Die Frankfurter Altstadt zwischen Dom und Römer weist wie kein anderes Areal der Stadt eine spannungsreiche und politisch hoch aufgeladene Baugeschichte auf: Angefangen mit dem Einzug der Moderne, als die neuen Verkehrsmittel Straßendurchbrüche durch die kleinteilige Bebauung der Altstadt erforderten, dem Siedlungsbau zur Zeit des Neuen Frankfurt bis zur nahezu vollständigen Zerstörung im Zweiten Weltkrieg. Die modernen Wiederaufbauplanungen in den 1950er und 1960er Jahren waren geprägt von Auseinandersetzungen darüber, ob die Architektur rekonstruiert oder modern wiederaufgebaut werden solle. In den 1970er Jahren baute Frankfurt auf dem Römerberg das Technische Rathaus und das Historische Museum im Stil des Brutalismus, in den 1980er Jahren folgten postmoderne Bauten und Rekonstruktionen. Seit 2013 werden nach dem Abriss des Technischen Rathauses weitere große Teile der historischen Altstadt neu errichtet. Dieses Buch erzählt die städtebaulichen Entwicklungen der Frankfurter Altstadt anhand exemplarischer Bauten und Bauprojekte. Dabei ermöglichen Blicke auf vergleichbare städtebauliche Entwicklungen in Deutschland und Europa eine Einordnung der spezifischen Frankfurter Situation. The Trappist abbey of Our Lady of Gethsemani in Kentucky (the house of Thomas Merton) owns the eclectic Dom Edmond Obrecht Collection of manuscripts, which contains not only medieval manuscripts but materials of interest for the study of the French Revolution. Most items are of Cistercian origin, but other monastic traditions are represented as well. Produced between 1140-1960, the collection was brought to the USA during the first part of the twentieth century. This catalogue is the first and only full codicological description of these manuscripts.

Dom Felice Vaggioli wrote this autobiography between 1909 and 1911, after the publication in Italy of his History of New Zealand and its Inhabitants. One of the first Benedictine monks to be sent to New Zealand, he arrived in 1879 and returned home in 1887, having worked in Gisbourne, Auckland and the Coromandel. A Deserter's Adventures is Vaggioli's title, as he was a concientious objector, or "draft-dodger," as a young monk and so termed himself "a deserter." This is typical of the individual who emerges from these pages: always questioning, and always applying a strong sense of justice and fine logic to the many dilemmas he found himself in as a missionary priest in New Zealand.
