbank in Sonceboz-Sombeval appears as an impressive, dynamically-structured crystalline sculpture. Text in English and German.

Quart Publishers Feine Fassaden: Tektonik Schweizer Stadthäuser
Form and resistance are the essence of all architectural work. This is especially clear in the interaction between the effect and construction method of façades. They orchestrate the transition between interior and exterior worlds, they manifest the underlying approach and the way buildings behave towards their surroundings. In their articulation of engineering and aesthetics, supporting and loads, proportion and practicality, and rhythm and materiality, they reflect both varying production methods and social value systems. The architect Lando Rossmaier worked with students at the University of Lucerne to study the range of architectural means of construction and expression with respect to Swiss townhouse façades. This anthology presents a selection of around 80 buildings with sensitively developed tectonics, dating from the 20th-century to the present day, all of which have formed a backdrop for an urban way of life for decades. Like a manual, the effect is demonstrated using a photographic portrait and a description of the construction method, using detailed tectonic isometrics. The collection is supplemented by ten projects by contemporary Swiss architects, with essays on their understanding of tectonics. Text in German. Articles: Dr. Bettina Köhler, Roger Boltshauser, Buol & Zünd Architekten, Edelaar Mosayebi Inderbitzin Architekt*innen, Enzmann Fischer Partner Architekten, Joos & Mathys Architekten, Käferstein & Meister Architekten, Knapkiewicz & Fickert Architekten, Loeliger Strub Architektur, Lütjens Padmanabhan Architekt*innen, Bosshard Vaquer Architekten, Caruso St John Architects

The twin sisters Selma Mikou and Salwa Mikou founded their own Paris office in 2006 – after working for many years for Jean Nouvel and Renzo Piano. The architects have produced numerous prominent buildings in this way, including the Balsanéo Aquatics Center in Châteauroux (2021), which was developed as a dynamic figure that spans the boulevard like a bridge to overlook the unique landscape of the Indre region. Quart Publishers Menzingen Cantonal School KSM: Refurbishing Architectural Heritage. Bünzli & Courvoisier Architekten
The former Bernarda teacher-training centre in Menzingen was built between 1955 and 1958 by the two renowned Zug architectural teams of Hanns A. Brütsch and Alois Stadler, and Leo Hafner and Alfons Wiederkehr. The school on a gentle slope in the midst of the attractive landscape between Lake Zug and Lake Zurich is an exceptional example of 1950s Swiss architecture. The facility impresses with its staging of the exposed location, the coherent arrangement of five highly individualised buildings around a circular centre, and the notable design of the open spaces by Ernst Cramer. Between 2015 and 2018, the facility was extended and refurbished by the architects Bünzli & Courvoisier, transforming it for its new use as a cantonal school. The architects were strongly guided by the urban-planning and architectural design principles of the existing structures, while framing and expanding them with great respect and an undogmatic approach to consciously blur the boundaries between old and new. The book documents the existing facility with original plans and the clear-contoured, black & white pictures by the renowned Lucerne photographer Peter Ammon. Furthermore, the volume extensively reflects upon and documents in detail the school’s exciting, exemplary renovation. Text in English and German.

Quart Publishers Graber & Steiger: Mongraphie
For around two decades, the architectural duo of Niklaus Graber & Christoph Steiger from Lucerne have been continuously working on the design and construction of high quality buildings that can without doubt be regarded as an enrichment to Swiss building culture. Although the architects attempt to make their works generally understandable and give them a timeless legibility, when designing them they take the risk of fundamentally questioning the relevant task. That often leads to surprising interpretations and tailored solutions that reveal the specific characteristics of each project. By now, their work includes private family homes and apartment buildings, as well as a considerable number of public buildings for educational, cultural, industrial and tourist purposes, which have attracted a great deal of attention on the specialist scene both in Switzerland and abroad. For instance the extension to a window factory in Hagendorn, the therapy centre for the Heilpadagogische Zentrum Uri and the panorama gallery on the peak of Mt. Pilatus have been awarded national and international architecture prizes. Text in German, with English translation booklet enclosed.
