Israel acquired sixty-one Dassault Mystere IVA combat aircraft from France that were delivered to the Israeli Air Force from April to September 1956 and were issued to two units: Squadron 101 at Hatzor, in the south, and Squadron 109 at Ramat David, in the north. From 1956 until 1959, and to a lesser extent from 1959 until 1962, the Mystere was the ILAF's cutting-edge interceptor. From 1959, the Mystere's main mission shifted from air-to-air to air-to-ground, as more modern interceptors—Super Mystere from 1959 and Mirage from 1962—entered Israeli Air Force service. At the same time, the Israeli Air Force initiated an effort to introduce an attack aircraft to succeed the Mystere. The Squadron 109 Mystere era therefore covered mostly air-to-air from 1956 until 1962 and mostly air-to-ground from 1962 until 1968.

Those permitted to be awarded included Turkish units, Cossack units, Crimean Tatar units, Auxiliary Police (Schutzmannschaft) Battalions, unarmed auxiliaries (Hilfswilligen, or Hiwis) in German units, and domestic security units in the operations zone. Known for his historical and functional objects made on a foot-powered lathe, Wood keeps the tradition of pole turning alive. The leg-powered process Wood uses results in thousands of solid, round chunks – Cores – that get broken out of the center of the bowl at the last moment. Wood donated 100 Cores, which ranged in size from 2 x 2” to 3 x 4” to The Center for Art in Wood in Philadelphia. The Center sent Cores to two-score artists who agreed to the challenge of reworking them into new pieces of art. In 1728 when he was 29 years old, John Bartram (1699–1777), a third generation Pennsylvania Quaker, bought a 102-acre site in the Philadelphia environs and started developing it into an arboretum that became known as Bartram’s Garden. He began sending seeds and plants to Peter Collinson, a London merchant, and many others after that, in wooden boxes he designed for the trans-Atlantic voyages. When a severe storm felled trees in the historic Garden in 2010, The Center for Art in Wood in Philadelphia challenged artists across the world to create works from the wood that expressed the botanist's voice and dedication. From early December 1941 through much of 1945, many U.S. Navy and U.S. Army Air Force and Army personnel served at joint Brazilian–U.S. bases in the coastal cities of Brazil and on two islands in the Atlantic Narrows between that country and Africa. The U.S. Fourth Fleet, based in Recife, Brazil, and its Fleet Air Wing 16, based at several coastal cities, were there to wage war on Axis Power submarines, surface raiders, and blockade runners. The U-Boats and armed raiders were sinking Allied ships at an alarming rate. The blockade runners were carrying vital war materials to the Axis Powers. Operating against Tito and his partisans in Yugoslavia, Nachtschlachtgruppe 7, and its predecessor units Störkampfstaffel Kroatien and Südost, fought an extraordinary war--one that was different from any other Nachtschlachtgruppe in existence on either the eastern or western fronts. The history of Nachtschlachtgruppe 7 is unbreakably cross-linked with its "sister" unit Nahaufklärungsstaffel Kroatien, who eventually became its 2.Staffel in Autumn 1943. Despite their obsolete equipment--flying the Hs 126, Do 17 and He 46--they fought courageously against Tito's forces until the end of the war.
