Robert Polidori is known for his large format photographs of habitats and rooms saturated with the traces of human intervention. For three months Biel, Switzerland, hosted a special kind of sculpture. It was special not simply because it was by one of Switzerland’s most famous contemporary artists—Thomas Hirschhorn—and dedicated to one of the most prominent authors in the history of Swiss literature, Robert Walser. Beyond that, this sculpture was a redefinition of sculpture itself, because what takes on a plastic form here is not made of stone, steel, or bronze. It is society itself that helped to develop this work of art. In 2016 Thomas Hirschhorn and the curator Kathleen Bühler began doing field research in Biel, the city of Robert Walser’s birth, connecting with residents, clubs, artists, literati, and experts. This resulted in a multifaceted agenda. Every day the two offered events such as readings, walking tours, lectures, and children’s activities. All of this ultimately comprised the Robert Walser-Sculpture. Never before has an entire city been integrated into a temporary work of art in this way.

The poetry and drawings of Robert Seydel’s imagined persona S., another persona invented by artist and writer Robert Seydel, was a recluse who kept a great library which he suddenly abandoned along with a manuscript of poems and a slim stack of drawings. These poems--hypnotic, distilled, obsessive and playful--are written by Seydel as S., whom he devises as a naïf, suffering bouts of madness and apophenia. Seydel described S. in his notebooks as "a small ghost who lived alone in an apartment in a house in Amherst, on a gray street and around the corner from Emily Dickinson's manse on Main Street. He wrote prolifically--these small songs & in a journal & drew as well, small strange drawings of heads like hillocks that stare out from the small valleys of the Holyoke." Browning has been identified as the greatest nineteenth century poet of human psychology, but the category most popular in his own time defined him as a poet of 'the grotesque'. In this book, John Woolford undertakes to specify the precise meaning and scope of this term, in the process placing him in a major aesthetic tradition running from the Romantic Sublime through to modern concepts and theorisations of the grotesque, such as the Bakhtinian. This study subsumes the other major critical discourse fertilised by his work, the 'dramatic monologue', but adds to that other notable features of it, such as its lucid language, and what has impeded his full appreciation hitherto, its difficulty. The study seeks, not to excuse but to explain and celebrate the intellectual white heat at which he worked, and to position all aspects of his output within a unified theory of its significance. Browning was arguably the cleverest of the English poets, but he was more than that: contemporary comparisons of him with Chaucer and Shakespeare are not misplaced.

In August 1992 Robert Frank’s good friend and antique dealer Reginald Rankin invited Frank on a trip to Pangnirtung, a village of around 1,300 Inuit inhabitants in the Arctic Circle. This book is Frank’s documentation of the five-day sojourn. Curiously Frank depicts Pangnirtung void of its people: the still harbour, public housing, a convenience store, a telephone post. Sincere without being sentimental, the photos are shaped by a short text from Frank himself, “Prefabricated homes along the main road in Pangnirtung. At times a decorated window – reflections inside or outside. Stones – maybe the balance of a big sky above…” Robert Frank was born in Zurich, Switzerland in 1924 and immigrated to the United States in 1947. He is best known for his seminal book The Americans, first published in 1958, which gave rise to a distinct new form in the photo-book, and his experimental film Pull My Daisy, made in 1959. Frank’s other important projects include the books Black White and Things, 1952, and The Lines of My Hand, 1972, and the film Cocksucker Blues for the Rolling Stones, 1972. He divides his time between New York City and Nova Scotia, Canada.
