Michelin Editions des Voyages Streetwise Munich Map - Laminated City Center Street Map of Munich, Germany
REVISED 2023 Streetwise Munich Map is a laminated city center map of Munich, Germany - Accordian fold pocket size travel map with integrated metro map including S-Bahn & U-Bahn lines & stations. Coverage includes: Main Munich Map 1:14,000 Munich Area Map 1:73,000 Munich Metro Map Dimensions: 4" x 8.5" folded, 8.5" x 28" unfolded Munich, regional capital of Bavaria in south central Germany, is the second most popular destination in Germany after Berlin. The city is a center for culture and arts, with a staggering assortment of museums. It's also a fun loving, convivial, good old fashion party town known for the annual Oktoberfest. Munich is a city of contrasts. The Marienplatz is the heart of Munich and the site of its most important historic buildings. The square is dominated by the Neo-gothic Town Hall featuring its famous Glockenspiel. The Alte Pinakothek houses ones of Europe s most important art collections. In contrast is the Hofbrauhouse where beer has been swilled at this world famous tavern site since it became a royal brewery in 1605. In Englischer Garten you'll find Haus der Kunst, a popular place for art exhibits. It's located adjacent to one of the best river surfing spots in Munich (there are several): the Eisenbach River. You can stand on the bridge and watch as surfers carve turns on the icy water. The water is shallow and the water is fast, so this may not be the best place to try the sport for the first time, but it's definitely worth watching as surfers line up for a chance to test their skills on this permanent 3 foot wave. And then there is Theresienwiese, the park on the west side of town where the vast beerhall tents are pitched for Octoberfest. The main STREETWISE® map of Munich covers the central city in detail and contains all important sites, architecture, metro stations and parks. Also provided is an inset map which features Munich s metro system and fare structure. This Munich map will enable you to navigate your way to Nymhenburg Palace or Olympic Park, both of which are outside the center city. A Munich Area map, which guides you in, out, and around Munich, is helpful in finding the Munich International Airport and other out of town sites. Our pocket size map of Munich is laminated for durability and accordion folding for effortless use. To enhance your visit to Munich, check out the Michelin Green Guide Germany which details sites and attractions using the famed Michelin star-rating system so you can prioritize your trip based on your time and interest. Chelsea Green Publishing Co The Nourishing Asian Kitchen: Nutrient-Dense Recipes for Health and Healing
“[These recipes] are designed to be nourishing as well as delicious . . . Whether you are a seasoned home cook or a novice in the kitchen, The Nourishing Asian Kitchen is perfect for anyone looking to explore traditional Asian cooking.”—Sally Fallon, author of Nourishing Traditions Featuring over 100 delicious recipes that utilize whole foods, classic ferments, hearty broths, and healing herbs and spices, The Nourishing Asian Kitchen presents an innovative approach to experiencing Asian cuisine while promoting nutritious, garden-to-plate meals that are easy to make. When Sophia Nguyen Eng moved to the Appalachian Mountains in Tennessee to start a family farm, she was determined to honor the cultural food traditions and flavors passed down by her parents, who fled Vietnam in 1975. The meals of her childhood drew inspiration from the rich culinary traditions of Vietnam, China, Japan, Korea, and other Asian countries. However, Sophia noticed that preparing these dishes in the United States often relied heavily on processed ingredients containing artificial flavors and preservatives. She was determined to recreate the flavorful recipes she loved while making them healthier. Inspired by the nutritional research of Weston A. Price, the regenerative farming practices of Joel Salatin, and the traditional Asian recipes passed down through her family for generations, Sophia has curated a unique collection of wholesome dishes in The Nourishing Asian Kitchen. These recipes explore the proper preparation of grains, dairy, meats, and ferments, emphasizing fresh ingredients and traditional cooking methods while focusing on flavor, food quality, ingredient sourcing, seasonality, and eating nose-to-tail. With an opening sectioning on mastering basic techniques—like working with bone broth, fish fumet, and ghee—the recipes range from familiar classics to mind-blowing creations, including: Sauces: Korean Gochujang Sauce, Hoisin Sauce, Vietnamese “Peanut” Dipping Sauce, Lemongrass Chili Oil Vegetable & Sides: Pickled Red Onion, Daikon Kimchi, Wild Bibimbap, Mushroom Banchan Soups: Oxtail Pho, Sweet and Sour Tamarind Soup, Spicy Thai Hot Pot, Crab Noodle Soup Meats: Garlic Butter Chicken Wings, Five Spice Pork Belly Banh Mi, Shaking Beef with Watercress Salad, Lamb Bulgogi Spring Rolls Beverages & Desserts: Vietnamese Coffee, Strawberry Lychee Panna Cotta, Matcha Green Tea Honey Ice Cream And much more! From hot pot to tempura, kimchi to pho, each recipe is designed to nourish the body and reconnect with tradition and heritage. And with beautiful photography by David K. Peng, easy-to-follow instructions, and tips for sourcing high-quality ingredients, The Nourishing Asian Kitchen is a must-have for anyone seeking to explore the world of Asian cuisine through the lens of nourishing traditions. This delightful book is part history, part personal stories, and all wisdom. If you want to understand what Agile is and how it came to be, this is the book for you."Grady Booch "Bob's frustration colors every sentence of Clean Agile, but it's a justified frustration. What is in the world of Agile development is nothing compared to what could be. This book is Bob's perspective on what to focus on to get to that what could be. And he's been there, so it's worth listening."Kent Beck It's good to read Uncle Bob's take on Agile. Whether just beginning, or a seasoned Agilista, you would do well to read this book. Jon Kern Nearly twenty years after the Agile Manifesto was first presented, the legendary Robert C. Now, in Clean Agile: Back to Basics, he strips away misunderstandings and distractions that over the years have made it harder to use Agile than was originally intended. Martin describes what Agile is in no uncertain terms: a small discipline that helps small teams manage small projects . . . with huge implications because every big project is comprised of many small projects. Drawing on his fifty years' experience with projects of every conceivable type, he shows how Agile can help you bring true professionalism to software development. She is certain that her perfect, pristine sister is about to marry the wrong man—and Caroline has slid into sin with a boy she’s known her entire life, wondering why God would care so much about her virginity anyway. When it comes to light, five weeks before Abigail’s wedding, that Luke has been lying to his family, the entire Nolan clan falls into a tailspin. With Quaglia and Lande’s clear, step-by-step guidance, teacher interviews, reflections, and expert research, you’ll help teachers: Work collaboratively for school change Inspire and positively affect education stakeholders Effectively express themselves Build self-worth and realize their potential Increase engagement and define a sense of purpose Amplify their voice via technology Bolster teacher leadership and improve retention, innovation, professional development, and student achievement with this breakthrough guide! "In this innovative book, Russell Quaglia and Lisa Lande sets out how we can change that and how the voice of teachers can serve to systematically advance the knowledge-base of the profession and establish opportunities for exchange, collaboration and support. In today’s world, even the best Minister of Education can no longer solve the challenges of millions of teachers. But if we can capitalise on the expertise of millions of teachers, we can create the world’s best school system." Andreas Schleicher OECD "Quaglia and Lande have produced a treasure trove of new and high leverage ideas. Teachers Voice contains two powerful messages. One is that teacher voice contains the seeds of widespread transformation of learning. The other main message, alas, is that teacher voice is vastly under utilized---and teachers know it! This book is a call and guide to action to leverage a resource that is under our noses. Read it and act." Michael Fullan, Professor Emeritus University of Toronto "Teaching and fishing? Only a couple very imaginative educators would pair these two topics in a book. But that is just what Russell Quaglia and Lisa Lande have done, and that is just what they are—imaginative, optimistic, and deep-thinking educators. Their triadic epigram—Listen, Learn, Lead—would have saved many a frustrated school administrator who thought they should start with ′lead.′ This book is chock-full of sound advice, practical ideas, and voices of teachers, all describing how teachers work together and communicate with each other, with students, and with parents. Who, other than teachers, deserves a more prominent, yes central, role in any discussion of how schools improve. This is a delightful read that makes a less-imaginative educator want to get up in the morning and go to work. Or go fishing." Dr. Sam Redding, Executive Director Academic Development Institute

