De Gruyter RESET THE APPARATUS!: A Survey of the Photographic and the Filmic in Contemporary Art
The book illustrates that supposedly outmoded, analog practices in contemporary photographic and cinematic art not only have maximum actuality, but also critical potential. Using the example of artists’ practices that are motivated by the idea of the photographic and/or the cinematic but do not necessarily lead to photographs or films, the book shows how, in multiple ways, the display tool—the apparatus—can be explored, taken apart, reflected, modified, and newly arranged. The contributions that have also emerged from cooperative efforts between artists and scientists focus on the required technical/material processes and demonstrate that knowledge of medial difference is also socio-politically relevant.

Emerald Publishing Limited Everyday Life in the Segmented City
This volume of "Research in Urban Sociology" is composed of a selection of the papers presented at the conference "Everyday Life in the Segmented City" held in July 2010, Florence. The conference gathered a multiplicity of approaches and points of view dealing with issues of global urbanization. Urbanization is a phenomenon inscribed into the globalization process that has enormous consequences in the transformation of urban space and the everyday life of citizens, and is reflected also in the flourishing of an analytical discourse increasingly transcending the boundaries of established urban disciplines. The progressive extension of the urban domain beyond the limits of the city and across diverse scales has its corollary in the progressive segmentation of the urban dimension along multiple lines of physical, social, economic, cultural and ethnic nature. This volume focuses on the perspective of the everyday to analyze how practices and policy can overcome the spin towards fragmentation and anomie, and reinforce social cohesion for a more just and livable city, endorsing the "right to the city" as presented by the seminal work of Henri Lefebvre.

Park Books Shifting Patterns: Christopher Alexander and the Eishin Campus
Christopher Alexander is a Vienna-born, British-American architect and theorist and the father of the pattern language movement, popularised in his pivotal 1968 book, A Pattern Language, with Sara Ishikawa and Murray Silverstein, as well as the 1979 follow-up, The Timeless Way of Building. Lesser known but as essential to understanding Alexander's work is his theory of 'systems generating systems' which explains that systems as a whole are created by 'generating systems', and, if we wish to make things which function as 'wholes', we shall have to invent generating systems to create them. Taking the Eishin Campus outside Tokyo, built between 1983 and 1989, as its example, Shifting Patterns is the first book to examine Alexander's theory of 'systems generating systems' and its application to a building design. It brings together essays from an interdisciplinary, international cast of experts, including Eva Guttmann, Gabriele Kaiser, Ernst Beneder, Walter Ruprechter, Hisae Hosoi, Christian Kuhn, Ida Pristinger, and Norihito Nakatani, as well as conversations with Hajo Neis and Takaharu Tezuka to investigate the application of this theory to the school and university complex, the largest project Alexander has realised based on pattern language. Among the issues discussed are topicality, interdisciplinary and internationality, and culture transfer. The essays also look at the design-build movement as an antithesis to today's standardised and commerce-driven architectural production.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Occupational Stress: Risk Factors, Prevention and Management Strategies
Stress related work, although always present, is considered one of the new risks for occupational medicine. This is largely due to a general change in the organization of work, inevitable in a constantly evolving market. It is also due to the presence of objective and subjective indicators that allow a satisfactory, though very complex, risk assessment. Related work stress generates repercussions on the company at every level, with a reduction in productivity, a reduction in the corporate image, a reduction in the quality of service, an increase in absenteeism and the dissatisfaction of workers. Some of these aspects are often submerged and difficult to identify. Related work stress also generate significant costs, both direct and indirect, for companies. A budgeted economic investment will be useful for forward-looking companies, especially for large companies. This book, written by authors from all over the world, will analyze some aspects of this increasingly relevant subject.

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Italian Studies on Food and Quality of Life
The book explores, through a reflection on food, the complexity of the concept of well-being. It starts from the consideration that food is a fundamental element for human well-being, and for well-being of the planet as a whole. Not only does food guarantee the survival of human beings, it is also a cultural expression. With regard to the Italian socio-cultural context, the contributors explore how food relates to aspects such as history, tradition, new food styles, health, and the old and new technologies used to produce food. The studies in the book do not simply analyse indicators to illustrate the Italian situation in the "here and now". As part of the tradition of studies on social indicators, they provide valid and well-founded indications to contribute to an improvement in the quality of life for years to come. This work on the theme of food represents a very useful contribution to the general reflection on well-being and its statistical, sociological, and multidisciplinary study, due to the importance historically given to food in Italy and the socio-cultural implications of food in various life contexts.

