St Augustine's Press Apocalypse Of Being
Heidegger intended to replace metaphysics by a new kind of thought about that which he called 'Sein', but in his works this noun is very far from meaning the act of being such as it has been traditionally conceived by Western philosophy. His explanations as to what he does mean by 'Sein' underline his departure from traditional metaphysics. 'Sein' is no longer to be understood as the act of the things that exist in the eternal world, but as something revealed to the human mind in an esoteric way. The association of this esoteric revelation of 'Sein' With Holderlin's theosophy led Heidegger to put forward a new gnosis organized as a substitute of metaphysics and of Christian theology as well.

Cornell University Press The Eccentric Realist: Henry Kissinger and the Shaping of American Foreign Policy
During the 2008 election season, the Democratic and Republican presidential candidates both aspired to be understood as foreign policy "realists" in the mold of Henry Kissinger. Kissinger, who is distrusted on the neoconservative right for his skepticism about American exceptionalism and on the liberal left for his amoral, realpolitik approach, once again stood as the sage of foreign relations and the wise man who rises above partisan politics. In The Eccentric Realist, Mario Del Pero questions this depiction of Kissinger. Lauded as the foreign policy realist par excellence, Kissinger, as Del Pero shows, has been far more ideological and inconsistent in his policy formulations than is commonly realized.Del Pero considers the rise and fall of Kissinger's foreign policy doctrine over the course of the 1970s—beginning with his role as National Security Advisor to Nixon and ending with the collapse of détente with the Soviet Union after Kissinger left the scene as Ford's outgoing Secretary of State. Del Pero shows that realism then (not unlike realism now) was as much a response to domestic politics as it was a cold, hard assessment of the facts of international relations. In the early 1970s, Americans were weary of ideological forays abroad; Kissinger provided them with a doctrine that translated that political weariness into foreign policy. Del Pero argues that Kissinger was keenly aware that realism could win elections and generate consensus. Moreover, over the course of the 1970s it became clear that realism, as practiced by Kissinger, was as rigid as the neoconservativism that came to replace it.In the end, the failure of the détente forged by the realists was not the defeat of cool reason at the hands of ideologically motivated and politically savvy neoconservatives. Rather, the force of American exceptionalism, the touchstone of the neocons, overcame Kissinger's political skills and ideological commitments. The fate of realism in the 1970s raises interesting questions regarding its prospects in the early years of the twenty-first century.

Prometheus Books Philosophical Dictionary
This lexicon of modern Western philosophical concepts, problems, principles, and theories may well be the shortest dictionary of philosophy in the English language, but one of the most useful. Organized by internationally recognized philosopher Mario Bunge, this indispensable volume, directed to general and university audiences, elucidates and evaluates many contemporary philosophical ideas from a humanist and scientifically oriented perspective. From A to Z, most entries are brief and nontechnical in nature, highlighting useful philosophical terms rather than trendy ones. Placing emphasis on "living" philosophy, Bunge has deliberately excluded many of the archaic terms and philosophical curios of other dictionaries. He has incorporated a number of "minipapers," or longer definitions of some terms, and he critically analyzes such influential doctrines as existentialism, phenomenology, idealism, materialism, pragmatism, deontological ethics, utilitarianism, and many others. Constructive alternatives are offered to all philosophical approaches criticized. This is a superb reference work for both students and professional philosophers.

University of California Press Qualitative Literacy: A Guide to Evaluating Ethnographic and Interview Research
Suppose you were given two qualitative studies: one is a piece of empirically sound social science and the other, though interesting and beautifully written, is not. How would you tell the difference? Qualitative Literacy presents criteria to assess qualitative research methods such as in-depth interviewing and participant observation. Qualitative research is indispensable to the study of inequality, poverty, education, public health, immigration, the family, and criminal justice. Each of the hundreds of ethnographic and interview studies published yearly on these issues is scientifically either sound or unsound. This guide provides social scientists, researchers, students, evaluators, policy makers, and journalists with the tools needed to identify and evaluate quality in field research.

And so begins the humorous account of Andrade's steamboat adventure into one of the most dangerous and breathtakingly beautiful corners of the world.Rife with shrewd observations and sparkling wit, his sarcastic, down-to-earth diary entries not only offer comedic and awe-inspiring details of life and the landscape but also trace his internal metamorphosis: his travels challenge what he thought he knew about the Amazon, and drastically alter his understanding of his motherland.

Bloodaxe Books Ltd Beloved: 81 poems from Hafez
Hafez is among the most celebrated of Persian mystic poets, thriving alongside such towering figures as Rumi and Saadi. Ubiquitous in Iran, he has also been hugely influential in the West. Interpreted variously as ardent mystic and lover, he fuses earthly and divine love with an intense constancy as momentously productive as Dante's courtly adoration for Beatrice. Across intimidating obstacles of time and culture, Beloved delivers an accessible yet authentic modern rendering of the Persian originals. Few translations of Hafez have matched his beauty, musicality and rich complexity. Combining vigour with ingenuity, Mario Petrucci reanimates for the English reader all of the moral clarity and sensual abundance of a spiritual and literary master. 'Petrucci's adaptations are a delight to read. They are fresh, candid, subtly humorous, and elegant. They have that audacious and multilayered richness one finds in the originals. Above all, they are uncompromising.' – Fatemeh Keshavarz, Director and Chair, Roshan Institute for Persian Studies, University of Maryland 'Mario Petrucci's new versions of Hafez are nuanced and thoughtful, embracing both the depth and the beauty of the original.' – Sasha Dugdale, Editor, Modern Poetry in Translation ‘Petrucci bases his engagement with Hafez on a special awareness... Everywhere, his delicate but probing selection of word and phrase uplifts and inspires.' – Michael Hakuzan Wenninger, Zen monk

