Apart from presenting all currently known artefacts and contexts of that period in detail, a particular focus was placed on the examination of YN battle axes. They appear to be the most common artefact that is preserved from the YN, and they are very well suited for investigating social phenomena. These artefacts furthermore changed diachronically.While battle axes of the early stage are shaped more or less equally elaborately, late specimens exhibit significant morphological variation and difference, as some specimens were shaped very elaborately whereas others were quite simple. The same difference has been observed for the subsequently used flint daggers. It is suggested that this difference reflects the emergence of a more stratified society.Many battle axes appear to have been deposited as broken pieces. As the ratio of cutting edges to butt ends is unequal (2:1) both in SH and in a wider region and as many pieces have “decorations” (Applikationen, pars pro toto shaft holes), battle axes are regarded as intentionally deposited. Accordingly, a large proportion of single finds are regarded as intentional depositions.Another focus was set on examining the transition to the YN. It is argued that many aspects that are said to characterize the YN are rooted in the preceding Middle Neolithic. A novelty is that social role becomes marked in funerary contexts. Thus, the transformation to the YN marks a certain point where already initiated societal changes become visible for first time. The examination of certain attributes revealed furthermore that there are differences between western and eastern SH which are not determined by chronological changes only. University of California Press Jesus as Mother: Studies in the Spirituality of the High Middle Ages
From the Introduction, by Caroline Walker Bynum: The opportunity to rethink and republish several of my early articles in combination with a new essay on the thirteenth century has led me to consider the continuity - both of argument and of approach - that underlies them. In one sense, their interrelationship is obvious. The first two address a question that was more in the forefront of scholarship a dozen years ago than it is today: the question of differences among religious orders. These two essays set out a method of reading texts for imagery and borrowings as well as for spiritual teaching in order to determine whether individuals who live in different institutional settings hold differing assumptions about the significance of their lives. The essays apply the method to the broader question of differences between regular canons and monks and the narrower question of differences between one kind of monk - the Cistercians - and other religious groups, monastic and nonmonastic, of the twelfth century. The third essay draws on some of the themes of the first two, particularly the discussion of canonical and Cistercian conceptions of the individual brother as example, to suggest an interpretation of twelfth-century religious life as concerned with the nature of groups as well as with affective expression. The fourth essay, again on Cistercian monks, elaborates themes of the first three. Its subsidiary goals are to provide further evidence on distinctively Cistercian attitudes and to elaborate the Cistercian ambivalence about vocation that I delineate in the essay on conceptions of community. It also raises questions that have now become popular in nonacademic as well as academic circles: what significance should we give to the increase of feminine imagery in twelfth-century religious writing by males? Can we learn anything about distinctively male or female spiritualities from this feminization of language? The fifth essay differs from the others in turning to the thirteenth century rather than the twelfth, to women rather than men, to detailed analysis of many themes in a few thinkers rather than one theme in many writers; it is nonetheless based on the conclusions of the earlier studies. The sense of monastic vocation and of the priesthood, of the authority of God and self, and of the significance of gender that I find in the three great mystics of late thirteenth-century Helfta can be understood only against the background of the growing twelfth - and thirteenth-century concern for evangelism and for an approachable God, which are the basic themes of the first four essays. Such connections between the essays will be clear to anyone who reads them. There are, however, deeper methodological and interpretive continuities among them that I wish to underline here. For these studies constitute a plea for an approach to medieval spirituality that is not now - and perhaps has never been - dominant in medieval scholarship. They also provide an interpretation of the religious life of the high Middle Ages that runs against the grain of recent emphases on the emergence of "lay spirituality." I therefore propose to give, as introduction, both a discussion of recent approaches to medieval piety and a short sketch of the religious history of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, emphasizing those themes that are the context for my specific investigations. I do not want to be misunderstood. In providing here a discussion of approaches to and trends in medieval religion I am not claiming that the studies that follow constitute a general history nor that my method should replace that of social, institutional, and intellectual historians. A handful of Cistercians does not typify the twelfth century, nor three nuns the thirteenth. Religious imagery, on which I concentrate, does not tell us how people lived. New to the second edition: 1) A new section about the foundations of set theory has been added at the end of the chapter about sets. The chapter concludes with the section on the cardinality of the number systems. 