It begins as the pebble-particles form amid unimaginable violence in distal realms of the Universe, in the Big Bang and in supernova explosions and continues amid the construction of the Solar System. With his pioneering work in social and conceptual history, he contributed significantly to broadening the perspective of West German historical studies after 1945. As a young historian he had worked against National Socialism, which he never commented on publicly after the war. On the basis of a newly opened estate and other sources that have not been taken into account so far, the biography traces the historian's scientific and political metamorphoses between the Third Reich and the Federal Republic.

Die Apostelgeschichte ist die große Erzählung über den Anfang des Christentums. Sie erzählt von dessen Ausbreitung im Mittelmeerraum bis in die Metropole Rom. Die Hauptfiguren dieser Erzählung durchschreiten verschiedene Räume: das religiöse Jerusalem, das römische Philippi, ein mit Philosophen bevölkertes Athen und sogar einen Wintersturm auf dem Mittelmeer. Jan David Basczok nimmt diese Räume als Bühnen in den Blick, auf denen jeweils sehr unterschiedliche Inszenierungen geboten werden. Mit deren Hilfe führt der Lukas genannte Autor die Entstehung des Christentums seinen Lesern bildlich vor Augen. Die intensive Analyse der unterschiedlichen Inszenierungen ermöglicht es, die Gründe für die Abfassung des Textes und seine Wirkung auf zeitgenössische Leser in neuer Weise zu deuten. Wird dagegen eine Verkehrspflicht verletzt, setzt die Verantwortlichkeit direkt bei der Rechtsperson an. Dem stellt sich Jan-Erik Schirmer entschieden entgegen. Er weist nach, wie die herrschende Doktrin zwar den Fortschritt predigt, sich dabei aber auf überkommene Autoritäten stützt und noch immer mit einem Bein im 19. Jahrhundert verharrt. Alternativ entwickelt der Autor im Spannungsfeld von Delikts- und Gesellschaftsrecht das Modell eines einheitlichen Körperschaftsdelikts: § 31 BGB konzentriert die Haftung auf die juristische Person, das Organ haftet nur in Sonderfällen.Diese Arbeit wurde mit dem Promotionspreis 2015 des Fachbereichs Rechtswissenschaft der Freien Universität Berlin ausgezeichnet.