Continuum Publishing Corporation Van Dyke Parks' Song Cycle
Despite Warner Brothers Records' conviction that it had mid-wifed the American equivalent of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, "Song Cycle" wasn't rock music, and it didn't sell like rock music. The album's arrangements taxed the storage capacity of multi-track tape and its lyrics allowed enquiring minds to follow a Joycean snakes-and-ladders path through multiple meanings, allusive wordplay and puns. "Van Dyke Parks' Song Cycle" is an intelligent take on a classic left-field album. For good and for ill, the full arsenal of bouquets and brickbats available to music writers has been tossed at Van Dyke Parks during his tenure of forty years and more in the music business. The Mississippi native has been hailed as a great American original - Charles Ives in Groucho Marx's pajamas, was Rolling Stone's pull quote - and derided as a charlatan. He was among the first to achieve the questionable status of cult artist; defended by a vocal few, dismissed or ignored by the greater audience. His career arc, and indeed his own life invite parallel consideration with another maverick who made his name in Hollywood, the film director and actor Orson Welles. Both were immediately recognized as child prodigies and took full advantage of the status conferred upon them. Each had the mantle of genius conferred upon them; in both cases, the mantle was worn with increasing difficulty as the years progressed. Both men, perhaps unfairly, have been accused of never bettering their artistic debuts. The compounded triumph and debacle of Welles' Citizen Kane is the stuff of a crammed shelf of film history books. In Van Dyke Parks' case, his calling card and his bete noir both fit within the same cardboard sleeve, the one containing "Song Cycle". The album was released on Warner Brothers Records in 1968. It cost more than any recording made prior to that time (Warners would ultimately recoup its costs sometime in the early 90s). No one can say that the label didn't get its money's worth: "Song Cycle"'s arrangements taxed the storage capacity of multi-track tape and its lyrics allowed enquiring minds to follow a Joycean snakes-and-ladders path through multiple meanings, allusive wordplay and puns. Said lyrics were sung by their author, his piping tenor swathed in a galactic fog of studio effects. The rhythms veered from Broadway to box step, little or none cut from the cloth of psychedelic, blues-based turbulence that dominated the landscape of the late 60s. 'A growing Alexandria of rock criticism' - "Los Angeles Times", 2008. 'Ideal for the rock geek who thinks liner notes just aren't enough' - "Rolling Stone". 'One of the coolest publishing imprints on the planet' - "Bookslut". 'A brilliant series...each one a word of real love" - "NME" (UK). Following the low-budget Oakland Athletics, their larger-than-life general manger, Billy Beane, and the strange brotherhood of amateur baseball enthusiasts, Michael Lewis has written not only "the single most influential baseball book ever" (Rob Neyer, Slate) but also what "may be the best book ever written on business" (Weekly Standard). I wrote this book because I fell in love with a story. The story concerned a small group of undervalued professional baseball players and executives, many of whom had been rejected as unfit for the big leagues, who had turned themselves into one of the most successful franchises in Major League Baseball. But the idea for the book came well before I had good reason to write it—before I had a story to fall in love with. It began, really, with an innocent question: how did one of the poorest teams in baseball, the Oakland Athletics, win so many games? With these words Michael Lewis launches us into the funniest, smartest, and most contrarian book since, well, since Liar's Poker. Moneyball is a quest for something as elusive as the Holy Grail, something that money apparently can't buy: the secret of success in baseball. The logical places to look would be the front offices of major league teams, and the dugouts, perhaps even in the minds of the players themselves. Lewis mines all these possibilities—his intimate and original portraits of big league ballplayers are alone worth the price of admission—but the real jackpot is a cache of numbers—numbers!—collected over the years by a strange brotherhood of amateur baseball enthusiasts: software engineers, statisticians, Wall Street analysts, lawyers and physics professors. What these geek numbers show—no, prove—is that the traditional yardsticks of success for players and teams are fatally flawed. Even the box score misleads us by ignoring the crucial importance of the humble base-on-balls. This information has been around for years, and nobody inside Major League Baseball paid it any mind. And then came Billy Beane, General Manager of the Oakland Athletics. Billy paid attention to those numbers —with the second lowest payroll in baseball at his disposal he had to—and this book records his astonishing experiment in finding and fielding a team that nobody else wanted. Moneyball is a roller coaster ride: before the 2002 season opens, Oakland must relinquish its three most prominent (and expensive) players, is written off by just about everyone, and then comes roaring back to challenge the American League record for consecutive wins. In a narrative full of fabulous characters and brilliant excursions into the unexpected, Michael Lewis shows us how and why the new baseball knowledge works. He also sets up a sly and hilarious morality tale: Big Money, like Goliath, is always supposed to win... how can we not cheer for David?

HarperCollins Publishers Inc The Gambler: How Penniless Dropout Kirk Kerkorian Became the Greatest Deal Maker in Capitalist History
NATIONAL BESTSELLER “Offers an entertaining look at Kerkorian’s outsize life… an interesting portrait of a billionaire.” – Wall Street Journal The rags-to-riches story of one of America’s wealthiest and least-known financial giants, self-made billionaire Kirk Kerkorian—the daring aviator, movie mogul, risk-taker, and business tycoon who transformed Las Vegas and Hollywood to become one of the leading financiers in American business.Kerkorian combined the courage of a World War II pilot, the fortitude of a scrappy boxer, the cunning of an inscrutable poker player and an unmatched genius for making deals. He never put his name on a building, but when he died he owned almost every major hotel and casino in Las Vegas. He envisioned and fostered a new industry —the leisure business. Three times he built the biggest resort hotel in the world. Three times he bought and sold the fabled MGM Studios, forever changing the way Hollywood does business. His early life began as far as possible from a place on the Forbes List of Billionaires when he and his Armenian immigrant family lost their farm to foreclosure. He was four. They arrived in Los Angeles penniless and moved often, staying one step ahead of more evictions. Young Kirk learned English on the streets of L.A., made pennies hawking newspapers and dropped out after eighth grade. How he went on to become one of the richest and most generous men in America—his net worth as much as $20 billion—is a story largely unknown to the world. That’s because what Kerkorian valued most was his privacy. His very private life turned to tabloid fodder late in life when a former professional tennis player falsely claimed that the eighty-five-year-old billionaire fathered her child. In this engrossing biography, investigative reporter William C. Rempel digs deep into Kerkorian’s long-guarded history to introduce a man of contradictions—a poorly educated genius for deal-making, an extraordinarily shy man who made the boldest of business ventures, a careful and calculating investor who was willing to bet everything on a single roll of the dice.Unlike others of his status and importance, Kerkorian made few public appearances and strenuously avoided personal publicity. His friends and associates, however, were some of the biggest names in business, entertainment, and sports—among them Howard Hughes, Ted Turner, Steve Wynn, Michael Milken, Cary Grant, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Elvis Presley, Mike Tyson, and Andre Agassi. When he died in 2015 two years shy of the century mark, Kerkorian had outlived many of his closest friends and associates. Now, Rempel meticulously pieces together revealing fragments of Kerkorian’s life, collected from diverse sources—war records, business archives, court documents, news clippings and the recollections and recorded memories of longtime pals and relatives. In The Gambler, Rempel illuminates this unknown, self-made man and his inspiring legacy as never before.

