Pallas Athene Publishers Auguste Rodin
Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) was already an old man when the young poet Rainer Maria Rilke went to interview him for the first time. Rilke stayed on to work as Rodin's secretary. Intensely sensitive to art, and in particular to the irreducible power of objects, and yet able to express this awareness in prose of great lyricism and clarity, Rilke was destined to be the critic who would most naturally dramatise Rodin's work. In 1903 Rilke published this essay, a sustained and profound meditation on the unique power of Rodin's sculpture that has never been equalled. Written around a chronology of Rodin's work, it is also a very approachable introduction to some of the greatest sculpture of the nineteenth century.

Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG Kreativitat: Konzept und Lebensstil
Creativity is highly valued and admired as a characteristic of outstanding people. It is believed that creative individuals, because of their talent, playfully produce new and extraordinary things, that they are kissed by the muses or driven by mysterious forces. However, modern science has knowledge that sheds light on the secret of creativity. The author describes the essential elements of creativity in a generally understandable way: talent, knowledge, motivation, personality traits and environmental conditions. Then the five phases of the creative process are presented: preparation, incubation, illumination, realization and verification. From the analysis of creative personalities and processes, consequences are drawn for their promotion in school, work, science, culture, economy and politics. A sound understanding of creativity helps to discover and promote creative potential in the areas mentioned. In today's world with its diverse challenges, however, not only extraordinary, but also everyday creativity is of great practical importance. Paying attention to creative aspects in education, training, partnership, sexuality and personal development leads to a meaningful lifestyle.

Taschen GmbH Bruegel
The great Flemish painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1526/31–1569) was an astoundingly inventive painter and draftsman, who made his art historical mark with beautiful, evocative landscapes as well as religious subjects, both notable for their vernacular language and attention to everyday, contemporary life. Immersing himself in rural or small-town communities, Bruegel is particularly notable for his depiction of peasant experience and folk culture, earning the artist nickname “Peasant Bruegel.” Whether hunters shivering in the snow or a boisterous country fair, Bruegel raised the farming, festivals, gatherings, and games of peasant culture to the status of high art. Bruegel’s imposing religious and moral subjects, meanwhile, such as The Triumph of Death and The Tower of Babel are as awestriking and influential today as they were in the 16th century, inspiring contemporary culture from The Lord of the Rings cinematic battle scenes to Don DeLillo’s novel Underworld. From the corn harvest to the conversion of Saul, from quaint wedding processions to Christ’s road to Calvary, this book brings together the rich range of Bruegel’s subjects to introduce his powerful compositions of both biblical and earthly tableaux.

Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG Leidenschaft: Goethes Weg zur Kreativität: Eine Psychobiographie
Goethe was not only a child genius, a beloved poet, and an important politician throughout his life he also sometimes missed and suffered for it. Yet he had the special ability to accept mental anguish and to implement it for the further development of his own creativity.Since Goethes time psychology has made great progress, and especially neurobiology has made great discoveries about the nature of the human mind. Nevertheless, we have few documents that so deeply illustrate the development of creativity as Goethes letters and his works not to mention the detailed descriptions delivered by his family and friends, both male and female. His path to creativity can even today be an inspiration and a beacon to guide all of us to discover our own creative tendencies. Thus, a study of Goethes path to creativity is not solely an intellectual delight, but also one with very practical benefits.

Editorial Trotta, S.A. Cuarenta y nueve poemas

JCB Mohr (Paul Siebeck) Gott wahrnehmen: Die Sinne im Johannesevangelium. Ratio Religionis Studien IV

Red Hen Press Larenopfer
René Maria Rilke was born in Prague on 4 December 1875 and died near Montreux in Switzerland, on 29 December 1926. The foremost lyric German poet of the 20th century, he is remembered primarily for his Duino Elegies, the Sonnets to Orpheus, the Neue Gedichte, the Buch der Bilder, the Stundenbuch, and the Cornet. Although his mature poetry has been translated into many languages, his early poetry remains accessible only in the original German. This translation of the Larenopfer, or offerings to the Lares, the Roman household deities, are songs that Rilke sings to his hometown Prague and to his beloved Bohemia, short poems on the parks, fountains, churches, bridges and palaces of Prague, not forgetting Rabbi Löw’s legends, the Jewish cemetery, the Thirty Years’ War and, of course, young love. This cycle of 90 poems offers the reader a unique view into Rilke’s fascinating world, the turn-of-the-century atmosphere of Prague, then the third largest city in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Here a young German of the ruling bourgeoisie shows great appreciation for contemporary Czech literary works and enthusiasm for the cause of Czech cultural identity. Larenopfer possesses not only literary merit but is also of considerable sociological and historical interest.

