The monograph, as its first main goal, aims to study the overconvergence phenomenon of important classes of Bernstein-type operators of one or several complex variables, that is, to extend their quantitative convergence properties to larger sets in the complex plane rather than the real intervals. The operators studied are of the following types: Bernstein, Bernstein—Faber, Bernstein-Butzer, q-Bernstein, Bernstein-Stancu, Bernstein-Kantorovich, Favard-Szász-Mirakjan, Baskakov and Balázs-Szabados.The second main objective is to provide a study of the approximation and geometric properties of several types of complex convolutions: the de la Vallée Poussin, Fejér, Riesz-Zygmund, Jackson, Rogosinski, Picard, Poisson-Cauchy, Gauss-Weierstrass, q-Picard, q-Gauss-Weierstrass, Post-Widder, rotation-invariant, Sikkema and nonlinear. Several applications to partial differential equations (PDEs) are also presented.Many of the open problems encountered in the studies are proposed at the end of each chapter. For further research, the monograph suggests and advocates similar studies for other complex Bernstein-type operators, and for other linear and nonlinear convolutions.

In a 1965 letter to 'Newsweek', French writer and academic Bernard Fall (1926-67) staked a claim as the 'Number One Realist' on the Vietnam War. This is the first book to study the thought of this overlooked figure, one of the most important experts on counterinsurgency warfare in Indochina. Nathaniel L. Art Deco cinemas showed the latest Hollywood flicks, while dancehall owners and jazz musicians turned Shanghai into Asia’s top nightlife destination. Yet from the night of their wedding, Bernardine’s new husband did not live up to his promises. Instead of feeling sorry for herself or leaving Shanghai, Bernardine decided to make a place for herself. Like other Jewish women before her, she started a salon in her home, drawing famous names from the world of politics, the arts, and the intelligentsia. She introduced Emily Hahn, the charismatic opium-smoking writer for The New Yorker, to the flamboyant hotelier Sir Victor Sassoon and legendary poet Sinmay Zau. And when Hollywood stars Anna May Wong, Charlie Chaplin, and Claudette Colbert passed through Shanghai, Bernardine organized gatherings to introduce them to their Shanghai contemporaries. When Bernardine’s salon could not accommodate all who wanted to attend, she founded the International Arts Theater to produce avant-garde plays, ballets, lectures, and visual arts exhibits, often pushing audiences beyond their comfort zones. In May 1933, the so-called Bernheim petition was submitted to the League of Nations in Geneva on behalf of the Paris Comité des Délégations Juives. With it, the disenfranchisement of German Jews by National Socialist Germany was charged under international law. It caused all anti-Jewish laws in Upper Silesia to be suspended by 1937. This complaint, its genesis and its astonishing consequences from today's point of view have largely been forgotten, as has Jewish minority diplomacy as a whole or its individual representatives, e.g. Leo Motzkin, Emil Margulies or Nathan Feinberg. Philipp Graf examines the petition in the context of the general minority problems of the interwar period gives insights into the practice of non-governmental Jewish interest representation.