Under a Dark Cloud is full of drama, mystery and tension. One of my favourite series around.' James Delargy‘A coiled and wholly satisfying mystery, elevated by melancholic piquancy. The authentic police thrills and teasing dynamics of the characters are handled with the same elegance as the rueful climax, which long after the book is closed still feels perfect and inevitable.’ Dominic Nolan ‘Once again Louisa Scarr has created a thoroughly believable world in which to set a brilliantly compulsive story. The characters are so well-drawn that it’s a pleasure to spend time with them, and I can’t wait for number three!’ Alison Belsham'Characters I care about, inventive plot and expert storytelling –a big thumbs up from me.' Fliss Chester‘A fast-paced and deft meteorological mystery that twists its way to a brilliant conclusion. Scarr’s characters are beautifully realised, flawed and complex – their stories make the quiet moments every bit as rewarding as the dramatic ones. McGraw-Hill Education - Europe Security Analysis: The Classic 1934 Edition
Rare is the opportunity to see, much less own, an original. But this unusual, carefully crafted reproduction of Benjamin Graham and David Dodd's immortal Security Analysis gives you that chance--to read and treasure a true classic--the book that gave birth to value investing.Continuously in print through five editions, for more than 60 years, and through nearly a million copies, the primer for many of America's most illustrious investors--and the wellspring of Graham and Dodd's Wall Street Immortality--Security Analysis is indisputably the most influential book on investing ever written. Still the investors' bible, it's as frequently consulted today as it was when it first appeared in 1934.Of course, over the years and over five editions, Security Analysis changed. Its language was modernized. New material was added. Metaphors and examples were brought up to date. In the light of changing times, these alterations were necessary and appropriate. But what of the original book? The very durability of this work arouses our curiosity. And what we discover when we return to the original is very simply a classic, a work whose uncompromising worth has not paled since it first saw the light of day in 1934.The original words of Benjamin Graham and David Dodd--put to paper not long after the disastrous Stock Market Crash of 1929--still have the mesmerizing qualities of rigorous honesty and diligent scrutiny, the same riveting power of disciplined thought and determined logic that gave the work its first distinction and began its illustrious career. The words you will read here are eloquent. Not only a financial genius and a man of high repute for honorable dealings, Graham was a man of letters invited to teach in the literature department at Columbia University (as well as in the economics and philosophy departments). But this reproduction is far more than a historical curiosity, an interesting object, and a delightful read. It presents the original Graham/Dodd method of investing--told in their own words as they first described it in the 1930s.What exactly is this method that has drawn such longterm devotion in the notably fickle reaches of Wall Street?Graham and Dodd were Wall Street's first bargain shoppers. In this book they first explain their methods for locating bonds and stocks "which are selling well below the levels apparently justified by a careful analysis of the relevant facts." In this book, they tell you precisely how to find these undervalued securities and analyze those "relevant facts."Are these methods still practical and usable today? The great fortunes created by value investors Warren Buffett, Mario Gabelli, John Neff, Michael Price, and John Bogle testify that they certainly are.In their preface to this book, Graham and Dodd write that they hope their work "will stand the test of the ever enigmatic future." There is no doubt that it has. This distinctively wrought book is a careful reproduction of the 1934 edition, containing every word of the original.

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Theory and Empirical Research in Social Entrepreneurship
The editors of this book have put together a volume that advances research on and deepens the understanding of social entrepreneurship in a number of ways. First, the volume offers a model of social entrepreneurship that bridges economics and sociology. Second, the approach taken expands our understanding of the broader phenomenon without compromising attention to detail. Third, the book also illustrates the usefulness of action research as a means of simultaneously intervening to create social and economic value and collecting data to test theory. All in all, this book represents an excellent resource for scholars; the literature review alone is worth acquiring it, let alone the other sections on social exchange theory, action research methodology, and philanthropic finance. Because of its practice orientation, this book is also a good resource for policy makers who want fresh thinking and evidence-based approaches to policy.'- Gideon D. Markman, Colorado State University, US'Social entrepreneurship has emerged as an academic field, due to growing interest among students, academics, and policymakers in understanding the antecedents and consequences of these activities. Unfortunately, there has been no comprehensive collection of state-of-the-art theoretical and empirical research on this topic. This timely and important book fills this gap, by effectively synthesizing the burgeoning interdisciplinary literature on social entrepreneurship. Given growing interest in social entrepreneurship, the usefulness of this book to academics, entrepreneurs, and policymakers will not diminish over time.'- Donald S. Siegel, University at Albany, SUNY, USScholars and policy makers have long recognized entrepreneurship as a powerful engine of economic growth. There is clear evidence, however, that when it comes to social entrepreneurship, policy attention has not been matched by growth in scholarly research. This volume illustrates the type of empirical effort that must take place for the field to advance. The authors review the latest research in the field and then address the many challenges - heterogeneous institutions, geographies and cultures, fast evolving practices, the lack of reliable large datasets, and fragmented theory building that have hampered the development of this research. In many ways, the fundamental questions relating to the rationale and definitions of social entrepreneurship are still very much a work in progress. The main characteristics emerging from the theoretical and empirical discussions in this volume exemplify such complexity. This volume will inspire future researchers to pursue cross-disciplinary theory building, with the aim of building on what we already know and resolving what remains controversial. It will also help researchers think creatively about how their work can inform practice and policy making through the initial design of the research model. This book offers an empirical approach to social entrepreneurship, that researchers, students and policy makers will find invaluable.Contributors: A.-K. Casemate Publishers In the Shadows of Victory II: America’S Forgotten Military Leaders, the Spanish-American War to World War II
