Lords and Masters is a work of fiction, but with mastery and style Macdonell uses his undoubted journalistic skill to unmask much that was unpleasant in the West End Society circles of the early 1930s. He exposes the hypocrisy of the monied class and with biting satire weaves a tale of intrigue, turning it into a thriller. His character depiction of the unscrupulous war-profiteer Sir Montagu Anderton-Mawle is a masterpiece and his ability to so ably define all that is wrong in the world - as relevant today as it was in the 1930s - reveals a genius in the art of narrative composition. Although written in 1936, Macdonell was early in seeing that war was becoming inevitable and in Lords and Masters he foresaw with frightening prescience how events would unfold. He was correct in foreseeing the attack on Singapore, but was happily wrong in regard to Japanese attacks on San Francisco and Montreal. The book is built around the character of James Hanson, a steel millionaire, and the cynical manoeuvrings of those who would seek to profiteer out of human misery. James' youngest daughter, Veronica, is a Nazi-lover, presumably modelled on Unity Mitford. "Veronica, dear," said Mrs. Hanson admiringly, "aren't you being a little impertinent?" "No, seriously, Daddy, that atrocity stuff is all rot. Hitler wouldn't allow it for a moment. He isn't that sort of man. A few Jews have been beaten up perhaps, but that's nothing. Veronica, who heartily despised the physical appearance of any male under about six-foot-three, was not so narrow-minded as to despise male intelligence simply because it was encased in a relatively dwarfish body. After all, no one could call the Fuehrer particularly handsome, and yet what a mammoth intellect he had got! Dr. Goebbels was positively ugly, but look how he scattered the non-Aryans with his inner fires of patriotism and genius! Happily for Macdonell, England was not invaded in 1940, otherwise he might have been on the list of those to be rounded up.

The mystery began simply enough with her identity. Who was she? As a young woman, she took the name, “Place,” from the maiden name of the mother of her lover, Harry Longabaugh (the Sundance Kid), and combined it with several first names, including "Mrs. Ethel Place.” The Pinkertons knew her as "Ethel,” "Ethal,” "Eva," and "Rita" before finally settling on "Etta" for their wanted posters. After Sundance introduced her to Robert Parker (Butch Cassidy), the three joined the rest of their Wild Bunch gang and set off on a spree of bank, stagecoach, and train robberies. With the law hot on their heels, they rode up to Robber’s Roost in southwestern Utah where they laid low until word reached local authorities of their whereabouts. On the run again, Place accompanied Longabaugh to New York City where they purchased a lapel watch and stickpin at Tiffany’s before pausing to pose for the famed DeYoung portrait at a Union Square photo studio on Broadway. On February 20, 1901, she sailed with Butch and Sundance, posing as Etta’s fictional brother "James Ryan," aboard the British ship, Herminius, for Buenos Aires. Settling there with the two outlaws on a ranch they purchased jointly near Cholila in the Chubut Province of west-central Argentina, they were granted 15,000 acres of adjacent land to develop, 2,500 of which belonged to Place, who had the distinction of being the first woman in Argentina to own real estate there. On March 3, 1902, she and Longabaugh returned to New York City on the SS Soldier Prince to visit her family and friends. On April 2, they registered at a New York City rooming house before touring Coney Island and visiting his family. They traveled to Dr. Pierce's Invalid Hotel in Buffalo where she underwent an unspecified medical treatment. They sought additional treatment in Denver before returning to Buenos Aires from New York on July 10, 1902, aboard the steamer, Honorius, where they posed as stewards. On August 9, she registered herself and Sundance at the Hotel Europa in Buenos Aires and six days later sailed with him aboard the steamer SS Chubut to return to their Cholila ranch. She made another visit to the states with Longabaugh in the summer of 1904 where the Pinkertons traced them to Fort Worth, Texas, and to the St. Louis World Fair but failed to arrest them before they returned to Argentina. In early 1905, the trio sold their Cholila ranch as the law closed in on them. The Pinkertons had known their whereabouts for several months, but the rainy season had prevented their agents from traveling there to make an arrest. Governor Julio Lezana issued a warrant, but before it could be executed, Sheriff Edward Humphreys, a Welsh Argentine who was friends with Parker and enamored of Place, tipped them off. The trio fled north to San Carlos de Bariloche where they embarked on the steamer Condor across Lake Nahuel Huapi into Chile. By the end of that year, they were back in Argentina. On December 19, 1904, Place, Longabaugh, Parker, and an unknown male robbed the Banco de la Nacion in Villa Mercedes, four hundred miles west of Buenos Aires. Pursued by armed federales, they crossed the Pampas and the Andes and returned to Chile. But Place had grown tired of life on the run and deeply lamented the loss of their ranch and the promise of stability it had held for her. In June 1906, Longabaugh accompanied her from Valparaiso, Chile, to San Francisco, where she sought medical aid and kissed him goodbye for the last time before he returned to South America and infamy. As for Etta Place, her mystery had only begun. And it would continue for another forty-six years before finally being resolved.

