As an architect, urban planner and sculptor, Rob Krier has created a multifaceted oeuvre which is presented here in a comprehensive manner for the first time. After graduating, Krier first worked with O. M. Ungers and Frei Otto before setting up his own studios in Vienna and Berlin. He later taught at the Vienna University of Technology from 1976 to 1998 and as a visiting professor at Yale University in 1986. Drawing on a wealth of historical models and archetypal patterns, he developed new typologies of streets and public squares as an architect and urban planner, and was responsible for numerous urban development projects throughout Europe. These included the perimeter block development on Ritterstrasse for the IBA in Berlin, the residential complex on Breitenfurter Strasse in Vienna, the Kirchsteigfeld district in Potsdam, and numerous projects in the Netherlands.

François Valentiny and Hubert Hermann founded their studio shortly after graduating from the University of Applied Arts Vienna where they both studied under Wilhelm Holzbauer. Donald Judd was one of the most important exponents of American Minimal Art. Among the lesser-known aspects of his work are the numerous built architectural projects in which he explores the relationship between architecture art, furniture, and landscape. One particular location was of great significance to Judd’s architectural work: Fort D.R. Russell, a former US military base in the Chihuahuan desert on the southern edge of the pioneer town of Marfa, Texas. Judd acquired the fort and other structures in Marfa which he systematically converted into one of the largest ensemble collections of contemporary art in the world. This new edition updates and expands on the successful book of 2007. It presents two additional building complexes southwest of Marfa and includes a new epilogue by the author, which places Judd’s built architectural work from its beginning at 101 Spring Street, Judd’s studio and residence in New York, and the structures in Marfa in a contemporary context.

Paper and cardboard as sustainable building materials are currently the subject of research and testing. They can be produced inexpensively, are made from renewable raw materials and are completely recyclable. The focus of their application is on temporary uses, such as for transitional schools, emergency shelters or "microhomes". Properly protected from moisture and fire, the material proves to be durable. In 2001, UNESCO added the house to the List of World Cultural Heritage Sites. Villa le Lac, which was designated a World Heritage in 2016, was designed and built by Le Corbusier as Geneva lakeside home for his parents in 1925. Because of its spare arrangement of spaces, he referred to it as a “dwelling machine.” Even today it remains the modern prototype of the “small house” that fulfills all of the functions of a residence with a minimum of floor area and seamless transitions between spaces. For the first time, this book is appearing in three separate language editions, following the original edition in which Le Corbusier documented the history of the building: with photographs, sketches and a poetic text. Access to the original photographs allowed the quality of the illustrations in this edition to be improved significantly.

In 1951, Konrad Wachsmann and his department at the IIT received a commission from the US Air Force to investigate no less than a completely new method of construction based on the structural models he had already developed. The iconographic model of the US Air Force Hangar developed from this work was a true “turning point in building”: the structure designed represents an almost futurist promise of a fully industrialized building culture, the conceptual image of which also became the direct inspiration for various architectural avant-gardes. Stressing Wachsmann attempts to finally place Konrad Wachsmann’s achievement appropriately in architectural history and to critically compare the mental and material conditions involved in the construction of buildings at that time and today.

The movement of designed objects is not just something purely functional but also triggers a wide range of sensations. A curtain swaying gently in the wind can cause the onlooker to feel easy and relaxed, as if it was he or she who is floating in the air. This imagined projection caused by the perception of moving objects is called "kinesthetic empathy". In this study, which followed on from a dissertation at the School of Design Research in London, the author investigates the esthetics of movement by documenting his own design-based learning and research process in terms of "research through design", using the experimental cooperation with puppet players as an example. He thereby creates a framework that allows designers to observe the esthetics of objects in motion as a trigger of feelings.

The interaction between color and architecture determines our perception of space, and defines the tectonic relationships. The fascinating spatial potential of color, and the multi-layered dimensions of interpretation in the experience of color are design and communication means which, however, are often not fully used – color oscillates between autonomy and functional purpose, and should be understood as a distinct "material" that can be used as part of the design.
