Rizzoli International Publications Jean-Louis Deniot: Destinations
Emulated as the epitome of French style and honoured by international design magazines and editors, Jean-Louis Deniot is in demand. His legacy is already being compared to that of design greats such as Jacques Grange and Alberto Pinto. Deniot is an architect first, ensuring that the interior architecture of his rooms is harmonious before taking a sophisticated neoclassical approach to the decor. He brings education, logic, and design history to his work, with one eye looking at the most refined style of French eighteenth century and one eye on the sophistication of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. His mix is highly individual, mixing art and custom-made furniture and pieces from different periods with masterful elegance. His rooms always look comfortable and timeless; never overly formal or trendy. In his second book, Deniot highlights his newest work from around the globe, showcasing his urbane and artful interiors from the United States to London, Paris, and Milan, and Moscow, Bangkok and New Delhi. With stunning photography and a series of insightful interviews between the designer and author Pamela Golbin, Destinations highlights a polished and richly layered classical style that is changing the scene for international design and offering inspiration and ideas to decorators, homeowners, and antiques enthusiasts.

Rizzoli International Publications Mark Rothko
Deluxe and comprehensive, this revelatory volume examines the brilliance of Mark Rothko (1903 1970), a pioneer artist of the New York School and major figure in the Abstract Expressionist movement. Illustrated with more than 275 images that explore his paintings, prints, and works on paper, this book highlights the best known and also lesser known works by Rothko from his early figurative and Surrealist works to his mesmerizing colour-field paintings of immense scale, to the more restricted palette of his luminous later works and his final series of black and gray paintings. Among Rothko s artistic philosophies, he held that painting was a deeply psychological and spiritual experience through which basic human emotions could be communicated. Kate Rothko Prizel and Christopher Rothko draw on intimate knowledge of the artworks and the artist s life to give a fuller picture of their father and place him within the context of art history. Rizzoli International Publications Scrawl: An A to Z of Famous Doodles
From the first ever sketch of the Red Cross logo by its founder Clara Barton to a cartoon scrawled on a love letter from Charles Bukowski, the objects in this fascinating collection are a perfect reflection of the eclectic and storied cast of characters from whose archives they ve been collected over the years. Organized alphabetically, with a range of influential names, from William Burroughs to Mark Twain, the book is a voyeur s treasure trove of the ephemeral, in which cultural icons reveal their own preoccupations, passions, plans, and distractions in the marginalia of their daily correspondence. A treat for lovers of the analogue in the digital age, and reproduced beautifully on uncoated paper to come as close as possible to the texture of the originals, Scrawl connects high and low, art and science, history and literature, youth and age, with the universal truth of doodling.

Rizzoli International Publications Peter Doig
In every generation of artists, there are a few who propose a new set of ques- tions and alter the way we understand art. Peter Doig is such an artist. This handsome monograph considers the painter's entire career, beginning with the early work produced in the 1990s when Doig's enigmatic but wholly new conception of painting was first introduced to audiences. Doig was born to Scottish parents, spent several years as a child in Trinidad, later settling in Canada for his formative early teen years. He found his voice while at art school in London, albeit one that was out of step with the work of the time (much of it installation-based and dripping with neo-conceptualist leanings). He had developed a small following of fellow artists and critics when the rest of the art world caught up and took notice. In 2002, he left London for Trinidad, where he has remained. The small Caribbean island-with its own distinctive light and landscape-has deeply influenced his recent work. This volume was designed in close collaboration with the artist, with a cover and various interior elements created especially by the artist.

Rizzoli International Publications Polar Tales: Future of Ice, Life, and the Arctic, The
The Arctic is the ground zero of climate change, and the polar bear is on the front line. Filled with groundbreaking photography that reveals the breathtaking landscapes of the Arctic and the transformations of the environment through the changing lives of polar bears, it's a firsthand report from the top of our planet. Polar Tales tells the story of an ice world in transformation and a planet nearing its tipping point--the moment when Earth's climate begins to change irreversibly. This book is both a celebration of the wildlife that inhabits this most unforgiving and beautiful environment imaginable--mountains, fjords, enormous glaciers, and the seemingly endless pack ice of the Arctic Ocean--and a cautionary tale of global warming. Rising temperatures have put the Arctic at risk, and the habitats--and lives--of the animals there are increasingly threatened. Set against the dramatic landscape of ice floes and ragged mountains, readers see how polar bears, foxes, seals, walruses, and reindeer now struggle to live in this vulnerable climate. Images of a polar bear mother as she takes her newborns out for their first hunt, a seal pup only hours old, and the spectacle of the polar night are reminders of what is at risk. The authors work like no other photographers: spending months in the field on their expeditions, they live among the polar bears, establishing an uneasy balance and unprecedented access to the world of the kings of the Arctic. Readers are rewarded with unique and stirring images that capture the harsh beauty of a world that few will experience firsthand.

Rizzoli International Publications Painting California: Seascapes and Beach Towns
This volume showcases 200 works by California Art Club artists who have focused on the evocative seascapes, charming seaside towns, and beach communities from San Diego to San Francisco, demonstrating a breathtaking range of natural settings suffused with atmosphere, drama, and light. Since the dawn of the twentieth century, California has been home to artists from all over America and Europe who aspired to depict the state s compelling natural landscapes on canvas. In 1909, these artists founded the California Art Club, which stands today as one of the most esteemed painting societies in the United States. This volume, which follows Skira Rizzoli s luminous California Light: A Century of Landscapes, presents more of the club s distinctive and lush plein air painting, an impressionistic style in which painters work outdoors in order to capture the ephemeral moment when the natural lighting of a landscape elevates an already beautiful scene into something sublime. As observed by W.H. Auden, Thousands have lived without love, not one without water. We as a species are drawn to the sea artists perhaps even more so than others, as beautifully evidenced in this book.

Rizzoli International Publications Yukio Mishima: The Death of a Man: The Death of a Man
The author of masterworks such as The Temple of the Golden Pavilion and Forbidden Colors, Mishima, a celebrated figure in postwar world literature, remains a controversial figure in Japan. His reactionary politics and the spectacular nature of his death had so profoundly impacted Japanese society that images associated with the event were never publicly shown. In the months prior to the November incident, he enlisted Kishin Shinoyama to create a photographic, radical work of fiction, a photo essay on the death of the Japanese everyman. In images often suffused with militarism and eroticism, a parade of men, including a sailor, a construction worker, a fisherman, and a soldier, are shown meeting grisly, dramatic ends. Published for the very first time, these stylized images of men dying alone serve as prologues to the real-world culmination of Mishima s pursuit of total art. Locked in a performance with one inescapable end, Mishima offered his own body as its final act.
