Our current intellectual system provides us with a far more complete and accurate understanding of nature and ourselves than was available in any previous society. This gain in understanding has arisen from two sources: the use of the 'scientific method', and the breaking up of our intellectual enterprise into increasingly narrower disciplines and research programs. However, we have failed to keep these narrow specialities connected to the intellectual enterprise as a whole. The author demonstrates that this causes a number of difficulties. We have no viewpoint from which we can understand the relationships between the disciplines and lack a forum for adjudicating situations where different disciplines give conflicting answers to the same problem. We seriously underestimate the differences in methodology and in the nature of principles in the various branches of science. This provocative and wide-ranging book provides a detailed analysis and possible solutions for dealing with this problem.

Das Parteizentrum der NSDAP am Königsplatz in München war das erste repräsentative Bauprojekt der Nationalsozialisten in Deutschland. Nach Plänen von Paul Ludwig Troost entstand bis 1937 ein monumentales Forum der Bürokratie und des Kults. Der klassizistische Platz wurde zum Kultort für die in zwei 'Ehrentempeln' beigesetzten 'Märtyrer der Bewegung' und zur Kulisse für die Massenaufmärsche der NSDAP. Während im 'Verwaltungsbau' unter der Leitung des Reichsschatzmeisters das Parteivermögen kontrolliert und die Kartei der über sieben Millionen Parteimitglieder geführt wurde, diente der 'Führerbau' Adolf Hitler und seinem Stellvertreter als repräsentativer Amtssitz. 1945 richtete die amerikanische Militärregierung in den ehemaligen Parteibauten den Central Art Collecting Point ein. Von hier aus wurden Werke der nationalsozialistischen Beutekunst an die rechtmäßigen Eigentümer in ganz Europa restituiert. Seit 1947 hat das Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte seinen Sitz im ehemaligen 'Verwaltungsbau der NSDAP'. Zahlreiche Abbildungen führen die Gebäude am Königsplatz vor Augen, in deren unmittelbarer Nähe in Kürze das NS-Dokumentationszentrum für München errichtet werden soll. Die Publikation fasst die Geschichte des Parteizentrums und die Nutzungen der Gebäude seit dem Anfang der 1930er Jahre bis heute zusammen.

Authoritarian Laughter explores the political history of the satire and humor magazine Broom published in Soviet Lithuania. Artists, writers, and journalists were required to create state-sponsored Soviet humor and serve the Communist Party after Lithuania was incorporated into the Soviet Union in 1940. Neringa Klumbytė investigates official attempts to shape citizens into Soviet subjects and engage them through a culture of popular humor. Broom was multidirectional—it both facilitated Communist Party agendas and expressed opposition toward the Soviet regime. Official satire and humor in Soviet Lithuania increasingly created dystopian visions of Soviet modernity and were a forum for critical ideas and nationalist sentiments that were mobilized in anti-Soviet revolutionary laughter in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Authoritarian Laughter illustrates that Soviet Western peripheries were unstable and their governance was limited. While authoritarian states engage in a statecraft of the everyday and seek to engineer intimate lives, authoritarianism is defied not only in revolutions, but in the many stories people tell each other about themselves in jokes, cartoons, and satires.

A Stage for Debate presents a detailed analysis of the repertoire of the leading German-language stage of the nineteenth century, Vienna’s Burgtheater. The book explores the extent to which the Burgtheater repertoire contributed to important political and cultural debates on individual liberty, the role of women in society, and the understanding of national and regional identity. The relevance of the Burgtheater as a forum for political debate is assessed not by the degree to which the performed plays transgressed established norms, but by the range of positions that were voiced on a given topic. Martin Wagner investigates the roughly 1,000 plays from across Europe that were introduced to the Burgtheater’s repertoire between 1814 and 1867 by combining a general overview with detailed interpretations of especially successful plays. Wagner reveals that the Burgtheater was significantly more involved in contemporary debates than the stereotype of this stage as an artistically refined but apolitical institution suggests. Drawing from theatre studies and German and Austrian studies more broadly, A Stage for Debate revises the history of one of Europe’s leading theatres.