3) The chapter on the construction of the natural numbers, integers and rational numbers from the Peano Postulates was removed entirely. That material was originally included to provide the needed background about the number systems, particularly for the discussion of the cardinality of sets, but it was always somewhat out of place given the level and scope of this text. The background material about the natural numbers needed for the cardinality of sets has now been summarized in a new section at the start of that chapter, making the chapter both self-contained and more accessible than it previously was. 4) The section on families of sets has been thoroughly revised, with the focus being on families of sets in general, not necessarily thought of as indexed. 5) A new section about the convergence of sequences has been added to the chapter on selected topics. This new section, which treats a topic from real analysis, adds some diversity to the chapter, which had hitherto contained selected topics of only an algebraic or combinatorial nature. 6) A new section called ``You Are the Professor'' has been added to the end of the last chapter. They appear to be the most common artefact that is preserved from the YN, and they are very well suited for investigating social phenomena. These artefacts furthermore changed diachronically.While battle axes of the early stage are shaped more or less equally elaborately, late specimens exhibit significant morphological variation and difference, as some specimens were shaped very elaborately whereas others were quite simple. The same difference has been observed for the subsequently used flint daggers. It is suggested that this difference reflects the emergence of a more stratified society.Many battle axes appear to have been deposited as broken pieces. As the ratio of cutting edges to butt ends is unequal (2:1) both in SH and in a wider region and as many pieces have “decorations” (Applikationen, pars pro toto shaft holes), battle axes are regarded as intentionally deposited. Accordingly, a large proportion of single finds are regarded as intentional depositions.Another focus was set on examining the transition to the YN. It is argued that many aspects that are said to characterize the YN are rooted in the preceding Middle Neolithic. A novelty is that social role becomes marked in funerary contexts. Thus, the transformation to the YN marks a certain point where already initiated societal changes become visible for first time. The examination of certain attributes revealed furthermore that there are differences between western and eastern SH which are not determined by chronological changes only. The Teacher's Moderation Toolkit can be used to standardise and benchmark children's writing at three termly intervals, as a CPD resource to support teachers working together to make judgements and also as a classroom resource to share the expected standards of writing with children. Currently, writing is teacher assessed at both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. Teachers are expected to assess a collection of children's writing that illustrate writing for different purposes and in different forms; for example, a child may write a persuasive letter, an informative leaflet, a story with a flashback, a narrative poem and a survival guide linked to their creative curriculum.Assessing a collection of writing requires teachers to be able to identify features in the child's writing, answering the questions:What can this writer do?What features have they included?Do they meet the expected standard for their year group?Are they on track to be the expected standard by the end of the year?What features are missing from their writing?What are their next steps?Many schools have worked together to create writing portfolios of what is the expected standard for each year group. As a teaching school alliance, we recognised that teachers would benefit from a moderated, standardised toolkit that could both assist and guide teachers when making termly judgements about children's writing.Initially, we worked with English subject leaders spanning a range of local authorities in the north-west of England. Schools were given a set of writing tasks to complete with years 1-6 so that it would be easier to make comparisons when moderating the writing.The first task was a picture prompt of a girl called Lizzie in a silver birch tree (See Appendix A)and children were asked to write a description. The following term, schools were given a choice of writing prompts related to other pictures of Lizzie - a newspaper report, a narrative and a diary.As schools collated evidence of children writing at different points in the year, we decided to offer specific year group moderating sessions where teachers brought samples of children's writing and annotated them in groups (some of these samples feature as part of the resource). At this point teachers did not use any criteria to moderate with. Instead they focused on the question'What can this writer do?' and annotated the writing with appropriate labels; for example, noun phrases, multi-clause sentences, range of tenses, use of direct speech, commas in a list etc.After teachers from each year group had analysed and annotated a range of writing, English subject leaders and moderators began the selection process. Using the writing objectives for each year group, we began to make decisions about what the evidence files should look like.We were very keen for the collections to be realistic, include writing examples that teachers see every day and show obvious progression. We recognised that teachers would want to see examples of writing that spanned across a range of genres. Whilst reading through the annotated examples, we realised that it was not important what age the child who wrote the writing was; for example, a more able year 1 child's writing may have been used in the autumn of year 2 collection and equally a less able year 5 writer may be used as a good example in the spring collection of year 4. Once the collections of writing had been established, a group of SLEs and moderators worked with the resource. Our priority was that there was progression within the toolkit and the summer collection from one year group would directly lead into the autumn collection of the next.Once again, national curriculum objectives and the original work samples in Appendix B were regularly