CABI Publishing Endophyte Biotechnology: Potential for Agriculture and Pharmacology
Endophytes are bacterial and fungal microorganisms that colonize plants without usually eliciting visible disease symptoms but establishing intricate and mutually beneficial interactions with their host plant. This can lead to an increase in plant vigour, growth, development, and changes in plant metabolism. Endophytes may assist in the development of more productive and sustainable agricultural practices or discoveries of novel pharmacologicals. These elusive organisms are often overlooked and their benefits underrated. Endophytes can support plants in a variety of ways to cope with biotic and abiotic stress factors, such as drought, heat, pest and diseases. They can produce particular metabolites, facilitate access to nutrients, change the plant's chemistry, physiology and responses, or by a combination of these factors. The biosynthetic pathways present in endophytes alone or in combinations with the plant's, can lead to novel chemicals, with yet undiscovered pharmacological characteristics. With state-of-the-art knowledge on their discovery and roles, this book describes the diversity of endophytes, their value, exploitation and future challenges. Key features: Provides an overview of the endophytes that are encountered in nature. Demonstrates the beneficial effects of endophytes together with their practical applications in agriculture. Explores how endophytes are valuable candidates for research on future drugs and biopesticides. This title is a valuable resource for students and researchers in plant science and plant pathology as well as those working in the pharmaceutical and pesticide industries.

Bristol University Press Challenging the Myth of Gender Equality in Sweden
This is the first book to explode the myth of Swedish gender equality, offering both a new perspective for an international audience, and suggesting how equality might be re-thought generally. The authors argue that whilst gender equality in Sweden has led to a society with increased opportunities for some, it has also become nationalistic and builds upon heteronormative and racial principles.

Whittles Publishing Reviving Palmyra in Multiple Dimensions: Images, Ruins and Cultural Memory
This book provides a visual reconstruction of Palmyra, a World Heritage Site situated in Syria, which flourished in Greco-Roman times. Palmyra is situated in a desert oasis and served as a vibrant caravan station on the Silk Road connecting the Roman world with the East. It has been called 'the Queen of the Desert' and 'Venice of the Sands'.In 2015-2017 the city was conquered by ISIS who destroyed its monuments and museum, also killing several of its inhabitants. Their aim was to erase the memory and identity of the place, its people and our common heritage. However, through the use of modern technology including photogrammetry, digital imagery and 3D modelling, it has been possible to recreate the documented monuments, thus overcoming to some extent the trauma, cultural destruction and loss. The book unveils the rediscovery of the site by the West and revives and reconstructs the ancient city through images and history. The reader is taken through the spectacular city and its past by providing the information to follow the roots and development of the site, its monuments and its people through the ages, including rulers such as Queen Zenobia. The combination of visualization and written accounts interlink the environment and its people, the monuments and archaeological small finds by using ancient written sources, old photographs, new imagery, 3D models and 3D printing. Thus this ancient site and its past is revived in multiple dimensions. Monuments are visualized as digitally reconstructed ruins or as complete virtual models. This text is therefore the perfect guide for readers who wish to immerse themselves visually in the history of the area and to discover more about the archaeology and its preservation using diverse methods employing modern technology.

