Menstruation Now contains a chapter on advertising: the shifting “conversation” of menstruation in contemporary advertising leads to youtube videos and other online sources. Fiction: The central character in Alice Munro’s short story, “Chance,” discovers her period while on a train ride. Menstrual blood metaphorically spills over to inform the leaky narrative, the shape of the story, and the “female complaint.” Legal Discourse: Both sides in the legal battle over whether Terry Schiavo (who had been in a persistent vegetative state) should live or have the right to die invoked the fact of her menstrual blood to signify what each wanted, i.e., different definitions of womanhood and life. Pornographic films: Menstrual blood in pornographic films is analyzed as a “para-text,” what happens off-scene but is still caught on camera and becomes part of the fluidity of desire. A media icon: Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’s phantasized menstrual blood – her uterine utterance – is argued to take the place of the verbal utterances she wouldn’t emit (she was a witness to, but wholly silent about, the assassination and her marriage before that). Art: Contemporary menstrual art is examined with a view to understanding how it exposes, normalizes and aestheticizes the phenomenological experience of bleeding. Film: Menstrual blood in Ingmar Bergman’s film Cries and Whispers is seen as a liminal space of transition and ritual: both blood and liminality are charged with irrationality (and hence the potential for affirmation and re-performance). Television: Orange is the New Black (Netflix) contains comical plot-lines about menstruation and menstrual products in its prison setting. Unruly blood is analyzed in conjunction with characters – inmates – who are always-already unruly: they are in prison, i.e., in necessity of restraint. Feminine comedy itself is a challenge to discursive authority; menstrual blood in this context is positioned as a noisy disruption and reigned in by the small screen and the comedic apparatus. In sum, blood is performative and never means only one thing. It can thus, now as always, be performed again in the service of new meanings and experiences.

Big businesses have faced a persistent dilemma in China since the nineteenth century: how to retain control over corporate hierarchies while adapting to local social networks. Sherman Cochran, in the first study to compare Western, Japanese, and Chinese businesses in Chinese history, shows how various businesses have struggled with this issue as they have adjusted to dramatic changes in Chinese society, politics, and foreign affairs. Cochran devotes a chapter each to six of the biggest business ventures in China before the Communist revolution: two Western-owned companies, Standard Oil and British-American Tobacco Company; two Japanese-owned companies, Mitsui Trading Company and Naigai Cotton Company; and two Chinese-owned firms, Shenxin Cotton Mills and China Match Company. In each case, he notes the businesses' efforts to introduce corporate hierarchies for managing the distribution of goods and the organization of factory workers, and he describes their encounters with a variety of Chinese social networks: tenacious factions of English-speaking compradors and powerful trade associations of non-English-speaking merchants channeling goods into the marketplace; and small cliques of independent labor bosses and big gangs of underworld figures controlling workers in the factories. Drawing upon archival sources and individual interviews, Cochran describes the wide range of approaches that these businesses adopted to deal with Chinese social networks. Each business negotiated its own distinctive relationship with local networks, and as each business learned about marketing goods and managing factory workers in China, it adjusted this relationship. Sometimes it strengthened its hierarchical control over networks and sometimes it delegated authority to networks, but it could not afford to take networks for granted or regard them as static because they, in turn, took their own initiative and made their own adjustments. In this book Cochran calls into question the idea that the spread of capitalism has caused business organizations to converge over time. His cases bring to light numerous organizational forms used by Western, Japanese, and Chinese corporations in China's past, and his conclusions suggest that businesses have experimented with new forms on the basis of their historical experiences--especially their encounters with social networks.

