University of Exeter Press Letters From The Pyrenees
In 1659, Luis de Haro met with Cardinal Jules Mazarin in the Pyrenees to conclude a peace treaty and marriage agreement that would end over twenty years of war between Spain and France. The hitherto unpublished letters which Haro sent to Philip IV from the peace conference are fascinating to read and offer an account of the negotiations that often diverges radically from what Mazarin reports in his letters to the French court. This edition offers a mix of the original letters and summaries of the letters, as well as numerous explanatory notes and an introduction that sets the peace conference firmly within its historical context. This volume in the Exeter Hispanic Texts series provides the letters in the original Spanish; the Introduction, notes and summaries are in English. It will be of interest to a scholarly readership, especially those concerned with late seventeenth-century Spanish and French history.

Princeton University Press Theory and Reality in Public International Law
This edition of the work regarded as a modern classic in the field of international law corresponds to the third French edition in which the author updates his attempt "to increase the authority of international law by bringing back into it the values upon which it was founded." While this edition remains faithful to the ideas expounded in earlier versions, the author included new currents of thought in judicial practice and doctrine. These relate chiefly to the development of international organization, to the progress of codification, and to the decisions of the International Court of Justice. Originally published in 1968. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Fitzcarraldo Editions It Lasts Forever and Then Its Over
The heroine of the spare and haunting It Lasts Forever and Then It's Over is voraciously alive in the afterlife. Adrift yet keenly aware, she notes every bizarre detail of her new reality. And even if she has forgotten her name and much of what connects her to her humanity, she remembers with an implacable and nearly unbearable longing the place where she knew herself and was knownwhere she loved and was loved. Traveling across the landscapes of time and of space, heading always west, and carrying a dead but laconically opinionated crow in her chest, our undead narrator encounters and loses parts of her body and her self in one terrifying, hilarious, and heartbreaking situation after another. A tale for our dispossessed times, and one of the sharpest and funniest novels of recent years, It Lasts Forever and Then It's Over plumbs mortality and how it changes everything, except possibly love.

Oro Editions Thirteen Ways of Looking at a House
For reasons both obvious and mysterious, even as our cultural and social constructions of domesticity change, the house remains a fundamental site for advancing modern architectural theory and practice: because it accommodates a full diurnal and annual cycle of life, and because it intricately stages ritual and routine, this most private of programs has become a medium of publicity and polemic. Thirteen Ways of Looking at a House both participates in and critiques this contemporary tradition. The reader’s attention in this examination is directed not only to LEVENBETTS’ houses, but to all houses, and all parts of houses — pieces of home and rhetorics of domesticity that show up in our collective memory: from a stolen moment on a staircase in a John Cassavetes film, to the sturdy knife-edged contractor modernism of suburban late to mid-20th century America. Thirteen Ways of Looking at a House is an accessible and universal book — everyone has a sense of home. The book includes 13 texts on domestic pieces that make up the house, comparative diagrams, construction metrics and anecdotes, informal photos, and structural details all in the interest of taking the house apart in order to put it back together.

New Directions Publishing Corporation These Possible Lives
New Directions is proud to present Fleur Jaeggy’s strange and mesmerizing essays about the writers Thomas De Quincey, John Keats, and Marcel Schwob. A renowned stylist of hyper-brevity in fiction, Fleur Jaeggy proves herself an even more concise master of the essay form, albeit in a most peculiar and lapidary poetic vein. Of De Quincey’s early nineteenth-century world we hear of the habits of writers: Charles Lamb “spoke of ‘Lilliputian rabbits’ when eating frog fricassse”; Henry Fuseli “ate a diet of raw meat in order to obtain splendid dreams”; “Hazlitt was perceptive about musculature and boxers”; and “Wordsworth used a buttery knife to cut the pages of a first-edition Burke.” In a book of “blue devils” and night visions, the Keats essay opens: “In 1803, the guillotine was a common child’s toy.” And poor Schwob’s end comes as he feels “like a ‘dog cut open alive’”: “His face colored slightly, turning into a mask of gold. His eyes stayed open imperiously. No one could shut his eyelids. The room smoked of grief.” Fleur Jaeggy’s essays—or are they prose poems?—smoke of necessity: the pages are on fire.

