Siglo XVI. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Tempest V vs Fw 190D-9: 1944–45
Arguably two of the finest piston-engined fighters ever built, the Tempest V and Fw 190D-9 raised the bar in terms of aircraft design and operational capability during World War II. The long-nosed ‘Dora 9’, designed by Kurt Tank, first appeared in the skies over the Western and Eastern Fronts in the late summer of 1944. Fast, and with an exceptional rate of climb, it quickly bettered almost every fighter that the RAF, USAAF and Soviet Red Air Force could field. The Hawker Tempest V entered service in early 1944, initially proving itself a stalwart performer when it was deployed to intercept V1 flying bombs over southern England. From the autumn of 1944, the Tempest V also equipped squadrons of the 2nd Tactical Air Force, operating in support of the Allied armies advancing across north-west Europe. It became a potent ground-attack aircraft, armed with underwing rockets, but also a first-class interceptor when pitted against the Luftwaffe’s advanced Fw 190D-9 and Me 262. Featuring full colour artwork, this book describes in fascinating detail combats between the Tempest Vs of No 274 Sqn and the Fw 190D-9s of I. and III./JG 26 between February and April 1945.

Manchester University Press Pyostryye Skazki: By V. F. Odoyevsky
Odoyevsky’s cycle of short stories, Pyostryye skazki (1833), is a transitional work between his writings of the 1820s (in particular his contributions to Mnemozina, 1824–5) and his mature period which culminated in Russkiye nochi (1844). Pyostryye skazki thus represents a romantic amalgam of elements drawn from fairy-tale and folklore, the fantastic and the society tale, serving didactic, satirical and whimsical purposes. The narration supposedly comes from an authorial alter ego, one Iriney Modestovich Gomozeyko, who occupies a place in Russian literature of the 1830s alongside Pushkin’s Ivan Petrovich Belkin and Gogol’s Rudyy Pan’ko. While individual stories from the cycle reappeared during the Soviet revival of interest in Odoyevsky, this edition, which includes an introduction, notes and a short bibliography, was the first integral (re)publication since 1833 of one of the basic texts of Russian Romanticism.

American Mathematical Society Research in Collegiate Mathematics Education V
This fifth volume of ""Research in Collegiate Mathematics Education"" (RCME) presents state-of-the-art research on understanding, teaching, and learning mathematics at the post-secondary level. The articles in RCME are peer-reviewed for two major features: advancing our understanding of collegiate mathematics education, and readability by a wide audience of practicing mathematicians interested in issues affecting their own students. This is not a collection of scholarly arcana, but a compilation of useful and informative research regarding the ways our students think about and learn mathematics. The volume begins with a study from Mexico of the cross-cutting concept of variable followed by two studies dealing with aspects of calculus reform. The next study frames its discussion of students' conceptions of infinite sets using the psychological work of Efraim Fischbein on (mathematical) intuition. This is followed by two papers concerned with APOS theory and other frameworks regarding mathematical understanding. The final study provides some preliminary results on student learning using technology when lessons are delivered via the Internet. Whether specialists in education or mathematicians interested in finding out about the field, readers will obtain new insights about teaching and learning and will take away ideas they can use.

Ernest Press The Alpine Journal: 2007: v. 112
This is the mountaineering yearbook, including feature articles, expedition reports, book reviews, obituaries, arts, history and science.Richly illustrated, the "Alpine Journal" is the world's principal mountaineering yearbook and essential reading for all who love the mountains, particularly those who climb and explore in the Greater Ranges and the Alps. This 2007 edition marks the 150th anniversary of the world famous club. One hundred and fifty years ago, the Alpine Club was born. It was the first mountaineering club in the world and as this 112th volume of the "Alpine Journal" amply demonstrates, it is still going strong.AC members have been climbing across the globe - Simon Yates and Andy Parkin in Tierra del Fuego, Phil Wickens leading an AC expedition in the Pamirs, Malcolm Bass rounding off the club's extended courtship of Haizi Shan in Sichuan, Paul Knott, making the first ascent of South Walsh, highest unclimbed peak in North America. All these stories are told, plus among others, Ian Parnell's eight-day ascent of Kedar Dome's east face, and a year in the life of vagabond climber Nick Bullock. The AC's 150th anniversary is also an occasion for some critical reflection. Doug Scott and Ed Douglas weigh in on ethics and money, Peter Gillman looks at scandals that have soured climbing, and award-winning author Robert Macfarlane considers our ambivalent response to 'the wild'.Ken Wilson, controversialist sans pareil, provides a talking point with a table of the stand-out climbs on the highest peaks and as a glorious reminder of 150 years of British mountaineering's finest moments, we feature the words and images of Gordon Stainforth's acclaimed 'The Crux' exhibition. This is a record of notable climbs, region-by-region, over the past year, reviews, paintings and cartoons by Andy Parkin, 150 photographs, nearly all in colour, and maps.