The history of the United States is peppered with extraordinary military leaders. Fate has enshrined an exceptional few in the public’s collective consciousness while sometimes ignoring others often equally as deserving, relegating them to footnotes at best. Though the nation owes them considerable debts, there are many examples of men whose singular leadership is now little remembered or forgotten completely. This volume covers leaders “in the shadows” during the four major conflicts the United States engaged in from the end of the 19th century to the middle years of the 20th: the Spanish-American War, the Philippine Insurrection, World War I, and World War II. It tells the stories of more than 20 individuals and chronicles their activities through conflagrations spanning five decades. To enable readers to put these exploits into proper context, each chapter traces the roots of the conflict covered and discusses the paths that led to America’s involvement. Throughout the book, examples are also noted of leaders whose major renown is associated with a specific war—John J. Pershing, America’s towering military figure during World War I, for example—who also rendered exemplary though largely forgotten service during a different conflict (in Pershing’s case, the Philippine Insurrection). Of special interest to many audiences may be the commentaries regarding the World War I services of officers such as Eisenhower, Marshall, Patton, and Bradley—an aspect of their long military careers overshadowed by their World War II renown and too often minimized in consequence. The book also features brief biographies of officers whose contributions, while less consequential on the world stage than those of colleagues chronicled elsewhere in these pages, are nonetheless deserving of far more recognition than has thus far been accorded them. Reviews for In the Shadows of Victory: America's Forgotten Military Leaders 1776-1876: "...a valuable addition to the history of American military leaders because of its viewpoint. I highly recommend this book to students of history and military history, especially American military history. It is a necessary addition to the libraries of all such students and the public at large." -Michael F. Dilley "...a welcome addition to popular writing on military history... both informative and a pleasure to read. The individual narratives are well structured, carefully researched and nicely written. ...I would recommend it to those who wish to get new perspectives on interesting chapters in American history. Also to those who simply like a good story well told...an excellent book, well worth reading – even for those who don’t particularly like military history. I had the privilege of serving with Tom Phillips while on active duty. I got to know him as a superb officer. And he may well turn out to be an even better writer. " - Raymond E. Franck Brig Gen, USAF Retired "...well written prose...being reminded of and reading about these officers' achievements is an enjoyable experience." -Journal of America's Military Past

ACC Art Books Jacqueline Groag: Textile & Pattern Design: Wiener Werkstätte to American Modern
Jacqueline Groag was probably the most influential textile designer in Britain in the post Second World War era. Although originally Czech, she studied textile and pattern design in Austria in the 1920s. During the late twenties and early thirties she designed textiles for the Wiener Werkstatte in Vienna and subsequently designed and produced unique hand printed lengths of fabrics for many of the leading Parisian fashion houses, including Chanel, Lanvin, Worth, Schiaparelli and Paul Poiret. She was awarded a gold medal for textile design at the Milan Triennale in 1933 and another gold medal for printed textiles at the Paris World Fair in 1937. Jacqueline was not only a serious and highly respected contender in the field of textile and pattern design but, with her husband, the Modernist architect Jacques Groag, was also deeply immersed in the intellectual life of Vienna. In 1938 the sophisticated world of Jacques and Jacqueline was brutally shattered when the Anschluss, the political unification of Austria and Germany, occurred and the German army entered Vienna. Faced with the actuality of the Nazi terror the Groags, who were Jewish, fled to Czechoslovakia and their home city of Prague. After a brief respite they were once more forced to flee in 1939, this time to London. On their arrival in England they were welcomed and championed by leading members of the British design fraternity, amongst whom were Sir Gordon Russell, the doyen of British architects Sir Charles Reilly and Jack Pritchard, founder of the modernist design company, Isokon. Much of the Contemporary style of the textiles and wallpapers shown at the 1951 Festival of Britain were heavily indebted to Jacqueline's influential designs of the 1940s. Many examples of her work were featured prominently at the Festival and from then on she became a major influence on pattern design internationally. She developed a large client group in the United States during the fifties and sixties, amongst whom were Associated American Artists, Hallmark Cards and American Greetings Ohio. In the later 1950s and throughout the 1960s she became increasingly involved with Sir Misha Black and the Design Research Unit (D.R.U.), working on the interiors for boats and planes and trains, particularly the design of textiles and plastic laminates for BOAC and British Rail. One of her last commissions from Misha Black, in the mid-seventies was a distinctive moquette for London Transport, for seating on both buses and tube trains. Her work and influence did not just extend to the large corporations and exclusive couturiers but was familiar to the general public through stores and companies such as John Lewis, Liberty of London, David Whitehead, Edinburgh Weavers, Sandersons, Warerite and Formica. Her remarkable achievement finally received public recognition in 1984 when, at the age of 81, she was made an R.D.I. - a Royal Designer for Industry - the ultimate accolade for any designer in Britain.

Cornerstone Killing For Company: The No. 1 bestseller behind the ITV drama ‘Des’
The definitive story of the Dennis Nilsen case featured in BBC's The Nilsen Tapes, and the book behind ITV's Des, starring David Tennant***WINNER OF THE GOLD DAGGER AWARD FOR CRIME NON-FICTION and THE NUMBER ONE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER***__________________Dennis Nilsen, who died in May 2018, admitted to killing at least 15 people before his arrest in 1983. This ground-breaking criminal study of his killings was written with Nilsen's full cooperation, resulting in a fascinating - and horrifying - portrait of the man who worshipped death. In February 1983, residents of Muswell Hill had been plagued by blocked drains. When a plumber was called to investigate, he discovered a large blockage of biological material. To his horror, it appeared to be formed of human flesh and bones. The next day, local resident Dennis Nilsen was arrested.'Are we talking about one body or two?' a detective asked. Nilsen replied 'Fifteen or sixteen, since 1978. I'll tell you everything.' Within days he had confessed to fifteen gruesome murders over a period of four years. His victims, mostly young gay men at a time when society cared little for them, had been overlooked. Killing for Company is a unique study of a murderer's mind, essential reading for true crime aficionados.__________________'You really have to read this extraordinary book to get a full flavour of the weirdness of Nilsen and his crimes' SUNDAY TIMES'A seminal look into the criminal mind' DAILY MAIL'Brian Masters has given us a full, well-ordered, dispassionate account of Nilsen's life and crimes' THE TIMES'Without any doubt one of the most remarkable, complete and most humanely informative accounts of a murderer's mind ever achieved... the book is far superior to any previous English book of its kind and deserves to serve as a model for all future attempts in this genre' NEW SOCIETY'The book is a perceptive and at times coldly brutal assessment of Nilsen's psychology' MIRROR'A comprehensive and compelling account' FINANCIAL TIMES'Brian Masters can rest assured that the job he undertook with such obvious doubts was one worth doing' SPECTATOR'Probably the best thing of its kind since In Cold Blood . . . a classic study in criminal mentality' YORKSHIRE POST'Killing For Company must stand as one of the most remarkable and accurate accounts ever written of the singular relationship between a mass murderer and a society . . . a bloody masterpiece.' Icon Books How Iceland Changed the World: The Big History of a Small Island
