University of Delaware Press Authorship in the Long Eighteenth Century
This book deals with changing conditions and conceptions of authorship in the long eighteenth century, a period often said to have witnessed the birth of the modern author. It focuses not on authorial self-presentation or self-revelation but on an author’s interactions with booksellers, collaborators, rivals, correspondents, patrons, and audiences. Challenging older accounts of the development of authorship in the period as well as newer claims about the “public sphere” and the “professional writer,” it engages with recent work on print culture and the history of the book. Methodologically eclectic, it moves from close readings to strategic contextualization. The book is organized both chronologically and topically. Early chapters deal with writers – notably Milton and Dryden – at the beginning of the long eighteenth century, and later chapters focus more on writers — among them Johnson, Gray, and Gibbon — toward its end. Looking beyond the traditional canon, it considers a number of little-known or little-studied writers, including Richard Bentley, Thomas Birch, William Oldys, James Ralph, and Thomas Ruddiman. Some of the essays are organized around a single writer, but most deal with a broad topic – literary collaboration, literary careers, the republic of letters, the alleged rise of the “professional writer,” and the rather different figure of the “author by profession.” Published by University of Delaware Press. Distributed worldwide by Rutgers University Press.

John Wiley and Sons Ltd Representations of Youth: The Study of Youth and Adolescence in Britain and America
Representations of Youth examines the various constructions of 'youth' and 'adolescence' in recent British and North American research. Mainstream and radical approaches have presented a series of 'crises' about young people in relation to, among other things, unemployment, 'teenage pregnancy' and 'delinquency'. This book considers research in psychology, sociology, education, criminology and cultural studies in order to assess these accounts. The author offers a critical review of a wide range of findings about young people in areas as diverse as education and training, leisure, family life and sexuality. She shows that whilst youth research texts do not reflect young people's experiences in any straightforward manner, they do indicate the various complex and contradictory ways in which 'youth', 'adolescence' and specific groups of young people are represented in contemporary western societies. In so arguing, she presents new terms for thinking about the position of young people today. This is an important new text accessibly written for students of sociology, social psychology and contemporary culture in both Britain and the USA. It will also be of great interest to social science researchers in a range of other disciplines.

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Global Climate Change: The Science, Economics and Politics
Global climate change cannot be understood without knowing the fundamental principles of science, economics, and politics that condition our policy choices. To that end, the contributors to this volume, experts in their respective fields, take a comprehensive look at the major issues involved. This volume is written for policymakers and informed citizenry who want to understand at a general level the complexities of global climate change without becoming enmeshed in technical minutia. The introduction emphasizes the core fact that climate change issues cut across disciplines. William Schlesinger and Gerald North explain the carbon cycle and how increased greenhouse gases impact temperature. The economics papers deal with the applicability of benefit/cost analysis and then proceed to examine the benefits of avoiding temperature change versus the costs of the various CO2 abatement options. Finally, David Victor, a Stanford political scientist, asks which policies are feasible in a world where the incentives differ dramatically among countries. The book closes with open letters to the President of the United States.Policymakers along with academics, students and any reader interested in a broad look at the important issues in the global climate change story will find this book indispensable.

University of British Columbia Press Training the Excluded for Work: Access and Equity for Women, Immigrants, First Nations, Youth, and People with Low Income
In recent years job training programs have suffered severe fundingcuts and the focus of training programs has shifted to meet thedirectives of funders rather than the needs of the community. How dothese changes to job training affect disadvantaged workers and theunemployed? In an insightful and comprehensive discussion of job education inCanada, Cohen and her contributors pool findings from a five-yearcollaborative study of training programs. Good training programs, theyargue, are essential in providing people who are chronicallydisadvantaged in the workplace with tools to acquire more secure,better-paying jobs. In the ongoing shift toward a neo-liberal economicmodel, government policies have engendered a growing reliance onprivate and market-based training schemes. These new training policieshave undermined equity. In an attempt to redress social inequities in the workplace, theauthors examine various kinds of training programs and recommendspecific policy initiatives to improve access to these programs. Thisbook will be of interest to policymakers, academics, and studentsinterested in policy, work, equity, gender and education.
