Over 500 species of animals are considered: shellfish, insects, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals—including human beings.In Books I–IV, Aristotle gives a comparative survey of internal and external body parts, including tissues and fluids, and of sense faculties and voice. Books V–VI study reproductive methods, breeding habits, and embryogenesis as well as some secondary sex differences. In Books VII–IX, Aristotle examines differences among animals in feeding; in habitat, hibernation, migration; in enmities and sociability; in disposition (including differences related to gender) and intelligence. Here too he describes the human reproductive system, conception, pregnancy, and obstetrics. This challenging book addresses environmental and resource management problems that continue to emerge despite increasing attempts at regulation. It proposes a proactive approach to environmental and resource management through the design of institutions and organizations. In addition, it suggests that social rules for environmental management can be improved by taking into account the social costs of externalities and the administrative and transaction costs to reduce them.The chapters in this book draw design ideas from four sources: theory, field studies, simulation and experiment. In the first section, contributors discuss concepts for institutional design including incentives, information, fairness, sustainability, transaction costs, and coordination. Models for policy design in the second section apply welfare economics and game theory to international pollution regulation, cost sharing for pollution reduction, enforcement systems, policy instruments and liability rules. In the final section, experimental methods for institutional design are applied to marketable pollution permits, groundwater laws and markets with uncertainty. From her appearance in a small magazine in 1906 to her death in 1965, Anna Akhmatova was a dominant presence in Russian literary life. But this friend of Pasternak and Mandelstam was a poet in a country where poetry was literally a matter of life and death, as she found when Mandelstam and her own husband, Gumilyev, were executed, and her son imprisoned for many years in the Gulag. Akhmatova's first collection, Evening, appeared in 1912. Rosary (1914) made her a household name. After the Revolution she went in and out of favour with the authorities, who sometimes allowed her to publish, sometimes banned her work. She is now most celebrated in the West for Poem Without A Hero and Requiem, a sequencemourning the victims of Stalin's Terror which was only published (and then outside Russia) in 1963.

The increasing demand for graduates trained to deal with complex environmental issues gives rise to the problem of how environmental modelling should be taught. Computerised Environmental Modelling, which is based upon an existing undergraduate course, addresses this problem by presenting a readable (and tested) introduction to the subject through an easy to use software environment. Simple numerical models taught through widely available spreadsheets do away with the need for language-specific training. Students now no longer need to program before they can model. Divided into three sections, the book first deals with the general principles of environmental systems modelling, then with a series of examples that familiarise the reader with the use of spreadsheets (in particular with Excel). Finally a set of new and topical environmental models are presented, including ocean, meteorological, hydrological, and extinction models. Both the disk and the text will greatly benefit all undergraduates who would like to acquire a comprehensive understanding of environmental modelling techniques.

Ultrafast photonics has become an interdisciplinary topic of high international research interest because of the spectacular development of compact and efficient lasers producing optical pulses with durations in the femtosecond time domain. Present day long-haul telecommunications systems are almost entirely based on the transmission of short bursts or pulses of laser light along silicon optical fibres, with Erbium-doped fibre amplifiers inserted to regenerate the signals periodically. The phenomenal success of optical fibre communications has created a substantial opto-electronics industry that provides efficient laser sources, high-speed modulators, optical amplifiers and detectors.Although optical data transmission is now well established, current systems approaches will eventually cease to meet the ever-increasing demands of data-communication. Existing wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) schemes will need to be complemented with time-domain multiplexing (TDM) techniques involving digital optical signals using ultrashort laser pulses.This book brings together contributions from world experts at major collaborative research initiatives throughout Europe, the USA and Japan and considers all aspects of this very active area of research. Topics covered range from the fundamental physics of optical interactions and material properties through to new system concepts for ultrahigh-capacity data transfer and processing using femtosecond pulses.