At the turn of the twentieth century, the photographer Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky undertook a quest to document an empire that was undergoing rapid change due to industrialization and the building of railroads. Between 1903 and 1916 Prokudin-Gorsky, who developed a pioneering method of capturing color images on glass plates, scoured the Russian Empire with the patronage of Nicholas II. Intrepidly carrying his cumbersome and awkward camera from the western borderlands over the Volga River to Siberia and central Asia, he created a singular record of Imperial Russia. In 1918 Prokudin-Gorsky escaped an increasingly chaotic, violent Russia and regained nearly 2,000 of his bulky glass negatives. His subsequent peripatetic existence before settling in Paris makes his collection's survival all the more miraculous. The U.S. Library of Congress acquired Prokudin-Gorsky's collection in 1948, and since then it has become a touchstone for understanding pre-revolutionary Russia. Now digitized and publicly available, his images are a sensation in Russia, where people visit websites dedicated to them. William Craft Brumfield—photographer, scholar, and the leading authority on Russian architecture in the West—began working with Prokudin-Gorsky's photographs in 1985. He curated the first public exhibition of them in the United States and has annotated the entire collection. In Journeys through the Russian Empire, Brumfield—who has spent decades traversing Russia and photographing buildings and landscapes in their various stages of disintegration or restoration—juxtaposes Prokudin-Gorsky's images against those he took of the same buildings and areas. In examining the intersections between his own photography and that of Prokudin-Gorsky, Brumfield assesses the state of preservation of Russia's architectural heritage and calls into question the nostalgic assumptions of those who see Prokudin-Gorsky's images as the recovery of the lost past of an idyllic, pre-Soviet Russia. In today’s world, science itself, which we are constantly being told is a neutral vehicle for wholly objective ideas and theories, is increasingly being hijacked and abused by the toxic modern cult of identity politics, of both left and right. But should we be too surprised by any of this? No, because this exact same sorry process has happened time and again before, under the rule of totalitarian political cults like the Nazis and the Soviets, both of which vigorously promoted various pseudoscientific theories of ‘Aryan Science’ and ‘Marxist Science’ on the sole grounds that they were ideologically correct as opposed to being factually so. Nazi racial pseudoscience and belief in nonsense like the ‘World Ice Theory’, which claimed that stars did not really exist and were actually just reflections of the sun off giant floating space-icebergs, were widely encouraged in the Third Reich, and used for long-term military weather-forecasting purposes. Likewise, the ideas of the renegade biologist Trofim Lysenko, who developed a deluded ‘anti-capitalist’ theory of genetics opposed to Darwin’s, were responsible for widespread famine in the USSR when Stalin allowed him to apply them practically towards the nation’s crop-harvests. Those academics and functionaries who disputed these clearly false pseudoscientific notions often found themselves in deep trouble – or, ultimately, dead. At the present stage of development of the higher education system, psychological support of students' professional development is relevant and necessary. It will improve the quality of their training as future specialists. There is a need for a holistic approach to providing psychological support for all participants in the educational process of the University: students, their parents and teachers. There are few scientific publications on modern psychological service in education. First of all, because this topic is more likely applied than theoretical or methodological. However, this book discloses the issues and problems of the theory and methodology of psychological service in educational institutions. The authors of the monograph relied on the model of analysis of mental development proposed by N. Semago and M. Semago, thanks to which it becomes possible to analyze the key moments of changes (transformations) of mental development systematically, distinguishing between "natural" (phenomenological level of research) and "higher" mental formations (causal level). Psychological development of the students' personality in higher schools in the educational environment (E. Ponomareva, O. Rudakova), organization of the university psychological service (L. Bura, Y. Zalevskaya), successful adaptation of high school students as a necessary condition for their acmeological development (L. Bura). In addition, the results of empirical studies on career orientations, (S. Kucherenko, T. Pavluk), attention features (E. Brunner) and value orientations of Internet addicted students (I. Sultanova, O. Shutova) are presented. The chapter about B. Hellinger's systemic constellation as a method of research for an aesthetic object by V. Vynohradov and E. Brunner stands out somewhat separately. A valuable contribution to the practice of organizing a modern psychological service of a higher educational institution with psychological specialties was made by the chapter "Advanced psychodiagnostics of first-year students as a factor in the effectiveness of teaching at a university" (M. Latysheva, E. Brunner). Autors suggests using the technology of deep psychological diagnostics in working with first-year students to carry out a comprehensive assessment of personal characteristics and the actual mental state of each of them. The author recommends using these results to develop a program of individual educational route of the student, and, if necessary, to determine the ways of the most effective corrective work at the initial stage of professionalization. Also the basic components of psychological counseling as one of the important areas of work of practical psychologists are analyzed. The review of theoretical sources on the problem of psychological education in the system of psychological support of students in institutions of higher education is presented. It is concluded that psychological education can be effectively implemented only by being integrated into the general system of the educational process at the University. The importance of psychological correction for students of the specialty "Practical psychology" is emphasized, since it is important to identify their personal problems with the presence of tendencies to psychological death, a sense of inferiority and a tendency to psychological damage. The personal problem is not recognized by the subject, so it is quite difficult to solve it. This is possible with the qualified help of a psychologist who helps to detect the personal problem in its deep psychological essence and transfer it from the implicit level to the explicit one. The subject, as a rule, is aware only of the consequences of having a personal problem (anxiety, tension, increased aggression, etc.), but not its causes. This leads to the fact that many students of the faculty of psychology subconsciously seek rather psychological help, than acquiring professional knowledge and skills in the field. Such people are recommended to undergo psychological correction in full, which optimizes their personal potential. Psychological education is aimed primarily at the formation of the psychological culture of society in general and students in particular. In addition, psychological counseling (I. Erina), psychological education in the system of psychological support of students (G. Grigoryev) and group variant of deep-correction work in the author's version of T. Yatsenko's psychodynamic approach (O. Usatenko, M. Maik) in the system of higher education of Humanities are disclosed in detail. The process of student adaptation in higher education is a process aimed at achieving a dynamic balance between the student and the educational environment. In this process, the student can not only adapt and achieve sustainability, but also be able to unlock their potential and make positive changes in the environment. As a result of an empirical study conducted by S. Kucherenko among students of the Academy of Pedagogy and Humanities, the features of students' career attitudes are clarified. In particular, there was found a low level of orientation to the stability of the place of residence with a high orientation to the stability of the place of work, i.e. a high orientation to building a career in the chosen direction without a desire to work in this region. The algorithm proposed in the study allows to design an individual strategy in the field of career attitudes and expectations of specialists in various fields of training. According to I. Sultanova, a significant part of students with Internet addiction tend to live in the present or yesterday, they have a predominant dissatisfaction with their life in the present and past. Students without Internet addiction are characterized by the presence of certain life orientations, purposefulness, orientation to the present and future. It is also revealed that both groups of students are characterized by fatalism, the belief that a person's life is not subject to conscious control. Thus, the psychological service in education is a practical tool that adapts scientific psychological knowledge to the immediate needs of employees in the field of education and at the same time allows you to solve urgent problems in this area.