referred to and referenced to ensure consistency.Final decisions were made, the toolkit was agreed upon and resulted in 3 termly collections of writing for each year group from year 1 to 6. All of the writing examples have been typed up verbatim for ease and are annotated with some of the main features expected for specific year groups; for example, writing in the year 1collection is annotated with features teachers would expect to see in year 1 writing as prescribed in the national curriculum. The book is divided into four sections. Section One includes two chapters on history. The opening chapter of the book introduces the subject of continuing engineering education (CEE). There are general sections on continuing education and engineering education and then the subject of CEE is presented. The chapter concludes with some sources for further information including relevant organizations, journals, and workshops. The second chapter in the section is on the 50-year history of engineering distance education at Iowa State University. A timeline with notable events is presented along with the key people involved in the program. Section Two concerns instructional design and contains five chapters. The first is on the learning preferences of working engineers. It presents the results of a study on the learning strategy and verbal-visual preference of engineers working in the oil and gas industry. The results show that the engineers surveyed have statistically significantly different preferences compared to the general population. They prefer problem solving and are highly visually oriented. The second chapter shows how learning styles have been incorporated into a course on process heaters. The learning styles include print, aural, interactive, and visual. The use of multiple learning styles helps training content to match the preferences of most participants. The third chapter in the section provides guidelines for selecting multimedia for CEE. The primary takeaway is that engineers are highly visual so training content should be designed accordingly. Examples include drawings, photos, videos, animations, and virtual reality simulation. The fourth chapter provides recommendations for effective instructional practices for CEE. It discusses hybrid, converged, and hyflex delivery modes. The 60-year curriculum and the growing impacts of alternative credentials and virtual/augmented/extended reality are presented. It concludes with some work and learning models in effective instructional practices. The fifth chapter in the section presents the use of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) in CEE. Brief histories of VR and AR are given. The human factors of information overload, verbal and non-verbal communications, sight, sound/auditory, gated response, and touch are discussed. Cognitive psychology subjects of sensory memory, iconic memory, echoic memory, split attention effect, automated behaviors, kinesthetics, chunking, and serial position effects are briefly described. VR/AR integration and extensibility show the power of contextualizing information for users. Section Three focuses on CEE delivery and administration. The first chapter in the section discusses the results of a survey of working engineers to determine their CEE practices and preferences. It includes results such as how many courses engineers take each year, what types of courses they take (technical; management; environment, health, and safety; legal; and other), what fraction of the course is mandatory including what fraction is required by the participant's organization and by outside organizations, the fraction of courses taken that are taken for credit, and how many courses are taken after normal working hours. It also presents data on what those same working engineers preferred regarding their CEE. The second chapter provides detailed information on how to conduct effective virtual (distance) training courses including the instructional design and delivery platforms. The third chapter in the section describes combustion CEE training designed for the oil and gas industry. While it is for a specific industry, the general principles apply universally. It also includes some case studies of classes conducted at clients' sites. The fourth chapter discusses the many types of potential CEE providers categorized by internal, external, and hybrid providers. Providers include the engineer's own organization, universities/community colleges, training organizations, vendors, professional societies, trade organizations, government, and consultants. It is recommended that organizations choose the combination of providers that makes the most sense for their particular situation which usually will include a combination of providers. The fifth and last chapter in the section describes how to build a sustainable administrative organization for delivering CEE. It provides cultural implications, organizational design models, the four-phase natural evolution of an organization delivering online CEE, a matrix organizational design model, the new professional working adult learner, and changing demographics. The fourth and last section concerns the future of CEE and includes three chapters. The first chapter describes a sustainable future through the 60-year curriculum model. It discusses the changing postsecondary landscape, the relevance of the model, adapting to the curriculum, the role of CEE in pioneering the 60-year curriculum, and mapping higher education's future in the context of the 60-year curriculum. The second chapter in the section discusses sustainability education and research in action (SERINA), developed by the International Association on Continuing Engineering Education (IACEE). The executive committee used the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a benchmark tool to evaluate SERINA. The purpose of SERINA is to provide practical tools for engineers to help meet the SDGs. The final chapter of the section and of the book suggest some future research areas for CEE. They are broadly categorized under learning preferences, curriculum, VR and AR, and multimedia.

