Charles Simeon was well known among his peers for many things including being one of the first among his set to purchase the new invention of an umbrella. He was smart and well turned out and enjoyed all the pleasures that life offered a well educated young man in the 1700s studying at Cambridge University. His interest in religion, however, didn’t go much beyond trying to salve his conscience by good works. Yet, one day at the age of 19 when he was preparing to take communion, he realised his sin could only be dealt with by transferring the guilt of it to another – the Lord Jesus Christ. With this realisation his heart was flooded with gospel peace and from that day on Charles Simeon was set on a remarkable pathway to spread the good news of Salvation through preaching God’s Word.

Few works of history have succeeded so completely in forcing their readers to take a fresh look at the evidence as Christopher Hill's The World Turned Upside Down – and that achievement is rooted firmly in Hill's exceptional problem-solving skills. Traditional interpretations of the English Civil War concentrated heavily on a top-down analysis of the doings of king and parliament. This study reveals how women’s visionary texts played a central role within medieval discourses of authorship, reading, and devotion. From the twelfth to the fifteenth centuries, women across northern Europe began committing their visionary conversations with Christ to the written word. Translating Christ in this way required multiple transformations: divine speech into human language, aural event into textual artifact, visionary experience into linguistic record, and individual encounter into communal repetition. This ambitious study shows how women’s visionary texts form an underexamined literary tradition within medieval religious culture. Barbara Zimbalist demonstrates how, within this tradition, female visionaries developed new forms of authorship, reading, and devotion. Through these transformations, the female visionary authorized herself and her text, and performed a rhetorical imitatio Christi that offered models of interpretive practice and spoken devotion to her readers. This literary-historical tradition has not yet been fully recognized on its own terms. By exploring its development in hagiography, visionary texts, and devotional literature, Zimbalist shows how this literary mode came to be not only possible but widespread and influential. The study of "in Christ" language in New Testament scholarship has received widespread attention in recent years. Nevertheless, despite all the perspectives from which scholars have treated this topic, one aspect of "in Christ" language has received only scant attention: its ritual or sacramental aspect. While theological, epistemological, and linguistic factors have contributed to the downplaying of rituals like baptism and the Lord's Supper in the New Testament, Yu Chen develops the framework of a ritual transformation model from ritual theories to place the study of ritual in its rightful place. Accordingly, the author focuses on the historical and social implications of the ritual performance of baptism and the Lord's Supper, which are used to explain the mechanisms of union with Christ. Finally, he argues that rituals provide participants with access to the transformative experience of encountering the risen Messiah.

The cathedral church of Christ in Oxford - better known as Christ Church Cathedral - was established in 1546. It forms one half of Christ Church, the unique joint foundation of cathedral and university college created by King Henry VIII. Today's cathedral occupies the site of a monastery founded in the late seventh century by Frideswide, patron saint of Oxford and its university. In the early twelfth century it was re-founded as an Augustinian priory, and 400 years later it met its nemesis in Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, whose plan for an Oxford college grander than any other caused its dissolution.