Arc Publications Pure Contradiction: Selected Poems
Rainer Maria Rilke's work spans the divide between turn-of-the-century Europe's decadence and its post First World War revolutionary modernism, always struggling to develop, to seek and reach beyond itself. This selection of poems from throughout Rilke's creative output is arranged chronologically, placing poems of similar themes and / or modes of expression close to one another, making bed-fellows of poems rarely seen together. Each poem is to a greater or lesser extent conscious of others. The aim is to illuminate the underlying themes which Rilke said he had arrived at very early in his life. In his powerful new translation, skilfully shaped into current English, Ian Crockatt succeeds in catching Rilke's blend of crafted sensuality and inward-focused spiritual searching, while his comprehensive introduction and notes to this selection are both informative and enlightening.

University of Nebraska Press Hoarding New Guinea: Writing Colonial Ethnographic Collection Histories for Postcolonial Futures
Hoarding New Guinea provides a new cultural history of colonialism that pays close attention to the millions of Indigenous artifacts that serve as witnesses to Europe’s colonial past in ethnographic museums. Rainer F. Buschmann investigates the roughly two hundred thousand artifacts extracted from the colony of German New Guinea from 1870 to 1920. Reversing the typical trajectories that place ethnographic museums at the center of the analysis, he concludes that museum interests in material culture alone cannot account for the large quantities of extracted artifacts. Buschmann moves beyond the easy definition of artifacts as trophies of colonial defeat or religious conversion, instead employing the term hoarding to describe the irrational amassing of Indigenous artifacts by European colonial residents. Buschmann also highlights Indigenous material culture as a bargaining chip for its producers to engage with the imposed colonial regime. In addition, by centering an area of collection rather than an institution, he opens new areas of investigation that include non-professional ethnographic collectors and a sustained rather than superficial consideration of Indigenous peoples as producers behind the material culture. Hoarding New Guinea answers the call for a more significant historical focus on colonial ethnographic collections in European museums.

Taschen GmbH Goya
From court portraits for the Spanish royals to horrific scenes of conflict and suffering, Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (1746–1828) made a mark as one of Spain’s most revered and controversial artists. A master of form and light, his influence reverberates down the centuries, inspiring and fascinating artists from the Romantic Eugène Delacroix to Britart enfants terribles, the Chapman brothers. Born in Fuendetodos, Spain, in 1746, Goya was apprenticed to the Spanish royal family in 1774, where he produced etchings and tapestry cartoons for grand palaces and royal residences across the country. He was also patronized by the aristocracy, painting commissioned portraits of the rich and powerful with his increasingly fluid and expressive style. Later, after a bout of illness, the artist moved towards darker etchings and drawings, introducing a nightmarish realm of witches, ghosts, and fantastical creatures. It was, however, with his horrific depictions of conflict that Goya achieved enduring impact. Executed between 1810 and 1820, The Disasters of War was inspired by atrocities committed during the Spanish struggle for independence from the French and penetrated the very heart of human cruelty and sadism. The bleak tones, agitated brushstrokes, and aggressive use of Baroque-like light and dark contrasts recalled Velázquez and Rembrandt, but Goya’s subject matter was unprecedented in its brutality and honesty. In this introductory book from TASCHEN Basic Art 2.0 we set out to explore the full arc of Goya’s remarkable career, from elegant court painter to deathly seer of suffering and grotesquerie. Along the way, we encounter such famed portraits as Don Manuel Osorio Manrique de Zúñiga, the dazzling Naked Maja, and The 3rd of May 1808 in Madrid, one of the most heart-stopping images of war in the history of art.