P-glycoprotein (P-gp), encoded by the multidrug-resistance (MDR)-1 gene is one of the best studied efflux transporters that is linked to multidrug resistance in cancer chemotherapies. P-gp belongs to the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter family of proteins that utilizes energy derived from hydrolysis of ATP to efflux endogenous and exogenous xenobiotics, metabolites and toxins from the intracellular space to the outside, thereby providing a general protective role. P-gp is expressed on the apical plasma membrane of all major drug eliminating organs such as the intestine (enterocytes), liver (bile canaliculi), kidney (proximal tubules), brain (endothelia of blood-brain barrier) and in certain tumor types. In the intestine and BBB, P-gp limits entry of drugs by actively pumping drugs back into the lumen or blood, respectively. In the liver and kidney, P-gp actively effluxes drugs, endogenous substances and metabolites into bile or urine, thereby removing them from the body. Upregulation of P-gp in tumor cells is noted in several cancers and is a hallmark for drug resistance. Additionally, P-gp is also shown to play a role in neurogenesis and maintaining homeostasis in the brain. Alteration of P-gp expression is observed in neurodegenerative diseases, highlighting its importance in maintaining normal brain health. Due to its central role in defining oral pharmacokinetics, systemic clearance, tissue exposure, organ health and chemoresistance, much of the research has been focused on modulating P-gp. Chemical inhibitors, formulation-based and epigenetic approaches are applied to modulate P-gp activity with a goal to improve oral pharmacokinetics, increase tumor and brain penetration, minimize organ toxicity and potentially treat neurodegenerative diseases. Although enormous research on P-gp has been published, a book chapter exclusively and comprehensively covering diverse aspects of P-gp, including the recent developments in the field, is required. With much enthusiasm from the publisher, we have collaborated to bring together wide-ranging topics on P-gp. In the past few years, there has been a considerable increase in the number of new and emerging pollutants in the limited water resources around the world, posing a serious threat to human health and the ecosystems. These pollutants, which are also referred to as new chemicals without regulatory status, are poorly understood and therefore not properly monitored or effectively removed from wastewater using conventional methods. Relevant topics addressing these challenges are presented in this book containing 12 chapters, which are consequently divided into two sections (Section 1: Pollutants in Wastewater; Section 2: Wastewater Remediation Strategies). The first section provides a systematic review of recent detection methods suitable for the rapid and accurate identification of some emerging pollutants from wastewater. Further development in the book fairly complement the first part by providing solutions for the removal of the emerging pollutants from wastewater and restoration of usable water; innovative approaches encompassing inter-disciplinary processes supported by sustainable technologies are therefore the focus of the second part of the book. Kenneth Rexroth called Denise Levertov (1923–1997) "the most subtly skillful poet of her generation, the most profound, . . . and the most moving." Author of twenty-four volumes of poetry, four books of essays, and several translations, Levertov became a lauded and honored poet. Born in England, she published her first book of poems at age twenty-three, but it was not until she married and came to the United States in 1948 that she found her poetic voice, helped by the likes of William Carlos Williams, Robert Duncan, and Robert Creeley. Shortly before her death in 1997, the woman who claimed no country as home was nominated to be America's poet laureate. Levertov was the quintessential romantic. She wanted to live vividly, intensely, passionately, and on a grand scale. She wanted the persistence of Cézanne and the depth and generosity of Rilke. Once she acclimated herself to America, the dreamy lyric poetry of her early years gave way to the joy and wonder of ordinary life.
