Largely forgotten since the 1920s, German amateur photographs show the trench war at the Western Front as the infantry man or the company officer captured it spontaneously with his camera. In this way an intimate, moving and authentic view of the Western Front evolved that allows the tragedy of trench war to be viewed from a very different angle than that of professional press and propaganda photographers. Project Manhigh took humans to the threshold of space using balloons. In the 1950s, a small band of Air Force doctors were on the cutting edge of the United States' space research programs. Working at the Aeromedical Field Laboratory at Holloman Air Force Base in southern New Mexico, they used balloons to carry laboratory animals followed by human pilots above 99% of the atmosphere. Drawing upon flight reports and technical data, this book documents Project Manhigh and the high altitude flights that preceded it. The Manhigh flights were, in many ways, prototypes for future space missions. On each of the three flights, the Air Force placed a lone pilot in a sealed capsule nineteen miles above the ground. At such extreme altitudes, the pilots were well within the functional equivalent of outer space and needed the sealed capsule to survive. Manhigh existed prior to the creation of NASA and helped pave the way for human space exploration.

Before the Bay Bridge made access to the Atlantic easier, the Chesapeake Bay was dotted with beach-type resorts. Located in Calvert County, Maryland, Chesapeake Beach and neighboring North Beach were two of the most popular. Chesapeake Beach, the resort, officially opened on June 9, 1900 when visitors from Washington, D.C., stepped from the coaches of a brand new railroad specifically built to transport them there. Likewise, steamboat service from Baltimore to the resort was inaugurated the same day. The resort's success fueled the rise of North Beach, and the two destinations were popular with Washington and Baltimore residents for many years to come. Dawes, was a political masterpiece. This book is compiled from eyewitness accounts of the Coolidge-Dawes Lincoln Tour. It was documented by E. A. Seidel, who drove the lead vehicle and newspaper accounts along the route, all illustrated with 100 vintage photographs and political artifacts. Starting in Coolidge’s hometown of Plymouth, Vermont, the caravan wound its way down to New York City, then followed the Lincoln Highway across the country to San Francisco, then along the Pacific Coast. L Over five million people turned out to witness the caravan as it rolled along 6,500 miles — much of it still unpaved, ranging from dirt in good weather to mud in bad weather — and involving over 100,000 vehicles! Along the way local bands played, horns honked, most of the cars were decorated in red, white and blue, and two million campaign buttons were distributed. Civil War veterans who had voted for Abraham Lincoln were invited to sign a roster at the various stops and they turned out by the hundreds. National GOP dignitaries provided the rhetoric at the stops, making over 400 speeches promoting the re-election of Coolidge. The newspaper press along the route loved the event, proclaiming it “the largest continuous procession of any kind in all history.”
