Jane Austen and Comedy takes for granted two related notions. First, Jane Austen’s books are funny; they induce laughter, and that laughter is worth attending to for a variety of reasons. Second, Jane Austen’s books are comedies, understandable both through the generic form that ends in marriage after the potential hilarity of romantic adversity and through a more general promise of wish fulfillment. In bringing together Austen and comedy, which are both often dismissed as superfluous or irrelevant to a contemporary world, this collection of essays directs attention to the ways we laugh, the ways that Austen may make us do so, and the ways that our laughter is conditioned by the form in which Austen writes: comedy. This catalogue focuses on works on paper by contemporary artist Jane Hammond, who garnered a reputation in the art world as a painter in New York in the 1990s. Through the interplay of text and recycled images, Hammond has produced a series of fresh, compelling, and provocative pieces. Most recently, Hammond has launched an exploratory journey into the realms of memory and communication, evoking mass media and scientific concepts while infusing her colorful works with a sense of youthful wonder. The catalogue’s sixty-four featured works show the diversity of her oeuvre. These pieces, though paper-based, are rarely confined to two dimensions or to a small scale. They combine mixed-media collage, text, and a series of symbols that create a visual vocabulary found throughout her work. This exhibit is a testament to Hammond’s scope of imagery, depth of symbolism, and willingness to expand the boundariesof artistic creation. The catalogue will accompany an exhibition of the same name that has its debut at the Mount Holyoke Art Museum and will then travel to other museums across the country beginning December 17. Sanditon is Jane Austen’s last novel, unfinished when she died in 1817. A comedy, it continues the strain of burlesque and caricature she wrote as a teenager and in private throughout her life. In her ground-breaking essay, Todd contextualizes Austen’s life and work, Sanditon’s connection with Northanger Abbey (1819) and Emma (1816), Jane Austen’s insecurity of income and home, and the Austen family’s financial speculations. She examines the work’s discussion of the moral and social problems of capitalism, entrepreneurship, and growing tourism, and their effect on traditional values and rural communities. Todd explains the early nineteenth-century culture of self: the exploitation of hypochondria, health fads, seaside resorts, and miracle cures. Arguing that Sanditon is an innovative, ebullient study of human beings ’ vagaries (rather than using common sense, Sanditon’s characters follow intuition and bodily signs), she shows Austen’s themes to be akin to contemporary concerns about self-obsession and the culture of narcissism, as well as a comic study of the gap between how we think of ourselves and how we appear and sound to others.

I barely leave my bedroom. Therapists are clueless and condescending. So I start my own form of therapy - but writing about my experience awakens uncomfortable memories, ones that should’ve stayed buried. How far will I have to go to uncover the truth of what happened - and will it break me forever?
