Schiffer Publishing Ltd Stability and Trim for the Ship’s Officer
Stability and Trim for the Ship’s Officer has been completely updated after twenty-two years. Aboard today’s vessels, technology and computers abound as ship’s gear. The once long and tedious calculations for stability, trim, and hull strength are now done in minutes. But no matter how much change the industry has undergone, the laws of physics are constant. The only way to verify that the computer is coming up with accurate figures is to read the ship’s drafts. Two new chapters have been included, “Prerequisites for Stability, Trim, and Hull Strength Calculations,” and “U.S. Coast Guard Questions on Stability, Trim, and Longitudinal Hull Strength.” The appendix has also been updated to include the Stability Data Reference Book—August 1989 Edition, which is the same supplied in the United States Coast Guard license examination room.

Morgan, and the films prompted an immediate revival of interest in whips for performance and sport use.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Formulae for the Mariner
This book is a compilation of all the formulae that a mariner is commonly called upon to use but the exact workings of which he has perhaps forgotten. For each subject category, the author states the basic parameters in narrative form, often including a figure, graph, chart, diagram, or table, and then provides accompanying equations and their amplifications. Although some formulae that are simpler in format are propounded in other texts, many of those formulae lead to confusion in that “special rules†must be applied to them in order to obtain a correct answer. However, the rules applied to the formulae in this book work for all problems. In a great circle sailing situation, for example, the fact of whether the vertex is ahead of you or behind you does not matter—if you apply the rule(s) given in this book, you will get the correct answer. Another important feature of the book is its devotion of over ten pages of material to the international system of units (S.I.)

Schiffer Publishing Ltd North American Aviation in the Jet Age, Vol. 2: The Columbus Years, 1941–1988
The year was 1941, and the flames of world war were threatening America’s shores. President Franklin D. Roosevelt called for an “Arsenal of Democracy” and demanded fabrication of 50,000 warplanes per year. But first, sprawling new airplane factories were needed. Located in the heart of Columbus, Ohio, proved to be an ideal choice. The Columbus plant was home to a broad spectrum of fascinating aircraft. Curtiss-Wright moved in, and soon, thousands of SB2C Helldivers rolled out. The Korean War found North American Aviation (NAA) of Los Angeles as the new occupant. Advanced airplanes, many of them jets, were soon in high-rate production. Some, like the T-28 Trojan and T-2, were docile trainers. The Navy FJ Fury series augmented the dogfighting F-86 Sabre jets during the 1950s. The OV-10 Bronco was built rugged for close-in jungle combat during the Vietnam War. The supersonic Vigilante was a masterpiece of homegrown advanced technology. Production at Columbus ended in 1988 with major subassemblies for the Rockwell B-1B Lancer, a strategic bomber. This is the history of the Columbus plant from pouring concrete footings in 1941 until the plant was vacated in 1988.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Doubt
Children face doubt in every part of their lives. What will I wear? How long will I have to wait? Did I do it right? These doubts allow us to face our insecurities and teach us how to choose, learn, and grow as we decide what paths to take in life. Doubt is an intelligent approach for children from their own point of view that combines subtle humor with a little bit of irony to reassure the reader that we all cope with like unknowns. Through a warm combination of colors, Pia Valentinis illustrates these common self-doubts through animals, each asking a simple question that creates a comfortable atmosphere where the reader is presented with different ways of dealing with them. Doubt is a part of life, what makes us human, and in a world where we are pressured to be perfect, it is a healthy lesson to learn that the world can be wrong, that we are at liberty to change our minds, and that it is okay to stop and question, because "I always have so many doubts . . . Don't you?"