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd International Handbook of Globalization and World Cities
This Handbook offers an unrivaled overview of current research into how globalization is affecting the external relations and internal structures of major cities in the world. By treating cities at a global scale, it focuses on the 'stretching' of urban functions beyond specific place locations, without losing sight of the multiple divisions in contemporary world cities. The book firmly bases city networks in their historical context, critically discusses contemporary concepts and key empirical measures, and analyzes major issues relating to world city infrastructures, economies, governance and divisions. The variety of urban outcomes in contemporary globalization is explored through detailed case studies. Edited by leading scholars of the Globalization and World Cities (GaWC) Research Network and written by over 60 experts in the field, the Handbook is a unique resource for students, researchers and academics in urban and globalization studies as well as for city professionals in planning and policy.Contributors: M. Goose Lane Editions Apron Strings: Navigating Food and Family in France, Italy, and China
Shortlisted, 2018 Taste Canada Awards and 2018 Writers' Federation of New Brunswick Book Award for Non-FictionLonglisted, 2018 RBC Taylor PrizeJan Wong knows food is better when shared, so when she set out to write a book about home cooking in France, Italy, and China, she asked her 22-year-old son, Sam, to join her. While he wasn't keen on spending excessive time with his mom, he dreamed of becoming a chef. Ultimately, it was an opportunity he couldn't pass up.On their journey, Jan and Sam live and cook with locals, seeing first-hand how globalization is changing food, families, and cultures. In southeast France, they move in with a family sheltering undocumented migrants. From Bernadette, the housekeeper, they learn classic French family fare such as blanquette de veau. In a hamlet in the heart of Italy's Slow Food country, the villagers teach them without fuss or fanfare how to make authentic spaghetti alle vongole and a proper risotto with leeks. In Shanghai, they home-cook firecracker chicken and scallion pancakes with the nouveaux riches and their migrant maids, who comprise one of the biggest demographic shift in world history. Along the way, mother and son explore their sometimes-fraught relationship, uniting — and occasionally clashing — over their mutual love of cooking.A memoir about family, an exploration of the globalization of food cultures, and a meditation on the complicated relationships between mothers and sons, Apron Strings is complex, unpredictable, and unexpectedly hilarious.

University of Exeter Press La Quête Du Blé
Having more literary than religious vocation, the young Capuchin monk Venance Dougados was sent on a fund-raising tour in 1786 among the peasants and gentry of the Monts de Lacaune in southern France. He came back with a remarkable work, La Quête du Blé, in verse and prose. The work was original, humorous, with pre-romantic undertones; it brought him much success, but at the same time it aroused the anger of his superiors. Rémy Cazals provides a critical edition of this little-known text accompanied by a biography of its author, who became inflamed by the passions of the Revolution, and who was guillotined in 1794. This title is Volume 101 in the series Exeter French Texts/Textes littéraires. It incldues an introduction and essential notes, all in French.

Boydell & Brewer Ltd The Irish in the Spanish Armies in the Seventeenth Century
Provides a wealth of detail on how "the wild geese" - the Irish who refused to submit to the English - played a significant role in the armies of Spain. It is well-known that many Irishmen who refused to submit to the English in the reigns of Elizabeth and the early Stuart kings, including the famous earls of Tyrone and Tyrconnell, went to fight for the king of Spain, but what they did when they joined the Spanish armies is much less well-known. This book provides a wealth of detail on the activities of the Irish in the Spanish armies in the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It outlines who the Irish soldiers were, how they were recruited and the terms under which they served. It discusses their military roles both in the wars in Flanders between the Spanish and their former Dutch subjects, and, later, in the Hispanic peninsula, showing how the Irish were often employed as elite troops who made significant contributions to major military actions, such as the siege of Breda in 1624. It examines military tactics, explores the politics of the Spanish armies, showing how the Irish fitted in, and discusses how, when the rebellion of 1641 broke out in Ireland, many Irish soldiers returned to Ireland to resume the fight against the English. Eduardo de Mesa completed hisdoctorate at University College Dublin. He is the author of La pacificación de Flandes. Spínola y las campañas de Frisia (1604-1609) (2009), and Discurso Militar del Marqués de Aytona (2008), co-author of La Monarquía de Felipe III (2008), and author of numerous articles, chapters in edited collections, and encyclopedia entries.