Carmen Boullosa’s Cleopatra Dismounts tells three versions of the life of Cleopatra. In the first sequence, Marc Antony had just disemboweled himself, knowing they had lost the war against Octavian and believing that Cleopatra was dead. Hugging his corpse, Cleopatra castigates Octavian and history for its betrayal of her, recalling variously how she had herself delivered to Caesar in a roll of carpet, and bore his child (Caesarion); the twins and third child she bore to Marc Antony; the bitterness of the recent military defeat. At this point Diomedes, variously described as an informer and her official chronicler, intercedes, admitting that this version of the story is not true to the brilliant, accomplished woman who was the true Cleopatra really was. Telling of how he betrayed Cleopatra, by altering the histories of her reign and allowing Caesar and others to destroy or change her scrolls, he begins again with the story of Cleopatra’s flight from Pompey (the Roman leader who was placed in charge of Cleopatra and her brothers and sisters after Ptolemy Auletes, her father and ruler of Egypt, died). The girl queen (Cleopatra inherited the throne as a teenager) sneaks with several faithful servants out of the palace into a wagon, accompanied by a group of brightly costumed gladiators, on her way to Ascalon. She and her supporters carve the words Queen of Kings” (Cleopatra’s motto in real history) into the boards of the wagon in which she is traveling, and leave it behind when they reach Rome. When they are beset by pirates, Cleopatra stages an elaborate show using some costumes the young gladiator Apollodorus, who has become part of her retinue, helped her buy. She convinces the pirates that she is Isis (a myth which was in reality part of her statecraft). She makes an alliance with them and is taken in peace to Cilicia. The third and longest version of the Cleopatra story is a delightful interlude in which Cleopatra goes live with the Amazons. Cleopatra is at war with the Ruling Council of her husband and brother Ptolemy (she was, historically, forced to marry her brother because she could not rule alone as a woman). The Ruling Council has sent an envoy to summon her to Alexandria to make peace, but when she realizes it is a trap, she flees with her retinue. She arrives in Pelusium, a trade center on the Mediterranean, where many merchants have been stranded by bad weather, and where, as if by magic, she sees a replica of the cart, carved with the words Queen of Kings,” she left behind in Rome. Chased by the reception committee” of the Ruling Council, she escapes on the back of a magical bull. He carries her across the Mediterranean to the land of the Amazons, who take her in. The Amazons welcome her into their society of women, eschewing marriage and traditional female roles to live as warriors and hunters. They sing her the stories of their joining the Amazons and of the many myths that surround them. She meets a group of aged poets, kidnapped by the Amazons to write verses for them, because they love poetry and music. She learns that one Amazon, Orthea, is in love with a god who has the power of extreme heat and cold, and who caused an earthquake that day. The Amazons go to bed, falling into each other’s arms and making love. Though initially disgusted, eventually Cleopatra falls asleep in the protective (and erotic) embrace of Hippolyta, the Amazons’ queen. The next day, the Amazons go to battle a group of rebellious male warriors who charge the Amazons and seek, ultimately, to follow the Sirens. Charging them on their horses, driving cattle at them, the Amazons battle the men. One of their prized poets, however, in an act of suicide, surrenders himself to the Sirens, who devour him before everyone. This breaks the spell and the men cease their clamoring to get to the Sirens. Cleopatra sees Orthea consummating her passion for the god, which kills her. The Cyrene male warriors, who withstood the Sirens’ onslaught in their fort by plugging the windows with rocks and mud, invite Cleopatra and the Amazons to their court to celebrate their successful protection of so many men. Hippolyta declines but sends Cleopatra with her blessing. Once there, she is joyfully reunited with the gladiator Apollodorus and her faithful maidservant and right hand Charmian. The Cyrenes offer to ally with her against her enemies in Ptolemy’s Ruling Council. The alliance between Cleopatra and Caesar (wherein she was smuggled to him rolled up in a carpet, and he assisted her in defeating her enemies in Egypt, part of history) is presaged. At the close of the piece, Cleopatra returns to bid goodbye to the Amazons. She finds them naked, covered in blood, having just sacrificed a horse. Hippolyta is holding the horse’s castrated penis. She repudiates her earlier alliance with the Amazons and returns to Cyrene alone, to her military campaign to become the queen history knows.

