University of Maryland Baltimore County, Fine Arts Gallery Andrea Robbins & Max Becher: Portraits
This volume is the first to examine the portrait photographs of this esteemed husband-and-wife team. The artists' portraits--like their radical landscapes and city-scenes--are powerfully evocative, boldly subverting our expectations of the discipline of portraiture: Rather than capturing the visual essence of a sitter, they reveal identity to be multifarious, transitive and culturally and historically bound. They capture their subjects in ways that transform, enhance and accentuate social and cultural meaning, doing so with the full complicity and respect of the people they photograph. Robbins and Becher spend weeks living with each community they document. They immerse themselves in the stories of its citizens and history, interviewing residents, participating in their customs, photographing them at work, play and home. Most important, they allow their subjects to represent themselves--not only as they would like to been seen, but in ways that illuminate their complex humanity.

Prestel Jonathas de Andrade: One to One
Themes of memory, love, economic inequality, and political upheaval are threaded throughout de Andrade’s work, which is often situated in Recife, his hometown in the northeast corner of Brazil. This includes the artist’s most recent works, The Fish, a 16mm film about fishermen who embrace their prey at the moment of their death, and para 2 em 1, in which de Andrade uses an instruction manual as a metaphor for homosexual love. By localizing his art, de Andrade makes powerful statements about many of the issues facing Brazil’s working class, including environmental degradation, urban blight, political inequity, and the loss of traditions and cultures. His multifaceted approach, in which he often collaborates with his fellow citizens, makes his work accessible, personal, and steeped in humanity.

University Press of Florida André Michaux in Florida: An Eighteenth-Century Botanical Journey
The name Michaux often appears in the plant names of Florida, from the endangered yellow violets that grow wild in the panhandle to the Florida rosemary of the scrub. Andre Michaux (1746-1803) was an extraordinary and dynamic individual who explored North America during the eighteenth century, the first trained botanist to explore extensively the wilderness east of the Mississippi River, including Spanish East Florida. This first book-length account of Michaux's Florida exploration combines his original journal with writings about him by later authors, historical background, and the author's own narrative to create a multifaceted, comprehensive treatise on Michaux's travels and discoveries in Florida.Beginning with a biographical sketch on the life of Andre Michaux, royal botanist for King Louis XVI of France, the authors retrace (using 16 maps) the exploratory routes he took in Florida and recount historical events occurring in Florida at the time. They include in full documentary form all the plants he discovered, collected, and observed and fully assess his findings so that his contributions can now be evaluated along with those of better-known botanists of whom much has been written, such as John Bartram and his son William—who acknowledged the Frenchman's abilities, writing that Michaux could traverse the same ground that he and his father had covered and find plants that they had missed. From a historical as well as a botanical perspective, Andre Michaux in Florida re-creates the Florida exploration of a remarkable explorer and observer and allows us to experience vicariously the vibrancy and joy of his journey of discovery.

Scheidegger und Spiess AG, Verlag Andre Thomkins: Lackskins
Andre Thomkins is renowned as an artist treating imagery, forms and materials as well as language in playful and experimental ways. His mastery of the classical visual art media was unparalleled, yet he also experimented with different techniques and materials. Within Thomkins's oeuvre, his works of the 1950s in particular are characterised by a pronounced love of experimentation. During this period, he developed his Lackskins by 'painting' with gloss paint on water. He had stumbled across this special technique by chance: cleaning his paint brushes in water, he noticed that the gloss paint he had used left a film on the surface that formed an image. He began deliberately manipulating that floating film of paint and eventually lifted the resulting image from the water with a sheet of paper, achieving 'something planetary, very light and fluctuating' (Andre Thomkins). This wonderful book, 'Andre Thomkins: Lackskins' is the first comprehensive presentation of these beautiful works. Text in English & German.

Roaring Brook Press Andre the Giant
Andre Roussimoff is known as both the lovable giant in The Princess Bride and a heroic pro-wrestling figure. He was a normal guy who'd been dealt an extraordinary hand in life. At his peak, he weighed 500 pounds and stood nearly seven and a half feet tall. But the huge stature that made his fame also signed his death warrant. Box Brown brings his great talents as a cartoonist and biographer to this phenomenal new graphic novel. Drawing from historical records about Andre's life as well as a wealth of anecdotes from his colleagues in the wrestling world, including Hulk Hogan, and his film co-stars (Billy Crystal, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, etc), Brown has created in Andre the Giant, the first substantive biography of one of the twentieth century's most recognizable figures.