'A joyously peculiar book' - The New York Times'A fascinating insight into Icelandic culture and a fresh perspective on her global influence. Warning: may well make readers wish they were Icelandic, too.' - Helen Russell, author of The Year of Living DanishlyThe untold story of how one tiny island in the middle of the Atlantic has shaped the world for centuries. The history of Iceland began 1,200 years ago, when a frustrated Viking captain and his useless navigator ran aground in the middle of the North Atlantic. Suddenly, the island was no longer just a layover for the Arctic tern. Instead, it became a nation whose diplomats and musicians, sailors and soldiers, volcanoes and flowers, quietly altered the globe forever. How Iceland Changed the World takes readers on a tour of history, showing them how Iceland played a pivotal role in events as diverse as the French Revolution, the Moon Landing, and the foundation of Israel. Again and again, one humble nation has found itself at the frontline of historic events, shaping the world as we know it - How Iceland Changed the World paints a lively picture of just how it all happened.'Egill Bjarnason has written a delightful reminder that, when it comes to countries, size doesn't always matter. His writing is a pleasure to read, reminiscent of Bill Bryson or Louis Theroux. He has made sure we will never take Iceland for granted again.' A.J. Jacobs, New York Times bestselling author of Thanks a Thousand and The Year of Living Biblically 'Bjarnason's intriguing book might be about a cold place, but it's tailor-made to be read on the beach.' - New Statesman 'Egill Bjarnason places Iceland at the center of everything, and his narrative not only entertains but enlightens, uncovering unexpected connections.' Andri Snær, author of On Time and Water 'Icelander Egill Bjarnason takes us on a high-speed, rough-and-tumble ride through 1,000-plus years of history-from the discovery of America to Tolkien's muse, from the French Revolution to the NASA moonwalk, from Israel's birth to the first woman president-all to display his home island's mind-opening legacy.' Nancy Marie Brown, author of The Real Valkyrie and The Far Traveller'I always assumed the history of Iceland had, by law or fate, to match the tone of an October morning: dark, gray, and uninviting to most mankind. This book challenges that assumption, and about time. Our past, much like the present, can be a little fun.' Jón Gnarr, former mayor of Reykjavík and author of The Pirate and The Outlaw 'How Iceland Changed the World is not only surprising and informative. It is amusing and evocatively animates a place that I have been fascinated with for most of my life. Well worth the read!' - Jane Smiley, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of A Thousand Acres'An entertaining, offbeat (and pleasingly concise) history of the remote North Atlantic nation ... perfect for a summer getaway read' - The Critic

Springer-Verlag New York Inc. Does Truth Matter?: Democracy and Public Space
The claim once made by philosophers of unique knowledge of the essence of humanity and society has fallen into disrepute. Neither Platonic forms, divine revelation nor metaphysical truth can serve as the ground for legitimating social and political norms. On the political level many seem to agree that democracy doesn’t need foundations. Nor are its citizens expected to discuss the worth of their comprehensive conceptions of the good life. According to Rawls, for example, we have to accept that “politics in a democratic society can never be guided by what we see as the whole truth (…)”. (1993: 243) And yet we still call upon truth when we participate in defining the basic structure our society and argue why our opinions, beliefs and preferences need to be taken seriously. We do not think that our views need to be taken into account by others because they are our views, but because we think they are true. If in a democratic society citizens have to deal with the challenge of affirming their claims as true, we need to analyse the precise relationship between truth and democracy. Does truth matter to democracy and if so, what is the place of truth in democratic politics? How can citizens affirm the truth of their claims and accept - at the same time - that their truth is just one amongst many? Our book centers on the role of the public sphere in these pressing questions. It tries to give a comprehensive answer to these questions from the perspective of the main approaches of contemporary democratic theory: deliberative democracy, political pragmatism and liberalism. A confrontation of these approaches, will result in a more encompassing philosophical understanding of our plural democracy, which – in this era of globalization – is more complex than ever before. Because a good understanding of the function, meaning and shortcomings of the public sphere is essential to answering these questions, a good deal of the book addresses these issues. Historically, after all, the idea that citizens have to engage each other in discussion in order to determine the structure and goals of society, is connected to the rational ideal of a public sphere where conflicting views can be expressed, formed, and transformed. But hasn’t the collective decision making in which everyone participates on an equal footing turned out to be a deceptive ideal or a simple illusion? Not every individual in society has equal access to the podium. Furthermore, power, being an inevitable feature of the public sphere, seems to permanently endanger its democratic value. Moreover, the existence of this sphere depends on a specific ethos and particular public spaces where citizens are called upon to present themselves as citizens, as people taking responsibility for their society. It is not clear whether this ethos and these spaces exist at all, and if so, if they preserved their ascribed capacity for constituting ‘democratic’ truth? By answering these questions we expect to deepen our understanding of the relation between truth and democracy.

The new novel from the author of the highly acclaimed The Butchers of Berlin, soon to be a TV seriesBerlin, July 1944, a world of illicit jazz clubs, sexually generous young women, suspect art dealers, last-ditch zealots and a city defined by crumbling infrastructure, advanced terror, dirty secrets and deep politics — and then there is August Schlegel, caught askance in a web of totalitarian mayhem.Everybody knows what happened on 20 July: Führer Adolf Hitler miraculously survived an assassination attempt when a bomb failed to kill him. Schlegel, a reluctant employee of the Gestapo, finds himself in the foolhardy position of questioning the official version, knowing it is the last thing he should be thinking. Was it a propaganda stunt, or a deception or was something more extreme going on, perhaps a cover-up connected to the mysterious burning down of a Berlin clinic? A deadly political dance takes Schlegel all the way up to Party Secretary Martin Bormann, the Chancellory’s sinister ‘black pope’.Information is controlled, informers are everywhere, secrecy remains the cornerstone of the regime, yet someone appears interested in digging up a carefully buried scandal in the Führer’s past private life, an incestuous affair with his young niece that ended mysteriously in 1931. Rumours circulate of a ‘Hitler confession’.Trapped in a kingdom of lies, Schlegel discovers the blighted present and a censored past are connected in ways he could never have imagined. The niece’s tragic end is intimately bound up with the fate of his long-lost father, whom Schlegel had always believed absconded to Argentina and died there, until he finds a private 1925 edition of Mein Kampf, dedicated to ‘Anton Schlegel’, signed, ‘In eternal gratitude, Adolf Hitler.’The identity of Schlegel’s father — and whether he is still alive and operating as a secret puppet master — becomes inseparable from the enigma of a shapeshifting Führer, going back to the early days when he was known to Anton Schlegel as Herr Wolf.Questioning the official version of events, Chris Petit offers a dazzling reinterpretation of history, showing how the deeper secret truths invariably turn out to be personal.Praise for Chris Petit: 'No denying the book's power' Nick Rennison, Sunday Times ‘The real skill of this rigorous, disturbing novel lies in the way Petit steadily and unsensationally allows his protagonists to discover the full horror of the hellhole they are in’ Guardian 'One of Britain's most visionary writers' David Peace 'Powerful evocation of a city living in terror' Sunday Times Crime Club 'Ambitious, darkly atmospheric' The Times 'Hugely impressive and highly readable; in the tradition of Thomas Harris's The Silence of the Lambs' Financial Times 'Ferocious invention marks this novel out as special' The Edge 'Ambitious and intelligent' Times 'Puts Petit in the first rank' Metro 'A zigzagging narrative as byzantine an blackly pessemistic as late James Ellroy' Independent on Sunday 'An example of the genre near its best. Bradt Travel Guides Britain's Best Small Hills: A guide to wild walks, short adventures, scrambles, great views, wild camping & more