At its peak, the South Wales railway network was one of the most complex in the world. Its primary purpose was to transport Coal from source to point of consumption or export via the various docks. To this was added the other raw materials necessary for making Iron and ultimately Steel, together with the respective products of that industry. True, there was no glory in this day to day phenomenon and as a consequence, the area has been poorly represented in the annals of the British railway network. Even that paragon of railway publicity the Great Western, found easier plums to pick elsewhere on its system. However, in addition to the GW, the area was a magnet for the London & North Western, the Midland Railway and not to be forgotten, the 15 indigenous companies. Yet, in terms of traffic, engineering enterprise, operating practices and locomotive types, the area boasted an unequalled variety which this book attempts to reflect. Many of the photographs have not been published before and capture an essence of the variety to be found. The captions contain extensive details to supplement the photographic record enabling a more comprehensive appreciation and understanding of what was involved. It is difficult to appreciate the railway was once a Common Carrier obliged to convey any consignment offered. Even though Coal was predominant other traffic, including the more unusual, are also featured; Although of secondary importance in regard to revenue, Passenger services were carefully dovetailed into the intensive freight operation and matched any other location's provision. After the 1923 Grouping, the GW became the major player in South Wales. It absorbed all 15 of the independent companies and further extended its policy of standardisation. Nevertheless, where the smaller companies demonstrated good practices, these were embraced. The L&NW and MR elements became LMSR but still remained far flung tentacles from the parent. All this is recognised here albeit in proportion. The Gallery aims to provide a flavour of what the railways of South Wales had to offer and enlighten the reader as to its major part in the national network.

I wonder if it worked that way in those days for any of her other victims--Woody Allen, for instance, or Stanley Kubrick." On Andy Warhol as a dinner guest: "I met him many times over the last twenty years of his life, but I can't say I knew him, which is what most people say, even those who were his intimates. Once he came to dinner with a group of his Factory friends at my apartment. I remember that he or someone else left a dirty plate, with chicken bones and knife and fork, in my bathroom wash basin. It seemed to be a symbolic gesture, to be a matter of style, and not just bad manners."

In 1972, Diana returned to center stage for the final act of her life at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute as its Special Consultant, a job she invented. She masterminded costume extravaganzas and contributed to the new age of blockbuster exhibitions in which museum attendance soared and people poured into the galleries as never before.

Dr. Watson was the chronicler of every Sherlock Holmes adventure published in The Strand magazine between 1887 and 1927. He wrote them with fastidious accuracy and honesty, so frank in their detailed expression of true human behaviour that they were too risqué for the public morals of the late Victorian era. George Newnes, the editor of The Strand magazine, spent many sleepless nights expurgating each story before its publication. Newnes also discarded Watson’s colourful pictures portraying lively action scenes throughout each submission; they were replaced with more innocuous monochrome illustrations. Newnes’s editing process removed references to Sherlock Holmes’s background and ancestry. The same goes for all of the leading characters. Maybe Newnes thought that accounts of individual backgrounds distracted the reader from the exposition of each story? We do not know. In these recently discovered unexpurgated accounts, we meet Holmes’s family and learn about his heritage. Being the narrator, Dr Watson reveals his inner self in intimate detail, followed closely by “the master detective” himself. We find out about Mrs Hudson and how she came to own 221B Baker Street, and how Professor Moriarty became the master criminal of the Victorian underworld. Some of this new material is quite shocking, even by today’s standards, let alone those of 19th century England. By way of an example, here is the original and unexpurgated version of ‘The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle.’ Book 7 synopsis: It is later December in 1889. A battered old hat is the only clue to the mysterious disappearance of a Christmas lunch. But when Sherlock Holmes lays out the facts of the case, Watson finds them incorrigible. A startling revelation at 221B Baker Street adds the dimension of a jewel theft, which sends the detective duo on a tour around central London where they encounter two of the three hazards on the bucket-list of life that a gentleman must never do.