This text on transnational civil litigation presents the basic legal doctrine within a larger, illuminating conceptual framework. The book organizes the subject around three basic concepts: national sovereignty, individual rights, and political accountability. After highlighting the unique problems of litigation across national boundaries, the book explores the essential role of individual rights, especially due process and human rights. It then examines the role of the political branches of government in enacting the statutes and treaties that govern transnational litigation. Texture analysis is an important generic research area of machine vision. The potential areas of application include biomedical image analysis, industrial inspection, analysis of satellite or aerial imagery, content-based retrieval from image databases, document analysis, biometric person authentication, scene analysis for robot navigation, texture synthesis for computer graphics and animation, and image coding. Texture analysis has been a topic of intensive research for over three decades, but the progress has been very slow.A workshop on “Texture Analysis in Machine Vision” was held at the University of Oulu, Finland, in 1999, providing a forum for presenting recent research results and for discussing how to make progress in order to increase the usefulness of texture in practical applications. This book contains extended and revised versions of the papers presented at the workshop. The first part of the book deals with texture analysis methodology, while the second part covers various applications. The book gives a unique view of different approaches and applications of texture analysis. The Nazi trials in the Federal Republic were a forum in which the crimes of National Socialism were tried as early as the early post-war period. The Holocaust survivors and former concentration camp inmates had a particularly controversial task as witnesses, which, however, has so far received little attention from researchers. In many cases it was up to them alone to convict the accused with their reports. At the same time, they were exposed to massive distrust from the German judiciary, which considered the survivors too biased to make objective assessments. The interrogations and confrontations with the perpetrators also presented a high burden. Nevertheless, thousands of survivors gave testimony of their own free will and endured the hardships to advance the prosecution of the crimes. Using the example of four Auschwitz trials from three decades, Katharina Stengel examines the importance of the victims for the Nazi trials, how the lawyers dealt with them and their incomprehensible reports, how the witnesses themselves acted in court, what concerns they pursued and what conclusions they drew from their experiences.

The 18th annual meeting of the Symposium on Mediterranean Archaeology (SOMA) was held in Wrocław-Poland, 24th to 26th April 2014. Since prehistoric times the Mediterranean has acted as a stage for intense interactions between groups inhabiting regions that are now studied mainly within various sub-fields of ancient studies. In recent years, however, the development of research techniques and analytical models of archaeological evidence have identified similar historical paths that are similar, if not, in some cases, common to these disparate areas of the ancient world from West (Iberian peninsula) to East (Anatolia and Levant), from North (Europe, Black Sea Coast) to South (Maghreb and Egypt). The 18th SOMA provided a forum for presentations related to the above-mentioned topics, as well as general themes such as the role of the sea, trade, colonization, even piracy, using archaeological data collected within contexts associated with the Mediterranean Basin and the area referred to as the Ancient Near East, ranging chronologically from the Prehistoric to Medieval periods. The many large earthquakes of the last decade, including the series in Christchurch in 2010-2011 and the Tohoku earthquake in Japan, have focused even greater attention on the cyclic behaviour of soils during these events. Great advances have recently been made on all aspects of soil dynamics, from the prediction of liquefaction based on site investigation to the impact of shaking on geotechnical systems. The Géotechnique Symposium in Print took place at the Institution of Civil Engineers on 15 June 2015 and provided a forum to discuss the latest advances in the area of geotechnical earthquake engineering. These proceedings bring together the international research presented at the symposium and a number of related papers which were published in earlier issues of Géotechnique. The Werkgruppe Graz designed the terraced housing estate in Graz-St. Peter in 1965, during a period of societal upheaval. The complex was eventually built between 1972 and 1978. The planning group—members of the avant-garde artists’ association Forum Stadtpark—took a stand against the established system of residential construction, which was characterized by monotone design and the urban sprawl of single-family homes. Instead, they championed the utopian approach of involving residents in the planning process, which was reflected in the development’s basic structuralist framework with adaptable living units. Comprised of four terraced housing blocks in exposed concrete at the edge of Graz, the estate’s sculptural, brutalist appearance received international acclaim. Gelebte Utopie is the first book to provide a collection of texts of architectural commentary and context on the settlement. It additionally offers insights into the inhabitants’ living spaces and is enriched with artistic projects.

To the public's eye, lobbying is still a highly obscure trade. Lobbyists are generally perceived to work behind closed doors in order to influence legislation -- what really happens is unknown to the public. To make interest representatives more visible, both the European Union and the United States have developed mechanisms to register lobbyists. However, while US legislation now forces lobbyists to register and report their influential work by fixed deadlines, the EU's registration remains voluntary due to the lack of a legal basis.