Plural Publishing Inc Manual of Allergy and Clinical Immunology for Otolaryngologists
Manual of Allergy and Clinical Immunology for Otolaryngologists presents the most up-to-date knowledge related to allergy and immunology directed towards the unique needs of otolaryngologists. Many of the clinical conditions treated by otolaryngologists have an allergic or immunologic pathogenesis, including sinusitis, rhinitis and otitis, and otolaryngologists are often required to use allergic methodology in treating these problems. This book is a resource to which physicians can refer to help them manage allergic aspects of common ENT problems and their diagnosis and management. The book begins with an introduction to the fundamental immunologic processes necessary to understand allergic mechanism and diseases and goes on to include food and drug allergies, anaphalaxsis, immune deficiencies, occupational allergic diseases, and tumor immunology, among other topics. Otolaryngologists across all specialties as well as residents will benefit from the current information that focuses on the most important aspects of each topic in a concise, easy to reference format. **From the Foreword: "The fields of allergy, immunology, and otolaryngology are inextricably linked.Immunologic dysregulation is recognized to be the underpinning of a wide variety of diseases of the head and neck, and on a daily basis the practicing otolaryngologist must draw upon principles of allergy and immunology in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. For example, it is a rare patient presenting with a sinonasal complaint in whom consideration of allergic etiologies is not relevant. The otolaryngologist must also have a strong understanding of autoimmune illnesses to recognize the unique array of potential head and neck manifestations associated with autoimmune disease. Equally important, a deeper understanding of immunopathology may be the key to unlocking the mechanisms of major diseases ranging from chronic rhinosinusitis to head and neck cancer. Thus it is imperative for the otolaryngologist to master principles of allergy and immunology in order to provide optimal patient care. The body of knowledge encompassed by allergy and immunology is rapidly evolving and expanding, posing a great challenge for otolaryngologists seeking to keep up with diagnostic and treatment advances in the field. This splendid textbook offers a comprehensive, multidisciplinary encapsulation of contemporary allergy and immunology for the otolaryngologist. Drs. Rosenstreich, Fried, de Vos and Jackman have assembled an illustrious group of authors who have managed to distill the essentials of allergy and immunology for the otolaryngologist without sacrificing scientific content or detail. The reader will appreciate clear elucidation of basic science concepts and the practical translation of basic science principles to the clinical management of otolaryngologic illnesses. Diagnostic and treatment guidelines are presented with a comprehensive and pragmatic approach. This book is essential reading for all otolaryngologists, from trainees looking to grasp the breadth of overlap between otolaryngology and allergy/immunology, to seasoned otolaryngologists seeking to update their fund of knowledge with the latest developments in immunophysiology and clinical treatment. The knowledge gained from this expertly edited volume will benefit our patients tremendously." --Peter H.Hwang, MD, Professor and Chief, Division of Rhinology and Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery, Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, Stanford University School of Medicine

John Wiley & Sons Inc Subduction Dynamics: From Mantle Flow to Mega Disasters
Subduction dynamics has been actively studied through seismology, mineral physics, and laboratory and numerical experiments. Understanding the dynamics of the subducting slab is critical to a better understanding of the primary societally relevant natural hazards emerging from our planetary interior, the megathrust earthquakes and consequent tsunamis. Subduction Dynamics is the result of a meeting that was held between August 19 and 22, 2012 on Jeju island, South Korea, where about fifty researchers from East Asia, North America and Europe met. Chapters treat diverse topics ranging from the response of the ionosphere to earthquake and tsunamis, to the origin of mid-continental volcanism thousands kilometers distant from the subduction zone, from the mysterious deep earthquakes triggered in the interior of the descending slabs, to the detailed pattern of accretionary wedges in convergent zones, from the induced mantle flow in the deep mantle, to the nature of the paradigms of earthquake occurrence, showing that all of them ultimately are due to the subduction process. Volume highlights include: Multidisciplinary research involving geology, mineral physics, geophysics and geodynamics Extremely large-scale numerical models with sliate-of-the art high performance computing facilities Overview of exceptional three-dimensional dynamic representation of the evolution of the Earth interiors and of the earthquake and subsequent tsunami dynamics Global risk assessment strategies in predicting natural disasters This volume is a valuable contribution in earth and environmental sciences that will assist with understanding the mechanisms behind plate tectonics and predicting and mitigating future natural hazards like earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis.

Aperture August Sander: People of the 20th Century: A Cultural Work in Photographs
A landmark in the history of modern art, People of the 20th Century presents the fullest expression of the German photographer August Sander’s lifelong work: a monumental endeavor to amass an archive of twentieth-century humanity through a cross section of German culture. Sander photographed subjects from all walks of life, capturing bankers and boxers, soldiers and circus performers, farmers and families, to create a catalog of the German people, arranged by their profession, gender, and social status. First imagined in the 1920s, he pursued the project for more than fifty years during a politically charged and rapidly changing time, fraught by two world wars and the devastating repercussions of Nazism. Sander never finished the seven-volume, forty-nine portfolio magnum opus, continually refining and shaping it to convey an understanding of the world in which he lived. The photographs, remarkable for their unflinching realism and deft analysis of character, provide a powerful social mirror of Germany between the wars and form one of the most influential achievements of the twentieth century. Now made available again, People of the 20th Century brings together the exquisite reproductions and principal texts of the long out-of-print, seven-volume edition, as well as the main scholarship from the accompanying study edition. This all-in-one edition, with 619 photographs, offers the most comprehensive iteration of Sander’s still-essential vision.