Penguin Books Ltd Vanity Fair
William Makepeace Thackeray's Vanity Fair depicts the anarchic anti-heroine Beky Sharpe cutting a swathe through the eligible young men of Europe, set against a lucid backdrop of war and international chaos. This Penguin Classics edition is edited with an introduction and notes by John Carey. No one is better equipped in the struggle for wealth and worldly success than the alluring and ruthless Becky Sharp, who defies her impoverished background to clamber up the class ladder. Her sentimental companion Amelia Sedley, however, longs only for the caddish soldier George. As the two heroines make their way through the tawdry glamour of Regency society, battles - military and domestic - are fought, fortunes made and lost. The one steadfast and honourable figure in this corrupt world is William Dobbin, devoted to Amelia, bringing pathos and depth to Thackeray's gloriously satirical epic of love and social adventure. Set against the background of the Napoleonic wars, Thackeray's 'novel without a hero' is a lively satirical journey through English society, exposing greed, snobbery and pretension. This edition follows the text of Thackeray's revised edition of 1853. John Carey's introduction identifies Vanity Fair as a landmark in the development of European Realism, and as a reflection of Thackeray's passionate love for another man's wife.William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863) was born and educated to be a gentleman, but gambled away much of his fortune while at Cambridge. He trained as a lawyer before turning to journalism. He was a regular contributor to periodicals and magazines and Vanity Fair was serialised in Punch in 1847-8.If you enjoyed Vanity Fair you might like Guy de Maupassant's Bel-Ami, also available in Penguin Classics.'Vanity Fair has strong claims to be the greatest novel in the English language. It is also the only English novel that challenges comparison with Tolstoy's War and Peace'John Carey

Luath Press Ltd The Blockade Runners
Jules Verne is the author of many classic, world-famous novels such as Around the World in 80 Days and Journey to the Centre of the Earth. In this brand-new translation of The Blockade Runners, Verne moves seamlessly between Scotland and the southern states of the US during the American Civil War. With the southern harbours effectively sealed by the North, Scottish industrialist James Playfair must run a daring Federalist blockade of a Charleston harbour in an effort to trade supplies for cotton and to rescue a young girl's father, held prisoner by the Confederates. As the blockade grows tighter, will Playfair risk all to save the man, or will he head back to Scotland in safety with his hold full of precious cotton? The Blockade Runners is a translation of Les Forceurs de Blocus (1871). As a novella, it was originally included along with A Floating City in the first English and French editions.