The New Press Andrea Dworkin: The Feminist as Revolutionary
From one of America's leading biographers, the definitive story of the radical feminist and anti-pornography activist, based on exclusive access to her archives Fifteen years after her death, Andrea Dworkin remains one of the most important and challenging figures in second-wave feminism. Although frequently relegated to its more radical fringes, Dworkin was without doubt a formidable and influential writer, a philosopher, and an activist—a brilliant figure who inspired and infuriated in equal measure. Her many detractors were eager to reduce her to the caricature of the angry, man-hating feminist who believed that all sex was rape, and as a result, her work has long been misunderstood. It is in recent years, especially with the rise of the #MeToo movement, that there has been a resurgence of interest in her ideas. This biography is the perfect complement to the widely reviewed anthology of her writing, Last Days at Hot Slit, published in 2019, providing much-needed context to her work. Given exclusive access to never-before-published photographs and archives, including her letters to many of the major figures of second-wave feminism, award-winning biographer Martin Duberman traces Dworkin's life, from her abusive first marriage through her central role in the sex and pornography wars of the following decades. This is a vital, complex, and long overdue reassessment of the life and work of one of the towering figures of second-wave feminism.

Hemeria André Carrara, Regards

BAI NV Rouge Lointain: André Soupart
Rouge Lointain is first and foremost a book of photographs that is in line with the resolutely contemporary trend of preserving traces of places and activities that are in danger of disappearing. Through the images of its superb machinery that has now disappeared and its deserted architecture, it is the memory of an Italian-style theatre that lives on today. Through them it is also the work of those who worked there in the shadows and without whom the show could not have existed as we imagine. Fascinated by the beauty of its frames, the dilapidated materials, the magic of these mechanisms made of ropes, pulleys, capstans and narrow footbridges on three antique masts, André Soupart invites us to wander on the grill, under the stage and backstage and to discover a universe unknown to the spectators. Text in English and French.

Seagull Books London Ltd Andre Gorz: A Life
The first and exhaustive biography of twentieth-century leftist philosopher Andre Gorz. Recognized as one of the most lucid and innovative critics of contemporary capitalism, Andre Gorz (1923-2007) was known for asking fundamental questions regarding the meaning of life and work. This first biography of a unique figure operating at the confluence of literature, philosophy, and journalism revisits half a century of intellectual and political life. Born Gerhart Hirsch in Vienna, he studied in Switzerland before opting to live and work in France. A self-taught existentialist thinker, he was constantly revising his view of the world, unafraid to break new theoretical ground in doing so. Influenced by Marx, Husserl, Sartre, and Illich, he had very close affinities with the new thinking on the Left that was coming out of Italy in the 1960s and 70s. He was also one of the first thinkers to shape political ecology and to advocate de-growth. The intellectual on the editorial board of Sartre's journal Les Temps Modernes, Gorz was also a mainstream journalist. He wrote in L'Express under the sobriquet Michel Bosquet before joining others in the creation of Le Nouvel Observateur. Through Gorz's life journey, we meet not only Sartre and de Beauvoir, but also Herbert Marcuse, Fidel Castro, Daniel Cohn-Bendit, Ivan Illich, Felix Guattari, Antonio Negri, and many others. Beyond his poignant autobiographical narratives, The Traitor and Letter to D, which attest to his deep humanity, Gorz remains a precious guide for all who believe that another world is still possible.

Faber & Faber Justine: Introduced by André Aciman
Rediscover one of the twentieth century's greatest romances: this seductive tale of four tangled lovers in wartime Egypt, introduced by André Aciman (Call Me By Your Name and Find Me), is 'wonderful' (Elif Shafak)I remembered Justine saying harshly as she lay in bed: 'We use each other like axes to cut down the ones we really love'.Alexandria: the great winepress of love. Trams, palm trees, and watermelon stalls lie honey-bathed in sunlight; in darkened bedrooms, sweaty lovers unfurl. But in a world trembling on the brink of war, passion and death are inextricable. When a penniless schoolteacher begins an affair with Justine - a married Egyptian lady of unparalleled glamour - their partners are sucked into a whirlpool of jealousy and violence. One of the world's greatest romances, rich in political and sexual intrigue, Lawrence Durrell's scandalous 'investigation of modern love' set the world alight in 1957 and - as André Aciman reveals - it burns just as brightly today. What Readers Are Saying:'Sometimes you discover a new author and know you're going to be friends for life ... One of the most beautiful books I've ever read.''I absolutely adored this book ... I felt sucked into it with an amazing force by the beauty of the words ... The backdrop of 1930s Egypt's literary circles and bohemian relationships is mesmerising ... Breathtaking.''Shimmering and dreamlike ... One of the most beautifully written books I've read ... All of life is here; can't wait for the next one.''Lush, brutal, beautiful ... Durrell captured a place and time that will never exist again.''What makes this novel truly spectacular is the language, the episodic jumps in time, the lush lyricism, and how Durrell so deftly manages to tie this all into both the city of Alexandria and the themes of passion, love, and jealousy. 'What The Critics Said:'A masterpiece.' Guardian'One of the great works of English fiction.' Times 'Dazzlingly exuberant ... Reckless ... Superb.' Observer'Brave and brazen ... Lush and grandiose.' Independent 'Legendary ... Casts a spell ... Reader, watch out!' Guardian'Lushly beautiful ... One of the most important works of our time.' NYTBR