Hot on the success of Wilderness Weekends, one of the top selling guides in 2015, award-winning travel writer Phoebe Smith returns with more great outdoor experiences tailored not just for the hard-core wilderness enthusiast but for novices and newbie hillwalkers alike. Take a friend, or take the kids - or both! - and climb one of Phoebe's favourite hills. There are 60 of them detailed in this easy-to-follow guide which champions a new easy-access approach to hillwalking. With 20 hills each in England, Wales and Scotland, from just 120 metres to a manageable 609 metres, and from Cornwall to the Scottish Highlands, there's bound to be a hill for you. 'When it comes to mountains society seems to be obsessed with height' says Phoebe Smith. 'But those who shun peaks based on measurement are truly missing out. Following on from the success of Wilderness Weekends, people are always asking me where they can take a friend, partner or young child that will help convince them that the outdoors - and hills - are worth the effort. Answering that need is this book, it's all about minimum effort for maximum results.' Each walk also includes tips on safety, kit, weather, walking responsibly, maps, tackling hills sensibly, and taking children, friends and reluctant walkers. For some walks there's also 'Added Adventure' - caves, ruins or a background story for example. Britain is home to hundreds of hills, neglected because they don't quite measure up, so here we showcase 60 of the very best. 'Who wouldn't want to experience some of the best views in Britain for minimal effort?' asks Phoebe Smith. 'Don't believe us? Walk this way!' With Britain's Best Small Hills, discover not only where to walk, but also curious facts and places, such as one of the best small hills with a café at the top, the hill where Captain Cook became inspired to travel, the only Wainwright the man himself couldn't summit, and the Welsh peaks where the rocks that form Stonehenge come from. Phoebe Smith knows good mountains. For over 10 years she's been exploring Britain's extensively and has written about them in a range of magazines and newspapers in the UK, USA, Canada and Australia as well as being the author of 7 books - all on the British wilderness and the joys of camping. In addition to writing Phoebe has frequently appeared on radio and TV talking wild camping, travel and women in the outdoors. In 2014 she became the first woman to camp at all the extreme points of mainland Britain on consecutive nights - these included the highest, lowest, northernmost, southernmost, easternmost and westernmost points of the country, also becoming the first person to include the centre of Britain in her quest. In 2015 and 2016 she was shortlisted for the National Adventure Awards in the Inspiring Others category. In 2016 she was named an Ordnance Survey #GetOutside Champion for her work encouraging everyone to have adventures in the UK.

You really can't go home again. Tait Logan is proud of the life she's built for herself. Despite her world-shattering divorce, not having any genuine connections with other humans apart from her sister Ava, and the fact that the remainder of her family is estranged from her life, she's happy . . . happy-adjacent, at least. She's rebuilt herself through her photography; her dream career, the one thing she does still have. When that career contracts her to do an assignment on her estranged family's home, Logan Range - a now famous ranch functioning as the setting for a popular TV show - she's left with no choice but to agree. It's only a six-week assignment, after all. She has no plans to set down roots, or get to know the family that, seemingly, has had no interest in a relationship with her since her parents' divorce when she was seven. Henry Marcum is a cowboy who has dedicated his life to the Logan family and to their ranch. He owes them for raising him, rescuing him, and giving him purpose . . . He also owes them for every hardship he's inadvertently brought their way. So, when Tait Logan shows up after 20 years of near total silence, he takes it upon himself to protect the people he knows and loves. It's a rocky start when Tait and Henry first collide; he is naturally wary of her intentions, and she is more than perturbed by their literal collision - which results in her broken camera, during her first night on location, no less. But as the pair get to know each other better, they're thrown off balance time and time again by their growing feelings, and by the story of the Logan family as it becomes increasingly less clear from their perspectives........................Praise for Tarah DeWitt:'It's everything I look for in a romance, deftly blending heart, humor, and the perfect amount of angst' AMY LEA 'Pure romance catnip and a master class in yearning. Archaeopress CAA2015. Keep The Revolution Going: Proceedings of the 43rd Annual Conference on Computer Applications and Quantitative Methods in Archaeology
This volume brings together all the successful peer-reviewed papers submitted for the proceedings of the 43rd conference on Computer Applications and Quantitative Methods in Archaeology that took place in Siena (Italy) from March 31st to April 2nd 2015. Altogether, within the four days of the conference 280 papers were presented in 48 sections divided into ten macro topics, 113 posters, 7 roundtables and 12 workshops. That number, in itself, has prompted a thought or two. Above all it says that CAA is very much alive and kicking, that it is in robust good health, and that it remains a wholly relevant force in the scientific community, fully engaged with the questions of the day, and a continuing focal point for the profession. All of that speaks well for the motto of CAA 2015: KEEP THE REVOLUTION GOING. Although the significance of the motto is obvious, it is worth some thoughts. Few would deny that in the past 30 years or so, digital technologies have profoundly revolutionised archaeology – in the office and laboratory, in the field and in the classroom. The progressive introduction of digital techniques in the archaeological process has of course led to a general increase in efficiency. But perhaps more importantly it has provided a spur to the discussion of methodology and through that has strongly influenced not only the way we go about things but also the outcomes that we have been able to achieve. The pioneering phase in the application of digital techniques in archaeological research has clearly been fruitful and today computer applications such as GIS, databases, remote sensing and spatial analysis as well as virtual and cyber archaeology are deeply embedded within our universities. This is all good, of course, but we must not assume that the task has been completed. An intrinsic revolutionary instinct towards technological development has been awakened. But it will only survive by virtue of the results that it brings about. Or using the words of our Chairman Prof Gary Lock: ‘Computers not only change the way we do things, but more importantly they change the way we think about what we do and why we do it’. The general thrust of this statement can be summed up and reinforced by recalling a quote from the philosopher Don Ihde, who has argued we should never forget that all technologies should be regarded as ‘cultural instruments’, which as well as strategies and methodologies implemented in our researches are also ‘non-neutral’. So KEEP THE REVOLUTION GOING! is a motto that lays stress on the need to maintain innovation in archaeology through technological advances. But innovation must have at its root the fostering of critical thought and the framing of new archaeological questions. So there is much work still to be done, and fresh challenges to be faced in the months, years and decades ahead. -from the introduction by Stefano Campana and Roberto Scopigno

Bunker Hill Publishing Inc Under the Wild Ginger: A Simple Guide to the Wisdom of Wonder