Firefly Books Ltd Yours, for Probably Always: Martha Gellhorn's Letters of Love and War 1930-1949
'A titan of American letters. It’s high time for Gellhorn to emerge from the shadows of twentieth-century literature into the bright light of mainstream recognition.' The Washington Post Book World. Before email, when long distance telephone calls were difficult and expensive, people wrote letters, often several each day. Today, those letters provide an intimate and revealing look at the lives and loves of the people who wrote them. When the author, Martha Gellhorn, is a brilliant writer who lived an exciting, eventful life, the letters are especially interesting. Martha Gellhorn was a strong-willed, self-made, modern woman whose journalism, and her life, were widely influential at the time and cleared a path for women who came after her. An ardent anti-fascist, she abhorred “objectivity shit” and wrote about real people doing real things with intelligence and passion. She is most famous, to her enduring exasperation, as Ernest Hemingway’s third wife. Long after their divorce, her short tenure as “Mrs. Hemingway” from 1940 to 1945 invariably eclipsed her writing and, consequently, she never received her full due. Gellhorn’s work and personal life attracted a disparate cadre of political and celebrity friends, among them, Sylvia Beach, Ingrid Bergman, Leonard Bernstein, Norman Bethune, Robert Capa, Charlie Chaplin, Chiang Kai-shek, Madame Chiang, Colette, Gary Cooper, John Dos Passos, Dorothy Parker, Maxwell Perkins, Eleanor and Franklin D. Roosevelt, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Orson Welles, H.G. Wells: the people who made history in her time and beyond. Yours, for Probably Always is a curated collection of letters between Gellhorn and the extraordinary personalities that were her correspondents in the most interesting time of her life. Through these letters and the author’s contextual narrative, the book covers Gellhorn’s life and work, including reporting for Harry Hopkins and America’s Federal Emergency Relief Administration in the 1930s, newspaper and magazine reportage during the Spanish Civil War, World War II and the Vietnam War, and her time with Hemingway and General Gavin late in the war, and her many loves and affairs. Gellhorn’s fiction of the time sold well: The Trouble I’ve Seen (1936)—her Depression-Era stories based on the FERA activities, with an introduction by H.G. Wells; A Stricken Field (1940)—a novel inspired by the German-Jewish refugee crisis and set in 1938 Czechoslovakia; The Heart of Another (1941)—stories edited by Maxwell Perkins; and The Wine of Astonishment (1948), her novel about Dachau, the liberation of which she reported for Collier’s. Gellhorn’s life, reportage, fiction and correspondence reveal her passionate advocacy of social justice and her need to tell the stories of “the people who were the sufferers of history.” Renewed interest in her life makes this new collection, packed with newly discovered letters and pictures, fascinating reading.

Michelin Editions des Voyages Streetwise Budapest Map - Laminated City Center Street Map of Budapest, Hungary: City Plan
REVISED 2023 Streetwise Budapest Map is a laminated city center map of Budapest, Hungary. The accordion-fold pocket size travel map has an integrated metro map including lines & stations. Coverage includes: Main Budapest Map Front 1: 17,000 Main Budapest Map Back 1:11,000 Budapest City Center Map 1:11,000 Millennium City Center Map 1:17,000 Budapest Metro Map Dimensions: 4" x 8.5" folded, 8.5" x 27" unfolded People say Budapest is the Paris of Central Europe. Maybe that statement is true because it combines a combination of western luxuries, architectural beauty, and cosmopolitan European traditions. But this baroque city is still connected to its Eastern European heritage with the steaming baths, incredibly complex language and lusty cuisine. Budapest straddles a curve in the river Danube which bisects two distinct parts. The east side is known as Pest and the west side is known as Buda, hence Budapest. It’s a very logical, well laid out city. Castle Hill is the premier destination for visitors and contains many of Budapest's most important monuments and museums, and great views of Pest across the blue Danube. Pastel houses lining cobbled streets and stone balustrade overlooks give this citadel a fairy tale quality, while bullet holes from the unsuccessful 1956 uprising pockmark many buildings. The main map of Budapest covers a large part of the central city in detail and is fully indexed with hotels, sites, architecture, metro stations and parks. The City Center inset map expands the old city grid and enables you to stroll the old streets and absorb Hungarian history and culture at your leisure. The inset map of Budapest Metro facilitates your travel throughout the city. One example of the importance of on site research: when this Budapest map was first conceived in the early 1990 s we ran into a unique problem with sudden unannounced street name changes. Streets named after heroic Socialist revolutionaries were changed without notice. The streets were renamed after heroes of the Hungarian National Liberation. Other maps who rely on out of date documents for updating still reflect the old street names. Imagine publishing a map and unknowingly using names like Karl Marx Ave. and Lenin Square. Whoops! Fortunately, with our STREETWISE® Budapest Map, we adhered to a policy of physically researching and updating the city, thereby avoiding these sorts of mistakes. Our pocket size map of Budapest is laminated for durability and accordion folding for effortless use. For a selection of the best restaurants and hotels, buy the red MICHELIN Guide Main Cities of Europe. Broadview Press Ltd A Strange Manuscript Found in a Copper Cylinder (1888)
Drifting on a sailing boat off the Canary Islands, four British gentlemen take turns reading a manuscript that they find inside a copper cylinder discovered floating in the Atlantic Ocean. The manuscript recounts Adam More’s adventures after being lost at sea during an Antarctic voyage in 1844 and his life with the Kosekin, a lost civilization living at the South Pole. The values of the Kosekin are opposed to the civilized norm—they love death, abjection, and poverty. Their society may be well suited to their particular evolution, but it is profoundly disconcerting to the narrator, and it is radically contentious to the Victorian gentlemen who read and debate More’s account. This Broadview edition of James De Mille’s classic recreates the format of the posthumous 1888 Harper’s Weekly serial, including 18 original illustrations by Gilbert Gaul. The appendices allow the novel to be seen in terms of other satirical and scientific romance, Antarctic exploration, and contemporary geology. The introduction and notes tap into recent scholarship to bring to life De Mille’s genre innovations and his use of Orientalist and colonialist discourses.

