Cannibal/Hannibal Publishers Gideon Kiefer – 3007 A.D.—4897 A.D.
The gifted artist Gideon Kiefer makes his debut with painterly work in this book. Kiefer's inspiration comes from his grandfather's art books that he read as a child, with prints of work by masters such as Rubens, Caravaggio and Repin. He selects and reinterprets details that intrigue him. Small additions, such as handwritten text or small anecdotes, betray a piece of the personal content hidden in each work, just as they expose the artists' growing concerns about the current climate crisis. The text is by cultural journalist Eric Rinckhout. "Gideon Kiefer’s work balances on the cusp between beauty and horror, tradition and trash, sweet memories and apocalyptic visions, encapsulating his unwavering belief in the power of art and the solace of beauty. He wields his brush, waging war against darkness." - Eric Rinckhout Published to accompany an exhibition in Cultuurcentrum de Werft in Geel (Belgium) from 15 January to 17 March 2022. Text in English and Dutch.

Lars Muller Publishers UNStudio Transform
In these rapidly changing times, we are increasingly embracing change and innovation; we deviate, modify, shift and pivot to challenge long-accepted norms. Transformation is everywhere, at all times. Transformation is also the central topic in the architectural profession and the built environment. It can be evidenced in concepts and ideas, in awareness, appearance, form, character, nature or culture. This year, the Zumtobel Group commissioned the international architecture practice UNStudio to create their annual report for 2021/2022, adding to the Austrian lighting company’s unique oeuvre of yearly published art books. As a collaboration with graphic design duo Bloemendaal & Dekkers, this year’s publication presents a design reflection on the theme of transformation. Using illustrations drawn from the work of UNStudio over the past thirty years, the book presents a visual investigation into the creative process, and demonstrates how ideas and concepts are developed by the practice into physical form. Through a similar thought process, the book itself is designed to undergo its own metamorphosis.

Star
"Star" is a book about art. A book about appropiation and public domain. About brand, identity and copyright. It is a book about money. Still and nevertheless ?nevertheless? it is a book with a soul, where children play and run about in their sunday clothes. A book that raises to some cloudy sacred place where only the blessed dwell. In 2013 Nacho García broke the boundaries of his own domestic look into the world with Pulir, a hazardous tour de force against dull fixed parameters of art books and comics. Knowing ?maybe not knowing? he had already walked the path from memes and bedroom epistemology by challenging the trivia stereotypes of the quirk and the mundane, his new book is a heartfelt statement about the politics of raw abstract truisms and platitudes of art. Everyday life, money, celebrities, internet are art forms here, just as hellfire and custom metal logos, becoming res nullius, res communes, res publicae and res universitatis while over two hundred ideas made in heaven

Getty Trust Publications More than One Picture: An Art History of the Hyperimage
In exhibitions, illustrated art books, and classrooms, artworks or their photographic reproductions are arranged as calculated ensembles that have their own importance. In this volume, Felix Thurlemann develops a theory of this type of image use, arguing that with each new gathering of images, an art object is reinterpreted. These hyperimages have played a major role in the history of art since the seventeenth century, and the main actors of the art world are all hyperimage creators. In part because the hyperimage is not permanently available, this interplay of images has been largely unexplored. Through case studies organized within three groups of producers-collectors and curators, art historians, and artists-Thurlemann proposes a theory of the hyperimage, explores the semiotic nature of this plural image use, and discusses the arrangement and interpretation of such pictures in order to illuminate the phenomenon of Western image culture from the beginning of the seventeenth century until today. His analysis of the ways in which images are assembled and associated provides a crucial context for the explosive present-day deployment of images on digital devices.

August Editions Jean-Philippe Delhomme: Artists' Instagrams: The Never Seen Instagrams of the Greatest Artists
The imagined Instagrams of art history’s “influencers,” from Gauguin to Warhol With his sharp-witted illustrations and insightful one-liners, the French illustrator, painter and writer Jean-Philippe Delhomme (born 1959) is a deft observer and loving critic of our contemporary culture. In his latest book, Artists' Instagrams, Delhomme imagines what the masters of modern art would have posted if they had access to Instagram and shared our addiction to the platform. The results are hilarious: Picasso collaborates with a car brand and compares his follower-count with Braque’s; Mondrian paints his IKEA kitchen; Gauguin incites #FOMO with his travel photographs of tantalizing, exoticizing Polynesian nudes. They are all here, from Joseph Beuys to Andy Warhol. Artists' Instagrams: The Never Seen Instagrams of the Greatest Artists is one of the first art books to engage Instagram’s influence in our visual culture (Kim Kardashian’s pioneering efforts notwithstanding). But Artists’ Instagrams is not only an amusing mash-up of high culture and everyone's favorite social media platform; it's a veritable history of modern art through hashtags.

The artist Beatrice Wood, born in 1893, lived and worked until the age of 105. She was known variously as the Mama of Dada and the Queen of Luster. In 1917 she was part of the avant-garde Dada movement in New York. By the mid-1950s she had become a leading practitioner of luster-glazed ceramics. Wood moved from being a debutante to joining one of the most bohemian circles of her day. Her work played with sexuality, but her aesthetic was often more comic than erotic. Now featured in over one hundred museums across the world, Wood is often quoted for her recipe to a long life: “art books, chocolates, and young men.”This book contains a collection of risqué drawings that document an intimate relationship she enjoyed with a married couple, Jack and Rhea Case, in Ojai, California, during the 1950s and 1960s. The collection was later acquired by Betsy Ross Rowland, who has sponsored this limited-edition book to benefit the ceramics educational programs of the nonprofit CFile Foundation.

