An interdisciplinary study of one of the most important monuments in Islamic artThe Nasrid builders of the Alhambra the best-preserved medieval Muslim palatial city were so exacting that some of their work could not be fully explained until the invention of fractal geometry. This book is the story of an extraordinary survivor from the Alhambra palace in Granada, Spain: the Alhambra cupola, now in the Museum of Islamic Art in Berlin. The cupola, a ceiling crafted from carved and painted wood, was made to crown an exquisite mirador in one of the earliest palace buildings of the Alhambra. The book is the cupola’s biography from its medieval construction to its imminent redisplay in Berlin. It traces the long history of the Alhambra through the prism of the cupola, from the Muslim craftsmen who built it, to its adaptation by the Christian conquerors after the fall of Granada in 1492, to its creation as a heritage site. The cupola was sketched by artists from across Europe, before it was dismantled by a German financier and taken to Berlin in the 19th century. It witnessed the dramatic events of the 20th century in Germany and was eventually bought by the Museum in 1978. In recent decades, the new visibility of the cupola to the wider public has prompted questions about the object and its movement from Granada to Berlin. Its removal from the Alhambra and the complex reasons behind this loss are central to this biography. Setting the cupola within the wider context of Islamic heritage, it considers the role of collecting practices in the transformation of living monuments into heritage sites in the 20th century. This book presents a focused study of this unique object that cuts across academic disciplines and geographic boundaries to reveal a new perspective on the legacy of Islamic art in Europe and its continuing relevance today.

The Alhambra is one of the most famous archaeological sites worldwide, yet knowledge of it remains very partial, focussing on the medieval palaces. This book addresses that imbalance, examining the adjacent urban and industrial zone. The Alhambra is one of the most famous archaeological sites worldwide, yet knowledge of the complex remains very partial, focussing on its medieval Nasrid palaces. Other aspects of the site are virtually unknown, not only to the general public but to archaeologists and historians as well. The Royal Workshops of the Almambra addresses this imbalance, examining the urban and industrial zone adjacent to the palaces. Once the most densely populated and extensive area of the complex, this zone, the Secano, contained houses, tanneries, and workshops including a considerable number of pyrotechnological facilities for the production of metal, glass and ceramic items. Presenting the results of the Royal Workshops of the Alhambra (UNESCO World Heritage Site) project, the book gives a much-needed insight into the industrial sector of the Alhambra. Crucially, the project focusses on the early modern era, when the manufacture of ceramic, glass and metal actually reached their peak. The opening chapters set the archaeological work and the Secano in context and discuss the methodology for archaeological investigation of pyrotechnological activity; while further chapters present the results of the research. Drawing on both traditional and ground-breaking survey and excavation techniques, the book provides an invaluable wide-lens picture of the palatial city.

Dieses spielte eine zentrale Rolle im Werk Carl von Diebitschs (1819–1869), der als einer der ersten deutschen Architekten die nasridischen Bauten Granadas, die spektakulären Paläste der Alhambra, den Alcázar von Sevilla und die Moschee-Kathedrale von Córdoba in den Jahren 1846-1847 vor Ort studierte und ihren ornamentalen Reichtum in zahlreichen Bleistiftskizzen und Aquarellen festhielt. Vom 27. Oktober 2017 bis zum 10. Januar 2018 werden Carl von Diebitschs Architekturstudien und Bauentwürfe im Rahmen der im Architekturmuseum der Technischen Universität Berlin stattfindenden Ausstellung «A Fashionable Style. Carl von Diebitsch und das Maurische Revival» erstmals in Deutschland gezeigt. Die vorliegende Publikation wurde begleitend zur Ausstellung konzipiert und bietet einen vertiefenden Blick auf die gezeigten Exponate und thematischen Schwerpunkte. Der Fokus liegt dabei auf Carl von Diebitschs Jahren an der Berliner Bauakademie, seinen Studien zur islamischen Architektur von al-Andalus und seinen neo-maurischen Bauten und Interieurs in Deutschland und Kairo. Weitere Aspekte sind der Löwenhof als Nukleus des Alhambra-Stils und seine Transformation im 19. Jahrhundert, Owen Jones’ international gefeierter Alhambra Court von 1854, die serielle Reproduktion nasridischer Architektur und Ornamentik in Form von Gipsabgüssen, Architekturmodellen und Möbelstücken oder die Bedeutung von Stuck und Eisen im Werk des preußischen Architekten.