Recording 'mountain adventure' is the primary raison d'etre of the "Alpine Journal" and this 113th volume has it in abundance. A bolt of lightening stuns climbers on a new route in the Cordillera Huayhuash; Kenton Kool and Nick Bullock struggle on the icy north face of Kalanka; Mike Cocker and friends end a spot of exploration in the Cordillera Carabaya besieged in their hotel as troops put down a riot; and in Kygyzstan, Dave Pickford dices with Aku Su granite and aggressive officialdom.Mick Fowler opens a special section on 'Pure Alpinism' with an account of his and Paul Ramsden's first ascent of Manamcho, Tibet, and Russian Valery Babanov contributes a vivid essay describing the stand-out climb of 2007 - his six-day, alpine-style ascent of the west pillar of Jannu.Artist/alpinist Andy Parkin takes pastels and piolet in search of challenges in Nepal. Rowan Huntley's fine work appears throughout this AJ and Julian Cooper tells of the 'painter's khora' that resulted in his acclaimed series of canvases on Mount Kailas. With more illustrations than ever before, this journal also recalls the gatherings and expeditions that marked the AC's 150th anniversary, recalls the extraordinary life of Sir Edmund Hillary, and takes a careful look at the effects on the mountain environment of retreating glaciers and visitor pressures.

Amberley Publishing The Harrier: The World's First V/STOL Fighter
The iconic Hawker-Siddeley Harrier was designed to fight the Cold War from the fields of West Germany but won its battle spurs in the Falklands, Belize and Afghanistan. It was controversially scrapped by the British Government fifty years after entering service with the RAF and its loss raised serious questions over Royal Navy fleet protection. This book not only describes the aircraft and its operations but includes quotes from the pilots who flew and fought in it. Author David Oliver describes the development and production of the Harrier from the original Kestrel project, which was the only successful attempt at a vertical take-off and landing aircraft at the time. He follows the Harrier into service with the RAF and also covers the development of the Sea Harrier, with its special characteristics and its extraordinarily successful performance in the Falklands War where its unique engine made it an agile fighter. He also describes the use of the Harrier in other deployments such as Belize and Afghanistan, covers Anglo-US developments and examines the legacy of the Harrier in the shape of the F-35B Lightning II multi-role fighter.

Biteback Publishing Edwina Currie Diaries: v. 2: 1992-1997
Love her or hate her Edwina Currie falls comfortably into that category of celebrity you simply cannot ignore. The first edition of her diaries explosively revealed her affair with former Prime Minister John Major. This second volume, which begins in 1992 with her refusal to serve in Major's Cabinet, is no less revelatory about her colleagues, encounters with others in the public eye, and, of course, her extraordinary love life. It covers her life in Parliament up to the election of Blair's Labour government, but more importantly sees its subject's emergence as a mainstay in the public imagination, first as a bestselling author, then as a commentator, broadcaster, presenter and performer - most recently on the BBC's flagship entertainment show Strictly Come Dancing. Shot through with her trademark effervescence and sense of fun, Edwina Currie Diaries: Volume II documents one of the biggest characters in British public life at her saucy, scathing best. 'Frank and funny, you can't put her down' Time Out 'Few women can lay claim to the word "magnificent", but Currie is now surely one of them' Daily Telegraph

Harvard University Press Regional Advantage: Culture and Competition in Silicon Valley and Route 128, With a New Preface by the Author
Why is it that in the ’90s, business in California’s Silicon Valley flourished, while along Route 128 in Massachusetts it declined? The answer, Annalee Saxenian suggests, has to do with the fact that despite similar histories and technologies, Silicon Valley developed a decentralized but cooperative industrial system while Route 128 came to be dominated by independent, self-sufficient corporations. The result of more than one hundred interviews, this compelling analysis highlights the importance of local sources of competitive advantage in a volatile world economy.

Taylor & Francis Ltd Legal Theory and the Humanities: Volume V
The papers selected for this volume offer a panorama of problems and methods at the intersection of legal theory and the humanities. All taken from the last three decades, the papers discuss issues such as the role of the emotions and the imagination in legal reasoning, and the protection of the diversity of voices and perspective in the name of community. Unduly neglected sources and resources for legal theory are also explored: images, still and moving; performance, aural and gestural; and space, old and new, from the Inns of Court to the World Wide Web. The articles balance renewed calls to humanise legal theory with those that analyse and explore the relevance of specific domains of the humanities - such as literature, architecture, music, painting, drawing and film - for law. The volume contains a substantive introduction and a detailed bibliography.
