This book studies the potential functions of one-dimensional recurrent random walks on the lattice of integers with step distribution of infinite variance. The central focus is on obtaining reasonably nice estimates of the potential function. These estimates are then applied to various situations, yielding precise asymptotic results on, among other things, hitting probabilities of finite sets, overshoot distributions, Green functions on long finite intervals and the half-line, and absorption probabilities of two-sided exit problems.The potential function of a random walk is a central object in fluctuation theory. If the variance of the step distribution is finite, the potential function has a simple asymptotic form, which enables the theory of recurrent random walks to be described in a unified way with rather explicit formulae. On the other hand, if the variance is infinite, the potential function behaves in a wide range of ways depending on the step distribution, which the asymptotic behaviour of many functionals of the random walk closely reflects.In the case when the step distribution is attracted to a strictly stable law, aspects of the random walk have been intensively studied and remarkable results have been established by many authors. However, these results generally do not involve the potential function, and important questions still need to be answered. In the case where the random walk is relatively stable, or if one tail of the step distribution is negligible in comparison to the other on average, there has been much less work. Some of these unsettled problems have scarcely been addressed in the last half-century. As revealed in this treatise, the potential function often turns out to play a significant role in their resolution. Aimed at advanced graduate students specialising in probability theory, this book will also be of interest to researchers and engineers working with random walks and stochastic systems.

The modern problems of the limit theorems of probability theory are treated in the simple case of coin tossing. This book explores the way Woolf used essay-writing techniques to develop her conception of the modern novel. The focus of this study is on Virginia Woolf's vast output of essays and their relation to her fiction. Randi Saloman shows that it was by employing tools and methods drawn from the essay genre - such as fragmentation, stream-of-consciousness and dialogic engagement with the reader - that Woolf managed to leave behind the realism of the 19th-century novel. Saloman draws on key theorists of the essay such as T.W. Adorno and Georg Lukacs, as well as on more recent scholars of 'essayism' (a term devised by Robert Musil to describe the hypothetical quality of the essay mode). She shows that the essay, as genre and mode, shaped Woolf's writing, and modern fiction more generally, in ways that have not yet been articulated. RELIABILITY EVALUATION OF DYNAMIC SYSTEMS EXCITED IN TIME DOMAIN – REDSET Multi-disciplinary approach to structural reliability analysis for dynamic loadings offering a practical alternative to the random vibration theory and simulation Reliability Evaluation of Dynamic Systems Excited in Time Domain – REDSET is a multidisciplinary concept that enables readers to estimate the underlying risk that could not be solved in the past. The major hurdle was that the required limit state functions (LSFs) are implicit in nature and the lack of progress in the reliability evaluation methods for this class of problems. The most sophisticated deterministic analysis requires that the dynamic loadings must be applied in the time domain. To satisfy these requirements, REDSET is developed. Different types and forms of dynamic loadings including seismic, wind-induced wave, and thermomechanical loading in the form of heating and cooling of solder balls used in computer chips are considered to validate REDSET. Time domain representations and the uncertainty quantification procedures including the use of multiple time histories are proposed and demonstrated for all these dynamic loadings. Both onshore and offshore structures are used for validation. The potential of REDSET is demonstrated for implementing the Performance Based Seismic Design (PBSD) concept now under development in the United States. For wider multidisciplinary applications, structures are represented by finite elements to capture different types of nonlinearity more appropriately. Any computer program capable of conducting nonlinear time domain dynamic analysis can be used, and the underlying risk can be estimated with the help of several dozens or hundreds of deterministic finite element analyses, providing an alternative to the simulation approach. To aid comprehension of REDSET, numerous illustrative examples and solution strategies are presented in each chapter.
