Few American artists have captured painters imaginations with the gripping force of Albert Pinkham Ryder (1847-1917). The brooding spirituality of his works, coupled with formal innovation decades ahead of its time, have long made Ryder a favorite of innovators like Jackson Pollock, Marsden Hartley, and Robert Rauschenberg. And yet, the artist s biography and practices remain elusive. A Wild Note of Longing whose title is taken from a Ryder poem--takes up the challenge, bringing a new generation of scholarship to the most comprehensive collection of Ryder masterworks assembled to date. Ryder is considered a seminal artist for both the late-nineteenth-century Gilded Age and for the emerging modernism of the early twentieth century. This publication presents research from the last ten years including William Agee s recent work on Ryder s influence and context within modernism. New evidence has also debunked some of the historical myths around Ryder, such as the degree of his elusiveness and social eccentricities and the lack of deliberateness with which he experimented with color and luminosity. New perspectives include a deep focus on Ryder from the perspective of his hometown of New Bedford, Massachusetts. This volume includes fifty-five color illustrations from Urs Fischer’s Beds and Problem Paintings show that was exhibited at Gagosian Gallery in Los Angeles from February 23–April 7, 2012. This was the artist’s first major solo exhibition with the gallery. Casa del Herrero—House of the Blacksmith—stands today as one of the most fully developed and intact examples of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture. It was designed and built between 1922 and 1925 as a second house for George Fox Steedman, a St. Louis industrialist. Thought principally to be the work of George Washington Smith, the architect, Steedman himself generated many ideas during the initial design phase that were both a blessing and curse to Smith. Steedman’s vision prevailed, and throughout the decade following the house’s initial completion, he continued to rework both house and garden, engaging the architects Lutah Maria Riggs, Edwards, Plunkett & Howell, and Floyd Brewster, and garden designers Francis T. Underhill and Lockwood de Forest, Jr. The result today is the most magnificent of the California Spanish Colonial Revival-style houses now standing.