When the University of Notre Dame announced that President Barack Obama would speak at its 2009 Commencement and would receive an honorary doctor of laws degree, the reaction was more than anyone expected. Students, faculty, alumni, and friends of Notre Dame denounced the honoring of Obama, who is the most relentlessly pro-abortion public official in the world. Beyond abortion, Obama has taken steps to withdraw from health-care professionals the right of conscientious objection. Among them are thousands of Notre Dame alumni who will be forced to choose between continuing their profession and participating in activities they view as immoral, including the execution of the unborn. And they will be forced to that choice by the politician upon whom their alma mater confers its highest honors. (Mary Ann Glendon, distinguished Harvard law professor and former ambassador to the Vatican, felt obliged to turn down the prestigious Laetare Medal because of this.) Notre Dame’s honoring of Obama is not merely a “Catholic” thing. Many thousands of citizens with no Catholic or Notre Dame connections have protested it. They see it as a capitulation of faith to expedience and the pursuit of vain prestige. Obama’s record and stated purposes are hostile to the most basic truths of faith and the natural law affirmed by the Catholic Church and by many others. Four decades ago, in 1967, the major “Catholic” universities declared their “autonomy” from the Catholic Church in the Land O’Lakes Declaration. The honoring of Obama reflects the replacement by those universities of the benign authority of the Church with the politically correct standards of the secular academic establishment and, especially, of the government. There is a lesson here for all Americans. Notre Dame fell into relativism and expediency because it rejected the Church as the authentic interpreter of the moral law. In this post-Christian era, American culture is following a similar path by reducing morality to the unguided consensus of individual choices. If no code of right and wrong has moral authority – not even the Ten Commandments – then society is ruled by the conflict of interests, and might makes right. The jurisprudence of such relativism is legal positivism in which no law can be criticized as unjust because no one can know what is “just.” What Happened to Notre Dame? by Charles E. Rice, with an Introduction by Alfred Freddoso – two of Notre Dame’s most distinguished scholars, who together have served the University for over 70 years – first recounts the details of Notre Dame’s honoring of President Obama. It then examines the succession of fall-back excuses offered by the Notre Dame President Rev. John I. Jenkins, c.s.c., and University publicists to justify Notre Dame’s defiance of the nation’s bishops and of Catholic teaching. But Rice is not content with mere reportage. What Happened to Notre Dame?diagnoses the problem’s roots by first providing an overview of the Land O’Lakes Declaration, its inception and its aftermath, including the ways in which its false autonomy from the Church has led to an erosion of the Catholic identity of Notre Dame and other Catholic universities. Then, it offers a cure. Christ, who is God, is the author of the divine law and the natural law. The book presents reasons why an acknowledged interpreter of these laws is necessary, and why that interpreter has to be the Pope exercising the Magisterium, or teaching authority of the Church. And it shows why it is so important that we have such a moral interpreter for all citizens and not just for Catholics. The alternative is what Pope Benedict XVI calls the “dictatorship of relativism,” which the book analyzes. Even for those who do not share the Catholic faith, our reason leads us to conclude that the natural law is the only moral code that makes entire sense and points to the conclusion that the Vicar of Christ is uniquely suited to give authoritative interpretation to that law. In the final chapter Rice shows why great good can come out of Notre Dame’s blunder in rendering its highest honors to such an implacable foe. Notre Dame got itself into such a mess because it attempted to be Catholic without the Church and ended up defying the Church and disgracing itself. But good can result from the lesson here that roll-your-own morality is no more tenable than roll-your-own Catholicism. * * * * * Rice shows why what happened to Notre Dame is symptomatic of what’s happening in other Catholic colleges, indeed colleges with non-Catholic religious affiliations. He shows how the abandonment of principle at the college level spills over to the general culture, with devastating effect, as religious standards get pushed out of the public square. And, finally, he shows why people who have never seen the Golden Dome, never rooted for the Fighting Irish, and never graced a Catholic Church, also have a stake in what happened to Notre Dame.
