The White Cliff is a collection of writings about the best sea cliff in the world: Gogarth. This book has a historical narrative into which are embedded essays by various protagonists. The book is not just about the place, though. The climbers who have been drawn to touch the stone of Gogarth have often been the best of their generation and have pioneered amazing routes elsewhere. The book is also about their personal stories of life and death. It details the history of the exploration of the cliff in the context of the time period, climbing standards and the development of equipment and techniques. In the process, it touches on a myriad of related issues. The chapters are structured by area. Most of the essays and images are previously unpublished but some have appeared before in books, magazines, or journals. Grant Farquhar has been climbing for over 35 years. Currently resident (and climbing) in Bermuda, he was highly active on Gogarth in the 90s and despite living faraway has retained his affection for the place. A giant tsunami hit the staid Ann Arbor campus of the University of Michigan in 1969 when it was announced that Glenn Edward “Bo” Schembechler was to be the new head football coach, replacing the beloved Bump Elliott. Efforts to pronounce the last name correctly came in response to thousands of questioners asking “Bo who?” but it didn’t take long before his name and the Wolverines’ resurrected football fortunes were the talk not only of the town, but of the hundreds of thousands of Michigan alumni across the country and around the world. Bo’s Warriors is the story of that man and the moribund football program he revived. Bo won a school record 194 games while losing only 48 and never had a losing season. His Michigan teams won or shared the Big Ten title 13 times and made 10 Rose Bowl appearances. In 1968 under Elliott, archrival Ohio State had pounded the Wolverines 50-14, and to add insult to injury, Buckeye coach Woody Hayes went for a two point conversion late in the game rather than kicking the extra point. When asked why he went for two, Hayes is said to have replied, “because I couldn’t go for three.” The next year, Bo’s first as coach, the defending national champion Buckeyes were 17 point favorites, but the 7-2 Wolverines dominated Ohio State and beat them 24-12. In a single afternoon, Schembechler had resurrected Michigan’s proud football tradition and returned the program to the country’s elite. Bo’s Warriors is the story of Bo’s first year as coach, seen through the eyes of several players and one assistant coach, and making the excitement of that historic season come alive.

New Surrealism: The Uncanny in Contemporary Painting by Robert Zeller offers a sweeping exposition of both historical Surrealism and its legacy in the world of contemporary art. This book marks the long-term installation of Robert Gober’s (born 1954) seminal Untitled (1992) at Glenstone Museum. Untitled is an immersive, multi-sensorial installation with diverse constituent parts: sinks with running water, darkened exterior pathways, a brightly-lit interior chamber, a hand-painted 360-degree mural and discrete sculptural elements made to appear like prison windows, boxes of rat bait and bundles of newspaper. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries large numbers of Scots emigrated to seek their fortunes abroad. Better educated than the English and with a strong Presbyterian ethic, they were unusually successful in business and politics. This was true for New Zealand as elsewhere. Ross & Glendining Ltd was founded in Dunedin in 1862, during the gold rush, by two contrasting characters: Caithness-born John Ross and Robert Glendining, from Dumfries. Initially a drapery importing business, it opened branches throughout New Zealand and warehouses in all the main centers. Careful management and efficient systems enabled the business to grow, despite strong competition from Australia. After the investment boom of the seventies, R&G began to diversify, investing in sheep runs, a woollen mill, other manufacturing, and even a coal mine. This history offers not only a portrait of a firm but a window on the development of the New Zealand economy and the emergence of a manufacturing sector.

The global Black Lives Matter campaign has given greater exposure to the extent and insidious nature of the structural and systemic racism that exists in all strata of our society and has provided renewed impetus to the urgent need to challenge and eradicate racism in all its forms and wherever it is found. Sadly, sport has not been immune from this, especially so in the case of football. For too long, there were attempts to hide and mitigate racist attitudes and actions within the game, but thanks to the growing profile and visibility of black and minority ethnic (BAME) players both past and present – Viv Anderson, Cyrille Regis, Jimmy Carter, Les Ferdinand, Pat Nevin and Ruud Gullit to name just a few – and almost three decades of education and campaigning led by Kick It Out, attitudes have changed. However, now is not the time to be complacent – there’s still a great deal left to do. Throughout his entire journalistic career, leading sportswriter Harry Harris has championed the fight against racism in football. Now, within these pages, he shines a timely spotlight on the Beautiful Game, revealing the forces within football that have both helped expose and challenge racism – and, at times, sadly, hinder more rapid positive change. Most Americans strongly favor equality of opportunity if not outcome, but many are weary of poverty's seeming immunity to public policy. This helps to explain the recent attention paid to cultural and genetic explanations of persistent poverty, including claims that economic inequality is a function of intellectual ability, as well as more subtle depictions of the United States as a meritocracy where barriers to achievement are personal--either voluntary or inherited--rather than systemic. This volume of original essays by luminaries in the economic, social, and biological sciences, however, confirms mounting evidence that the connection between intelligence and inequality is surprisingly weak and demonstrates that targeted educational and economic reforms can reduce the income gap and improve the country's aggregate productivity and economic well-being. It also offers a novel agenda of equal access to valuable associations. Amartya Sen, John Roemer, Robert M. Hauser, Glenn Loury, Orley Ashenfelter, and others sift and analyze the latest arguments and quantitative findings on equality in order to explain how merit is and should be defined, how economic rewards are distributed, and how patterns of economic success persist across generations. Moving well beyond exploration, they draw specific conclusions that are bold yet empirically grounded, finding that schooling improves occupational success in ways unrelated to cognitive ability, that IQ is not a strong independent predictor of economic success, and that people's associations--their neighborhoods, working groups, and other social ties--significantly explain many of the poverty traps we observe.