Do you remember how it felt when, as a child, you first discovered some little creature or flower you'd never seen before and when, moved beyond speech, all you could manage was a breathless wow? That little whisper, that crystalline moment of pure wonder, is what Under the Wild Ginger is about. You can reclaim the magical in your hectic life. You'll learn how to open both your senses and your spirit to your surroundings, how to notice and celebrate the countless small miracles that await, often right under your nose. The book introduces the concept of seeing generously. It suggests that, while sensing may seem a kind of acquisition, it's really as much about giving as taking--letting go agendas and schedules; surrendering cell phones and computers; committing your time; applying your imagination; and, above all, simply paying attention. Giving something of yourself to the process of perception restores the curiosity and joie de vivre each of us possessed naturally as a child but which got buried in layer upon layer of adult structure, stress, and cynicism. Under the Wild Ginger is a book to enjoy in quiet moments by yourself, to give to kindred spirits, and, perhaps most importantly, to share with your children and grandchildren as a guidebook to journeys of wonder you'll undertake together. Under the Wild Ginger is a collection of evocative reflections which gently, compellingly urge the reader to reclaim the wonder and wisdom of childhood. Part nature walk, part self-reflection, part spirit quest, it inspires uninhibited curiosity and enthusiasm for small things, those small, wonderful things so often hidden to first glances like the exquisite flower beneath the leaves of the wild ginger. Through his patient probing Jeffrey Willius shows us how, for each layer of our perceptual, emotional and spiritual inattentiveness we're willing to shed. Nature, in return, sheds one layer of her mystery.ENDORSEMENTSA lovely meditation on what makes life worth living. --Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods and The Nature PrincipleThis is one of those rare books that can make you rethink how you see the world. --Richard Leider, author of The Power of Purpose; Senior Fellow, University of Minnesota's Center for Spirituality and HealingA welcome invitation to see the world through new eyes. --Marti Erickson, cofounder, Children & Nature NetworkA book I want to sit with in the woods or in my garden and savor; warmhearted, wise, uplifting, healing--simply enchanting! --Robin Easton, author of Naked in Eden: My Adventures and Awakening in the Australian RainforestThese reflections inspire us to keep our childlike wonder alive in all we do--to pause, listen and look deeply, to never stop asking questions. --Ann Bancroft, polar explorer, teacher and authorA delightful, thoughtful read that will have you earmarking page after page for future reference. --Greg Lais, Executive Director, Wilderness InquiryThis book nourishes the soul. --Meg Pier, travel writer and photographer

Baker Publishing Group After "I Believe" – Everyday Practices for a Vibrant Faith
Pastor and author James Emery White leads his church and his life with a singular mission: to turn spiritual explorers into fully devoted followers of Christ. The obvious first step in this process is for someone to cross the line of faith--to say, "I believe." That was the heart behind his book Christianity for People Who Aren't Christians. But what comes after "I believe" is equally important, and it's the way someone truly becomes a fully devoted follower of Christ. This manual for discipleship takes new Christians through the basics of growing in the faith and connecting with the church, including - prioritizing Bible study - developing a regular prayer life - spending quiet time with God - plugging into the life of a local church - experiencing God in worship - finding ways to serve others - being faithful with finances - and more A perfect resource for pastors and ministry leaders to offer to the new believers in their midst, After "I Believe" is a solid foundation for anyone seeking to build a vibrant Christian life. "James Emery White has done a masterful job of explaining discipleship for new and seasoned believers alike. Often the great books on discipleship are deep but inaccessible. Others are easy to read but lack depth. Jim takes a wealth of knowledge and insight on the essentials of Christian discipleship and makes them wonderfully easy to understand but deep enough to authentically help you."--Carey Nieuwhof, leadership author, podcaster, and founding pastor of Connexus Church in Barrie, Ontario "Living a life with Christ is not a onetime commitment. White reminds us it is a lifetime of intentional choices and disciplined practices that help us in our desire to be followers of Jesus."--Suzanne Stabile, author of The Path between Us, coauthor of The Road Back to You, and host of The Enneagram Journey podcast "I have long loved the writings of James Emery White for his unique insights into the Christian faith and his knack for unraveling complex issues. Now he offers us an updated, refreshing guide for following Jesus in a confusing and sometimes hostile world. After "I Believe" is a practical resource for spiritual growth. Compellingly straightforward, this book will help you align yourself to biblical truth to effect real life-change. Jim's chapter on prayer alone makes this book worth buying. If you want to inject your Christian life with a good dose of adventure and wonder, then you'll want to read this book."--Skip Heitzig, pastor of Calvary Church in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and author of The Bible from 30,000 Feet "In After "I Believe," James Emery White combines a brilliant understanding of profound biblical truths with a heart to love and lead people toward a lifesaving relationship with Jesus. It lights the way for anyone seeking to take that next step in living life to the fullest as God intended."--Santiago "Jimmy" Mellado, president and CEO of Compassion International

WW Norton & Co The Complete Short Stories of James Purdy
The publication of The Complete Short Stories of James Purdy is a literary event that marks the first time all of James Purdy’s short stories—fifty-six in number, including seven drawn from his unpublished archives—have been collected in a single volume. As prolific as he was unclassifiable, James Purdy was considered one of the greatest—and most underappreciated—writers in America in the latter half of the twentieth century. Championed by writers as diverse as Dame Edith Sitwell, Gore Vidal, Paul Bowles, Tennessee Williams, Carl Van Vechten, John Cowper Powys, and Dorothy Parker, Purdy’s vast body of work has heretofore been relegated to the avant-garde fringes of the American literary mainstream. His unique form and variety of style made the Ohio-born Purdy impossible to categorize in standard terms, though his unique, mercurial talent garnered him a following of loyal readers and made him—in the words of Susan Sontag—“one of the half dozen or so living American writers worth taking seriously." Purdy’s journey to recognition came with as much outrage and condemnation as it did lavish praise and lasting admiration. Some early assessments even dismissed his work as that of a disturbed mind, while others acclaimed the very same work as healing and transformative. Purdy's fiction was considered so uniquely unsettling that his first book, Don't Call Me by My Right Name, a collection of short stories all reprinted in this edition, had to be printed privately in the United States in 1956, after first being published in England. Best known for his novels Malcolm, Cabot Wright Begins, Jeremy's Version, and Eustace Chisholm and the Works, Purdy captured an America that was at once highly realistic and deeply symbolic, a landscape filled with social outcasts living in crisis and longing for love, characterized by his dark sense of humor and unflinching eye. Love, disillusionment, the collapse of the family, ecstatic longing, sharp inner pain, and shocking eruptions of violence pervade the lives of his characters in stories that anticipate both "David Lynch and Desperate Housewives" (Guardian). In "Color of Darkness," for example, a lonely child attempts to swallow his father's wedding ring; in "Eventide," the anguish of two sisters over the loss of their sons is deeply felt in the summer heat; and in the gothic horror of "Mr. Evening," a young man is hypnotized and imprisoned by a predatory old woman. These stories and many others, both haunting and hilarious, form a canvas of deep desperation and immanent sympathy, as Purdy narrates "the inexorable progress toward disaster in such a way that it's as satisfying and somehow life-affirming as progress toward a happy ending" (Jonathan Franzen). It may have taken over fifty years, but American culture is finally in sync with James Purdy. As John Waters writes in his introduction, Purdy, far from the fringe, has "been dead center in the black little hearts of provocateur-hungry readers like myself right from the beginning."