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Out of the Fog: The Sinking of Andrea Doria
A trace of the unsolved mystery seems to follow all ship sinkings through history. This interest is especially keen in the case of the collision between Stockholm and Andrea Doria, two passenger liners that collided at the edge of the fogbank in 1956, even though both were equipped with radar and officers on both ships were aware of the presence of the other. Stockholm was badly damaged but able to return to New York under its own power. Andrea Doria sank soon after the collision. The preliminary hearing held after the tragedy raised as many questions as it answered, as the two companies who owned the ships chose to settle out of court before all the testimony had been given. With no documented resolution, some of those questions remain to this day, but this book provides information and insights not previously available in English. Out of the Fog describes the events leading up to the collision from the perspective of both ships. The collision itself is covered, as is the heroic and largely successful rescue effort that followed. The book contains testimony given at the hearing, and an appendix provides a legal opinion from an attorney who was directly involved with the case. Algot Mattsson was the information officer for Swedish America Line, the owner of Stockholm, and had special access to Johan-Ernst Carstens-Johannsen, the sole officer on the bridge at the time of the collision. Gordon W. Paulsen was one of the lawyers representing Swedish America Line at the time of the collision.

Art Institute of Chicago Andre Kertesz: Postcards from Paris
The first comprehensive study of these rare, influential objects, documenting a formative moment in the noted photographer’s early career This elegant book unites all of the known carte postale prints by the photographer André Kertész (1894–1985), including portraits, views of Paris, careful studio scenes, and exquisitely simple still lifes. Essays shed new light on the artist’s most acclaimed images; themes of materiality, exile, and communication; his illustrious and bohemian social circle; and the changing identity of art photography. Playful yet refined, the book’s design reflects the spirit of 1920s Paris while underscoring the modernity of the catalogue’s more than 250 illustrated works. Kertész made his rigorously composed prints on inexpensive but lush postcard stock, sharing them with friends and sending them back to family in Hungary. The works reveal the artist learning his craft as he encountered an international group of modernists—including Piet Mondrian, Fernand Léger, and Joseph Csáky—in the interwar metropolis. Prized by collectors as well as by Kertész himself, the cartes postales influenced his compositions and the intimate scale of his picture making for decades.Distributed for the Art Institute of ChicagoExhibition Schedule:Art Institute of Chicago (October 2, 2021–January 17, 2022)High Museum of Art, Atlanta (February 18–May 29, 2022)

Editions Norma Andre Beloborodoff: Architecte, peintre, scenographe
From imperial Russia to the Rome of the 1960s, the work of architect, painter and scenographer André Beloborodoff (1886-1965) expresses his unique vision of the history of modernity. An enlightened Palladian, Beloborodoff designed palaces, châteaux and villas for Café Society patrons using modern construction techniques, such as reinforced concrete. The interior design of the Yusupov palace in Saint Petersburg, the Caulaincourt château in Picardy, and the Villa Pepoli for Maurice Sandoz in Rome - built at the same time as Le Corbusier's Cité radieuse - are witnesses to his timeless, stripped-down and refined classicism. He won the Prix de Rome in 1934, and subsequently spent many years living and working in Italy. Many of his architectural ideals are found in his metaphysical and surrealist paintings and watercolors, highly praised by Paul Valéry, Mario Praz, Henri de Régnier, and Jean-Louis Vaudoyer. His atmospheric vistas of sunken or vanished worlds recall the edifices that Beloborodoff, eternally rootless, was never able to build. Text in French.