Private displays photographs of art galleries that Lippy has taken over the past several years. Crucially, these photographs are not of the art housed in said galleries but of the areas that are marked off-limits to visitors. These areas are indeed private, and the book's title ripples throughout the 66-page volume to incantatory effect. Without trespassing, Lippy gestures toward the banal, if not insidious, forces behind the artworks on display: commerce and bureaucracy. His cropped photographs strip the galleries of identifying information, coalescing into an expanse of gatekeeping white space. University of Washington Press A New Middle Kingdom: Painting and Cultural Politics in Late Chosŏn Korea (1700–1850)
Historians have claimed that when social stability returned to Korea after devastating invasions by the Japanese and Manchus around the turn of the seventeenth century, the late Chosŏn dynasty was a period of unprecedented economic and cultural renaissance, in which prosperity manifested itself in new programs and styles of visual art. A New Middle Kingdom questions this belief, claiming instead that true-view landscape and genre paintings were likely adopted to propagandize social harmony under Chosŏn rule and to justify the status, wealth, and land grabs of the ruling class. This book also documents the popularity of art books from China and their misunderstanding by Koreans and, most controversially, Korean enthusiasm for artistic programs from Edo Japan, thus challenging academic stereotypes and nationalistic tendencies in the scholarship about the Chosŏn period. As the first truly interdisciplinary study of Korean art, A New Middle Kingdom points to realities of late Chosŏn society that its visual art seemed to hide and deny. Pluto Press The Brutish Museums: The Benin Bronzes, Colonial Violence and Cultural Restitution
New York Times 'Best Art Books' 2020 'Essential' – Sunday Times 'Brilliantly enraged' - New York Review of Books 'A real game-changer'– Economist Walk into any Western museum today and you will see the curated spoils of Empire. They sit behind plate glass: dignified, tastefully lit. Accompanying pieces of card offer a name, date and place of origin. They do not mention that the objects are all stolen. Few artefacts embody this history of rapacious and extractive colonialism better than the Benin Bronzes - a collection of thousands of metal plaques and sculptures depicting the history of the Royal Court of the Obas of Benin City, Nigeria. Pillaged during a British naval attack in 1897, the loot was passed on to Queen Victoria, the British Museum and countless private collections. The Brutish Museums sits at the heart of a heated debate about cultural restitution, repatriation and the decolonisation of museums. Since its first publication, museums across the western world have begun to return their Bronzes to Nigeria, heralding a new era in the way we understand the collections of empire we once took for granted.

Taschen GmbH Miró
With a career spanning seven decades, Catalan-born Joan Miró (1893–1983) was a polymath giant of modern art, producing masterworks across painting, sculpture, art books, tapestry, and ceramics, and embracing ideologies as varied as Fauvism, Surrealism, Dada, Magic Realism, Cubism, and abstraction. Over the course of his prodigious output, Miró evolved constantly, seeking to eschew categorization and the approval of “bourgeois” art critics as much as he pursued his own dreamlike worlds. Emerging into the public spotlight in the early 1920s, he first experimented with Fauvism and Cubism before developing a distinctive style of symbols and pictograms, arranged in elusive visual narratives, with frequent reference to Catalan life. As his career progressed, Miró moved towards Surrealism, and, despite never fully identifying with the movement, emerged as one of its most celebrated practitioners with techniques including automated drawing, Lyrical Abstraction, and Color Field painting. In later years, he diversified his media further, working with ceramics, textiles, and even proposing sculptures made of gas. Through his vivid colors, dreamlike fantasies, and enigmatic symbols, this book brings together the numerous strands of Miró’s kaleidoscopic oeuvre to introduce his fascinating career, its interaction with major modernist movements, and how it made him into a modernist legend.

Yale University Press Robert Motherwell Drawings: A Catalogue Raisonne
This highly anticipated, definitive publication documenting Robert Motherwell’s 1,413 known drawings is an essential resource for artists, scholars, collectors, and aficionados Chosen by Brooklyn Rail as one of the “Ten Best Art Books of 2022” The drawings of Robert Motherwell (1915–1991) are critical to understanding his larger career, but they have been underexplored in scholarship. This long-awaited publication is the first comprehensive compilation of Motherwell’s drawings. During a career that lasted half a century, Motherwell, one of the preeminent artists of the Abstract Expressionist movement, created a large and varied body of work. He employed a broad range of imagery, inventing, refining, and reinventing his signature motifs. Drawing, which Motherwell described as “perhaps the only medium as fast as the mind itself,” was crucial to his output. This two-volume catalogue raisonné includes works from private collections never before seen by the public, as well as works from public collections worldwide. The first volume explores the significance of drawing throughout Motherwell’s career and illuminates how his drawings both inform and are distinct from his work in other media; it also includes a detailed bibliography and exhibition history of the drawings. The second volume illustrates and thoroughly documents his 1,413 known drawings.