Rutgers University Press Ending Ageism, or How Not to Shoot Old People
Winner of the MLA Prize for Independent Scholars and the APA's Florence L. Denmark Award for Contributions to Women and Aging When the term “ageism” was coined in 1969, many problems of exclusion seemed resolved by government programs like Social Security and Medicare. As people live longer lives, today’s great demotions of older people cut deeper into their self-worth and human relations, beyond the reach of law or public policy. In Ending Ageism, or How Not to Shoot Old People, award-winning writer and cultural critic Margaret Morganroth Gullette confronts the offenders: the ways people aging past midlife are portrayed in the media, by adult offspring; the esthetics and politics of representation in photography, film, and theater; and the incitement to commit suicide for those with early signs of “dementia.” In this original and important book, Gullette presents evidence of pervasive age-related assaults in contemporary societies and their chronic affects. The sudden onset of age-related shaming can occur anywhere—the shove in the street, the cold shoulder at the party, the deaf ear at the meeting, the shut-out by the personnel office or the obtuseness of a government. Turning intimate suffering into public grievances, Ending Ageism, Or How Not to Shoot Old People effectively and beautifully argues that overcoming ageism is the next imperative social movement of our time. About the cover image: This elegant, dignified figure--Leda Machado, a Cuban old enough to have seen the Revolution--once the center of a vast photo mural, is now a fragment on a ruined wall. Ageism tears down the structures that all humans need to age well; to end it, a symbol of resilience offers us all brisk blue-sky energy. “Leda Antonia Machado” from “Wrinkles of the City, 2012.” Piotr Trybalski / Trybalski.com. A killer at work but a failure in love, Kemi's move is a last-ditch effort to reclaim her social life.A chance meeting with Jonny in business class en route to the U.S. propels former model-turned-flight-attendant Brittany-Rae Johnson into a life of wealth, luxury, and privilege—a life she's not sure she wants—as the object of his unhealthy obsession. And refugee Muna Saheed, who lost her entire family, finds a job cleaning the toilets at Jonny's office as she works to establish her residency in Sweden and, more importantly, seeks connection and a place she can call home.Told through the perspectives of each of the three women, In Every Mirror She's Black is a fast-paced, richly nuanced yet accessible contemporary novel that touches on important social issues of racism, classism, fetishization, and tokenism, and what it means to be a Black woman navigating a white-dominated society.Praise for In Every Mirror She's Black:"In Every Mirror She's Black is a wise and complicated exploration of the lives of three Black women in America and Sweden. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Advocacy and Learning Disability
This book makes a critical case for advocacy in the lives of people with learning difficulties. This can only be applauded.' - Disability & Society'I found this book to be a thoughtful, interesting and challenging read and I would recommend it to anyone working in the field of advocacy or involved in any capacity with people with learning disabilities. It raises many questions about advocacy in all its different forms and asks those of us involved in this field to reflect on our own practice and that of our funding bodies. It also challenges and invites reflection on prevailing attitudes towards learning disability more generally and the way in which services are provided. Finally it leaves the reader in no doubt of the benefit and necessity of advocacy services, to ensure that people with learning disabilities are able to have their voices heard and their needs understood and met.'-The British Journal of Developmental Disabilities'This is designed for advocacy practitioners and staff working in agencies who come into contact with advocacy services. It is aimed at more experienced practitioners, and service planners, who are serious about developing effective advocacy services within a social inclusion framework.'- Care and Health magazine'This book continues to raise questions about advocacy throughout. It asks questions of those who are advocates and those who have the duty of funding such services. It is a very thoughtful and practical collection of essays on a whole range of issues and ranges, and seeks to provide, some answers. In addition to all this, it is very readable and provides a quite comprehensive bibliography, which in itself is worth the cost of the book.'- Rostrum'Advocacy and Learning Disability is a sound collection of perspectives with an interesting international flavour. Barry Gray and Robin Jackson have collected insightful contributions from Britain, the USA, New Zealand and Australia to create a useful overview exploring a very wide range of self-advocacy issues directly related to learning disability delivery.'-The British Journal of Special EducationAdvocacy is a critically important element in the development of effective services for people with a learning disability. It is seen by many as the critical link between theory and practice in creating a truly inclusive society. This book presents an in-depth examination of the historical, legal and philosophical contexts within which advocacy services have developed. The kind of professional and practical issues and problems confronting those running and using advocacy services are discussed, and the role of advocacy is examined. Chapters covering advocacy with families and with people with communication difficulties contain helpful information for practitioners. A survey of the development of advocacy services in the USA, Australia and New Zealand provides an international perspective.Practical and informative, Advocacy and Learning Disability will be essential reading for advocacy practitioners and those working in agencies in the statutory and voluntary sectors who come into contact with advocacy services.

Heritage Shell Guide Enterprises Ltd East Yorkshire and York: A Heritage Shell Guide
Discover East Yorkshire and York with this Heritage Shell Guide. Here is an introduction to the towns, villages and buildings of the East Riding of Yorkshire, the City of Kingston upon Hull and the City of York. Written in the tradition of the famous Shell Guides, it is a glorious and insightful delve into the familiar, York and the little-known, East Yorkshire. Shell Guides were the brainchild of John Betjeman in the 1930s when people began to explore the country by car. They were designed to offer a frank and honest view of a county. As well as being an introduction and gazetteer the Heritage Shell Guide Trust has introduced maps and colour illustrations to these legendary guides. As well as York's remarkable heritage, this guide also celebrates East Yorkshire including: Dramatic chalk cliffs near Flamborough teem with bird colonies; The rolling Wolds, much painted by David Hockney; The ghostly marshland landscape of Spurn Head which guards the Humber estuary; Historic buildings of the maritime city of Hull and town of Beverley; York's famed Gothic Cathedral, fortress gates and narrow medieval streets. These are just a few of the highlights of a region just waiting to be explored! Let your Heritage Shell Guide to East Yorkshire and York help you uncover the beauty of this dramatic landscape. Shell County Guides: their history - The original series was the brainchild of John Betjeman. He thought there was a market for a plain-speaking guide - the 1930s was a new era when people began to explore the country by car. So, he approached the head of publicity at Shell, Jack Beddington; Beddington had artistic friends like Rex Whistler and Graham Sutherland who thought Betjeman's plan was excellent. The first Guide was Cornwall in which Betjeman frankly said Newquay had "20th century style...corrugated rows of villas, enormous hotels, flashing shops and Pierrots..." so readers knew what they were getting! His authors were artists, playwrights and academics like Norman Scarfe (Suffolk) who had a great affection for their county. He advised Juliet Smith (Northamptonshire) to pick out the buildings she liked, and "don't be afraid of saying that a place is hideous!" Ultimately the policy was a little gentler: to take the visitor by the hand and show them what was worth seeing in a place. In 1937 Betjeman linked up with John Piper who was erudite, unflappable, calm and business like; they wrote Shropshire together. In 1960 Piper became joint editor and in 1967 editor of the series. His ability to paint buildings with latent emotion was matched only by accomplishment in making stained glass for colleges, churches and cathedrals. But he favoured monochrome for photography which leached interest in the face of colour. Shell ended the series in 1984. One of Piper's favourite photographers, Peter Burton, produced a Shell-style North Yorkshire in 2001. This led to the formation of the Heritage Shell Guide Trust to continue the work Shell so nobly began, now funded by donations.