University Press of Kansas Lee Harvey Oswald as I Knew Him
Let us hope that this book, poorly written and disjointed, but sincere, will help to clear up our relationship with our dear, dead friend Lee."" Thus concludes a largely forgotten manuscript appended to Volume XII of the House Select Committee on Assassinations. ""Lee,"" of course, was Lee Harvey Oswald, the man accused of having assassinated President John F. Kennedy in Dallas on November 22, 1963--and whose closest friend, many have argued, was Dallas resident George de Mohrenschildt. For years following Kennedy's assassination there were rumors and assumptions--some started by de Mohrenschildt himself--that this colorful, larger-than-life European émigré possessed a key to understanding Oswald's alleged actions. The reflections presented here, recorded between 1969 and his death in 1977, was de Mohrenschildt's attempt to recover the humanity of a friend he believed had been demonized as simply an ""insane killer."" In a series of recollections about his brief friendship with Oswald and his wife Marina between the fall of 1962 and the spring of 1963, de Mohrenschildt recalls conversations about Lee's time in Minsk, about political issues of the day, particularly Latin America, and the Oswalds' turbulent and troubled marriage. He discusses the assassination and its aftermath, including his lengthy 1964 Warren Commission testimony, appearance on NBC television, and concludes with his own speculations about the possibility of a conspiracy to assassinate Kennedy and the question of Oswald's involvement. Threaded throughout are de Mohrenschildt's reflections on the corrosive effects of his friendship with the Oswalds on his and his wife Jeanne's personal and professional lives, first in 1964 and then echoing right up to the completion of this manuscript in 1976. Deftly edited and annotated by Michael Rinella, whose introduction also supplies critical background information and context, this once unwieldy, grammatically quirky, and eccentrically organized text can now be seen for the valuable biographical, social, and historical document it actually is.

Princeton University Press The Golden Legend: Readings on the Saints
Depicting the lives of the saints in an array of factual and fictional stories, The Golden Legend was perhaps the most widely read book, after the Bible, during the late Middle Ages. It was compiled around 1260 by Jacobus de Voragine, a scholarly friar and later archbishop of Genoa, whose purpose was to captivate, encourage, and edify the faithful, while preserving a vast store of information pertaining to the legends and traditions of the church. In this translation, the first in English of the complete text, William Granger Ryan captures the immediacy of this rich work, which offers an important guide for readers interested in medieval art and literature and, more generally, in popular religious culture. Arranged according to the order of saints' feast days, these fascinating stories are now combined into one volume. This edition also features an introduction by Eamon Duffy contextualizing the work.
