Lima has many more sunny days than its inhabitants claim. The urban layout of its historic centre – the famous checkerboard – is the most perfect Cartesian grid in South America, yet the suburbs are the global capital of informality. Lima society lives in a permanent state of commercial frenzy, yet it has preserved the oldest traditions in the continent. The best-known works of architecture are viceregal and republican, yet pre-Columbian ruins are scattered around the city in a manner that can only be found elsewhere in Cairo. Its modern movement is more cheerful than that of the old continent, midway between Brazil and California. And the invasions, a heterodox and radical phenomenon, have generated an astonishing form of urban development. The book describes more than 160 works, organised in routes that range from the territorial to the neighbourhood scale and are designed to explore the city by boat, car, train, bus, bicycle or on foot. It covers the predominant styles of architecture in each period as well as the remains of the pre-existing landscape and the infrastructures that articulate the city today. Interspersed in the texts are references to the civilising mechanisms that have underpinned the construction of the works, the economic activities that have made them possible, and their public administration. The participation of foreign intellectuals in the urban development of Peruvian cities, and particularly of Europeans in the introduction of new types of buildings in Lima, remains one of the most important influences on local architects and engineers. Based on the award-winning doctoral thesis of Javier Atoche Intili, a specialist in architectural heritage with roots in both South America and Europe, this monograph focuses on the study of the most active European designers in 1940s Peru, including the Austrian Richard Neutra, the German-born Paul Lester Wiener and the Spaniard Josep Lluis Sert. It also considers the economic, political and cultural circumstances that underpinned the design and use of multi-storey buildings in the historic centre of Lima: from the introduction of urban planning regulations to the presence of European-born architects who designed a significant number of these buildings, including Paul Linder from Germany, Mario Bianco from Italy and Theodor Cron from Switzerland. Over 3,000 churches were built in Poland between 1945 and 1989, despite the socialist state’s hostility towards religion. We call this Day-VII Architecture. Built by parishioners from scavenged or pinched materials, the churches were at once an expression of faith and a form of anti-government protest. Their fantastic designs broke with the state’s rigid urbanism. Neither legal nor prohibited, the construction of churches during this period engaged the most talented architects and craftspeople, who in turn enabled parish communities to build their own houses of worship. These community projects eventually became crucial sites for the democratization of Poland. Unearthing the history of these churches through photography and interviews with their designers, this publication sheds new light on the architectural dimension of Poland’s trans­formation from state socialism to capitalism.

This year’s annual presents a number of interviews with distinguished authors who discuss 22 buildings in Germany shortlisted by a jury for the DAM Preis for Architecture in Germany 2018. In order to make this selection, curators of the museum as well as prominent architects and architecture critics visited around 100 buildings that were nominated for this year’s award. The 2018 edition of the annual presents the shortlisted works in greater detail in addition to giving special recognition to the winner of the DAM Preis. The Elbphilharmonie, being an exceptional project, was not eligible for the award but receives a special mention. A separate chapter is dedicated to buildings designed by German architects abroad, two of which are presented in this issue. The book also features two essays. One explores the model used in Hamburg for allocating land, designed to support joint building ventures. The other explores the current boom in architecture for theatre and music venues.

Monterrey means mountain king, a name befitting its location surrounded by the Sierra Madre in north-eastern Mexico. The Melnikov House, a building designed by the architect Konstantin Melnikov in Moscow for his family (1927 – 1929), is an icon of the architectural avant-garde. The house was originally built as an experimental cylindrical house to test out Konstantin Melnikov’s very own concept of mass construction of residential estate. From ancient stadium construction to a design object of the twenty-first century, sports arenas have long been turned into places hosting a global media spectacle. For a few hours or days, colossuses made of steel and concrete transform into colourful festival locations. Since the first ancient stadium in Greek Olympia, the typology of stadium construction has undergone a profound transformation: due to changes in requirements and demand, an urban entertainment centre has emerged from the simple running track in the countryside. Through selected examples of projects, this volume from the Construction and Design Manual series illustrates the development of stadiums in relation to building typologies. It provides a basic manual of stadium design using basic planning parameters. Examined are, amongst others, Olympic stadiums, football stadiums, velodromes and ice arenas. The first guide on architecture of Tirana - the capital of Albania is a collection of 100 buildings that represent the construction of the city in the modern period, soon after the declaration of independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1912. Berlin was shaped by the events of the twentieth century in a process of “automatic urbanism.” More than any other metropolis, the city absorbed the forces of that epoch — modernity, fascism, two world wars, Stalinism, socialism, the Cold War, revolt, capitalism — and gave them form. This book shows how even today, opposed ideological, political, economic, and military forces continue to produce unplanned structures and activities and urban phenomena beyond the categories of urban design and architecture that conceal rich potential. The new urban municipality of Berlin', also called Greater Berlin, was created 100 years ago, on 1 October 1920, following a ground-breaking administrative reform. This was a century-defining milestone that transformed Berlin into a world city. The old city of Berlin was merged with 7 other cities, 59 rural communities, and 27 estate districts. Professor Pekka Pitkänen (1927 – 2018) was one of the most significant Finnish architects of the post-war period. He is known as a master of concrete buildings and as a staunch supporter of modernist approach to architecture. He won numerous commissions by architectural competitions. The Chapel of the Holy Cross (1963 – 1967) in Turku is usually considered as Pitkänen’s main work. From 1950’s to 1980’s Pitkänen built in Turku numerous residential and commercial buildings, often in co-operation with the building company Urakoitsijat Oy. Together with Ola Laiho and Ilpo Raunio, Pitkänen planned the extension of the Finnish Parliament (1972 – 1978). Late in his career Pitkänen focused on public buildings, the finish of the career was the Turku court building, completed in 1997. The book presents Pitkänen’s architecture through his whole career, based on research of his archive, the presentations of the works in contemporary magazines as well as the memoir of Pitkänen.

This is a book about four cities which were several times, and especially in connection with World War II, forcedly, put into completely new national contexts. This was affected by coercion from outside. The changes included genocide and forced displacement, but preserved built environment testifies past populations and national contexts. This book describes the urban environment in the four cities before World War II, and how the present population handles the memories of the past for future development. In connection with World War II and its aftermaths, many of the four cities residents of Chişinău, Černivci, Lviv and Wrocław were either killed or subject to forced migration beyond the new national borders. People settled in the city environment which still bore the traces of the earlier population and the earlier urban life that had been brutally put to an end. Due to the continued Russian military aggression on the territory of Ukraine, this study takes on a new relevance. · This title is part of the Histories of Ukrainian Architecture programme initiated by DOM publishers in response to Russia's attack on Ukraine's sovereignty on 24 February 2022.