John Wiley & Sons Inc Bipolar Disorder: Clinical and Neurobiological Foundations
Bipolar Disorder Bipolar disorder is the most complex psychiatric disorder with different types of mood episodes, subtypes, varied course, and significant comorbidity. Not surprisingly, this complexity poses unique challenges to clinicians for optimal management of those with bipolar disorder. There has been an explosion of research into the causes and treatment of this condition over the past two decades. It is a daunting task for a practising clinician to make sense of this research and to remain up to date with progress in the understanding of the neurobiology and treatment of bipolar disorder. This book synthesizes and translates the vast array of research knowledge into information that is both relevant and meaningful for a clinician. The book provides a comprehensive, yet focused, reference work on bipolar disorder for both trainees and practising psychiatrists. The two editors are leaders in the field who have published extensively on bipolar disorder. They have assembled a team of experts from around the world: in many instances, chapters are co-authored by people from different continents, bringing a truly international perspective to this important topic. The book covers the basic science of the pathology underlying bipolar disorder but addresses the clinical aspects of the disease throughout. The book comprises four sections: Descriptive Aspects–issues ranging from how the concept of bipolar disorder has evolved over the years to new information about neurocognitive impairment, creativity and economic productivity, and to discussion of the deliberations of the DSM-V committee on changes in diagnostic categories and criteria. Biological Aspects–the contribution of genes to this disorder, changes in circadian rhythms, what we know about brain changes and the role of oxidative stress. Management–all the latest information about pharmacological and other somatic treatments plus psychological therapies for the optimal management of this condition. Special Populations–detailed descriptions of bipolar disorder in women, children and the elderly. If you want to provide state-of-the-art care to your bipolar patients, be sure to consult this authoritative reference.

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd The Market Way to Riches: Behind the Myth
Mario Amendola and Jean-Luc Gaffard argue that all too often, markets and technology are treated as two magic words that will open the door to a wealth of riches. An increasing number of governments appear to be aiming for a pure market economy in order to reap the benefits of a benevolent technology that promises the most spectacular advances. Both markets and technology can certainly be considered essential economic factors, but which market and what technology? Is the current prevailing view of competition without restraints and privatisation at all costs actually the essence of the market? This book maintains that the dominant view mistakes the relationship between growth and technical change and, as a consequence, the role of the market in this context. The authors argue that once the issue is analysed in the proper light, the usual ingredients of the dominant policy recipe - zero inflation, balanced budgets, privatisations, deregulation of all markets, extreme flexibility - may not actually be the appropriate ones. The Market Way to Riches will appeal to academics from many branches of economics including heterodox, evolutionary and macroeconomics and those with an interest in economic growth generally. Policy makers influencing economic growth will also find much to engage them.

This timely book examines the ever-increasing prevalence of Central Purchasing Bodies (CPBs), analysing their use and structure across different EU Member States. Through comprehensive comparative analysis, this book investigates competition law and SMEs, economic and management perspectives, and centralised public purchasing during the COVID-19 pandemic within the sphere of CPBs and joint procurement. Chapters explore the use of procurement techniques and electronic instruments by CPBs and the liability and remedies perspectives of CPBs and their users.Providing a complete overview of CPBs structure in different Member States and the aspects of joint procurements, Centralising Public Procurement will be of interest to students and scholars of European and commercial law. It also offers important insights for CPBs themselves, practitioners and policy-makers, as well as contracting authorities using CPBs in the different Member States.

Rizzoli International Publications Worlds of Wonder: Richard Hallberg Interiors
The first book from Los Angeles based interior designer Richard Hallberg charts an evocative body of work that spans seaside, mountaintop, country, and urban locales and celebrates the sensual, boundary-defying aesthetic of a true original. In spaces that forgo easy categorization of traditional or contemporary, Hallberg uses art and objects from every genre and era eighteenth-century gilt consoles, African baskets, selenite-slab tables in a seductive interpretation of modernity that embodies the multifaceted, multicultural way we live today. Wrought by a native Californian with the heart of a classicist, these rooms reserve space for sunlight, foliage, and the sound of trickling water, which make the exalted approachable and revere the perfectly imperfect. Hallberg incorporates the finest natural and artisanal materials reclaimed wood, hand-troweled plaster, marble, limestone, crip linen, and sumptuous wool but understands that the greatest luxury of all is comfort. This volume chronicles the instinctual process of a designer who eschews hard-and-fast rules for the wonder of breaking them, who leaves no stone unturned in his uncompromising search for beauty, and whose lifelong pursuit of the magical, ineffable, and gorgeous has yielded an incomparable oeuvre.
