Hal Leonard Corporation Everything's Bigger in Texas: The Life and Times of Kinky Friedman
Kinky Friedman has always maintained his Kinkster persona and hidden Richard Friedman from the public eye. Using one-liners, humor, and occasional rudeness, he follows the advice of his friend Bob Dylan to keep an aura of mystery. Author Mary Lou Sullivan spent many contentious days and nights at Kinky's Texas Hill Country ranch before he trusted her enough to open up and speak candidly.Best known as an irreverent cigar-chomping Jewish country-and-western singer, turned author, turned politician, Kinky has dined on monkey brains in the jungles of Borneo, supped with presidents, and vacationed with Bob Dylan in the tiny fishing village of Yelapa, Mexico.A satirist who loves pushing the envelope, he's been attacked onstage, received bomb threats, and put on the only show in Austin City Limits' history deemed too offensive to air. From the 1970s music scene in L.A. with Tom Waits and the Band, to political platforms advocating legalized marijuana, to friendships with John Belushi, Joseph Heller, Don Imus, Willie Nelson, Dwight Yoakam, and Billy Bob Thornton, this is the candid account – based on dozens and years of interviews – of the larger-than-life Texan who is still writing books and songs, recording albums, and performing for enthusiastic audiences throughout the world.

Running Press,U.S. The Da Vinci Women: The Untold Feminist Power of Leonardo's Art
Leonardo da Vinci was a revolutionary thinker, artist and inventor who has been written about and celebrated for centuries. Lesser known, however, is his revolutionary and empowering portrayal of the modern female, centuries before the first women's liberation movements. Before da Vinci, portraits of women in Italy were still, impersonal and mostly shown in profile. Leonardo pushed the boundaries of female depiction having several of his female subjects, including his Mona Lisa, gaze at the viewer, giving them an authority which was withheld from women at the time.Art historian and journalist Kia Vahland recounts Leonardo's entire life from April 15, 1452, as a child born out of wedlock in Vinci up through his death on May 2, 1519, in the French castle of von Cloux. Included throughout are 80 sketches and paintings showcasing Leonardo's approach to the female form (including anatomical sketches of birth) and other artwork as well as examples from other artists from the 15th and 16th centuries. Vahland explains how artists like Raphael, Giorgione, Giovanni Bellini and the young Titian were influenced by da Vinci's women while Michelangelo, da Vinci's main rival, created masculine images of woman that counters Leonardo's depictions.

Hal Leonard Corporation Cervantes's Eight Interludes
Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616) is Spain's most famous author primarily because of his celebrated novel ÊDon QuixoteÊ. His first love however was the theater for which he wrote extensively. His ÊInterludesÊ published 400 years ago in 1615 are short comic plays that explore the underbelly of Renaissance Spanish society. Their characters include hillbillies and con artists pimps and prostitutes adulterous wives and jealous husbands and an array of other comical figures. Cervantes's treatment of them is simultaneously critical and sympathetic. Although interludes tend to be works of light comedy Cervantes often imbues his with deeper themes.ÞCharles Patterson a scholar of Hispanic theater has created translations of the ÊInterludesÊ that are true to the earthiness of the originals but designed to be readily playable for today's actors and accessible to modern audiences. This book includes an introduction that places the plays in context briefly describing the life of Cervantes theater in early modern Spain Cervantes's interludes and Patterson's approach to translating them. Casual readers theater and literature students and professional actors alike will delight in these comedic gems that reveal a less familiar side of one of history's greatest writers.

Hal Leonard Corporation On the Road: Recording the Stars in a Golden Era of Live Music
This book tells the story of a life spent on the road recording the rich diversity of music in America when it was a major part of our lives, not just digital background noise. For music fans, there was a golden era of live music stretching from the 1960s through the 1980s, and even evolving into the 1990s, if you want to be generous. In the pre digital era, music fans spent a large part of their free time (and money) listening to their favorite artist’s recordings. It was an analog world so if they wanted to hear the music, they actually had to listen to the radio, buy the records, and go to the concerts. Popular artists had long performed live concerts in the major markets, but it took rock ‘n' roll to make national touring a viable business. Touring sound systems grew from scratch to keep up with larger and larger venues. Likewise, the ability to record those shows had to grow as well. The rudimentary collection of semi-professional gear grew into full-blown remote recording studios to keep up with the demand for live records, films and broadcasts. The truly wonderful thing about the remote recording business was the author experienced so many different musical cultures. Where else could you go from recording a tour with The Rolling Stones to a TV special with Mohamed Ali at the Apollo Theater? How about the Season Opening of Carnegie Hall on PBS TV (with a different major orchestra every year) to Frank Zappa’s annual Halloween Show? Or maybe a Yoko Ono tour behind the 1980s Iron Curtain to The Eagles in modern Australia? Then there are worldwide live broadcasts like the Academy Awards and the Grammy Awards to intimate jazz settings with Miles Davis or Wynton Marsalis. Compare the grandeur of the Metropolitan Opera to the irreverent comedy of Saturday Night Live. On The Road contains the stories of recording all that music live in its natural habitat, the clubs, theaters, concert halls and arenas. There were only a few companies that succeeded in the rough and tumble business of live recording. The author was one of the most successful live recording engineers and the constructor of remote recording studios during that era, with thousands of live shows to his credit.

Hal Leonard Corporation Mathilde Wesendonck, Isolde's Dream
Truly great compositions spring like Athena from Zeus' skull at the juncture of genius and passion. In ÊMathilde Wesendonck: Isolde's DreamÊ author Judith Cabaud calls on a host of heretofore undiscovered resources to tell the story of Mathilde Wesendonck muse and paramour to Richard Wagner and later Johannes Brahms. Alma Mahler eat your heart out.ÞIn or about August 1857 Richard Wagner's character changed. He abandoned ÊDer Ring des NibelungenÊ the Gesamtkunstwerk he'd begun work on nearly a decade earlier tore through a short set of songs now known as the ÊWesendonck LiederÊ and dove headlong into ÊTristan und IsoldeÊ eine Handlung whose seminal influence would ricochet down the ensuing century of Western romantic music. Why the dramatic shift?ÞWagner had been struck by lightning ä twice. The first bolt was sighted across Europe; his name was Arthur Schopenhauer. The second was restricted to a insular social world centered at the estate of Otto Wesendonck one of Wagner's patrons. Her name was Mathilde Wesendonck and this is her story.

Hal Leonard Corporation U2’s The Joshua Tree: Planting Roots in Mythic America
U2 planted the seeds for The Joshua Tree during an existential journey through America. As Irishmen in the 1970s, the band grew up with the belief that America was a place of freedom and prosperity, a symbol of hope and a refuge for all people. However, global politics of the 1980s undermined that impression and fostered hypocritical policies that manipulated Americans and devastated people around the world. Originally conceived as "The Two Americas," The Joshua Tree was U2's critique of America. Rather than living up to the ideal that the country was "an idea that belongs to people who need it most," the band found that America sacrificed equality and justice for populism and fascism. This book explores the political, social, and cultural themes rooted in The Joshua Tree when it was originally released in 1987 and how those themes resonated as a response to the election of Donald Trump when U2 toured for the album's 30th anniversary. The author juxtaposes the band's existential journey through America with his own journey connecting with his Irish roots by becoming a citizen in the age of Trump and places U2's and The Joshua Tree's relevance in context with the current political climate.