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Turbulent Journey: The Jumo Engine, Operation Paperclip, and the American Dream
This untold story of early jet development, surviving the collapse of the Reich, and starting over in America is recounted by Reiner Decher, whose father Siegfried was an engineer on the team that designed the engine for the Me 262. Germany built the first operational jet aircraft during World War II, the Messerschmitt Me 262. Siegfried Decher was part of the engineering team that designed the engines that powered the 262. At the end of the war, Decher was nearly stranded in the Soviet Occupation Zone, but the US military made contact and offered a way out. As the principal responsible for a control system in the Jumo engine, Decher was of value to the Allies. Plans to evacuate during Operation Paperclip fell through. After a detour in France, Decher reached American shores several years later, where he enjoyed a successful career in the civil aviation industry. This untold story of early jet development is recounted by Siegfried's son, Reiner. Reiner, an accomplished engineer in his own right, constructs the story through a combination of his own memories and original letters and documents from his family archive.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Heinkel He 111: Luftwaffe Medium Bomber in World War II
Masquerading as a civilian airliner during the mid-1930s, the Heinkel He 111 medium-range bomber saw its first combat in 1936 with Germany’s Condor Legion during the Spanish Civil War. The initial stages of World War II confirmed the design’s prominent role in advancing the German blitzkrieg in Poland and France. However, it was during the 1940–41 air battles over Britain that the type’s defensive shortcomings became apparent. Easily recognized with its “greenhouse” nose, the He 111 was one of the most widely used Luftwaffe aircraft of WWII and saw use as a bomber and transport over nearly every warfront. Later models were successfully used in antishipping and glider tug roles. A postwar model, the CASA 2.111, was flown by Spain’s air force until the late 1950s, and as a transport into the 1970s. These Spanish models were also seen in such classic war films at The Battle of Britain and Patton.

This second of two volumes on American landing craft of World War II focuses on the larger LCT, LSM, LCS(L)(3), and LST vessels that transported tanks and heavy equipment to the shores of North Africa and Normandy and throughout the Pacific. The need for massive numbers of landing craft capable of disgorging huge numbers of troops and equipment was predicted by the US Army in 1940. Later, the British army estimated that over 2,000 of such vessels would be required for the assault on Europe. The US launched a building campaign to produce these seagoing craft, turning primarily to shipyards and manufacturers located along the American rivers. Ultimately many of these continued to serve the nation's need through Vietnam. Some were even heavily laden with rocket launchers and used for close-in support for troops going ashore.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd The Dharma of Fashion: A Buddhist Approach to Our Life with Clothes
Our desires for fashion, our addiction to cheap clothes, our fixation on surface looks . . . can we find ways to make what we wear more positive? Here's a quirky, irreverent way to consider what's a more sustainable way to be with—and still enjoy—fashion. This little book shows that fashion isn't shallow but connects us to the depths of existence. Especially today, fashion can tell us something about life, and this series of meditations and conversations between fashion "hacktivist" von Busch and Buddhist teacher Josh Korda shows how a Buddhist perspective on fashion can help us engage with clothes in wiser ways. It may seem a Buddhist approach to fashion would be about denying fashion and living an ascetic life in dull robes. However, Buddhism can teach us to be more present and take more pleasure in fashion. With practice and reflection, we can live a wiser life with the consumption of clothes. Includes "action exercises" to help put ideas into practice in your life and closet.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd North American Aviation in the Jet Age: The California Years, 1945–1997
During the waning days of World War II, a frenzied race was underway in rubble-strewn Europe as US and Soviet forces sought to seize advanced German weapons technology. Over the next quarter century, North American Aviation (NAA) would enhance these spoils of war into fearsome weapons in America's arsenal. There's the swept-wing F-86 Sabre jet fighter, which would go on to be the only Allied warplane to outmaneuver a Soviet MiG-15 over Korea. X-15 rocket planes carried humans to the boundaries of space, setting speed and altitude records that still hold today. The story of these weapons and the engineers who nourished them is a fascinating look into postwar corporate history of the NAA and its impact on US aviation and space history.

The Bf 109 E was flown by all of Germany’s famed early-war fighter aces, men such as Adolf Galland, Werner Mölders, Helmut Wick, Wilhelm Balthasar, Walther Oesau, and countless others.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd M551 Sheridan: The US Army’s Armored Reconnaissance / Airborne Assault Vehicle from Vietnam to Desert Storm
The M551 Sheridan is often referred to as a light tank, but in actuality it was an armored reconnaissance/airborne assault vehicle. The M551 was designed to be a lightweight, amphibious, air-droppable vehicle armed with a massive 152 mm gun that doubled as a rocket launcher. The gun launcher was designed to fire the MGM-51 Shillelagh antitank missile, or 152 mm conventional rounds with a combustible cartridge case. The vehicles saw extensive use in Vietnam, Operation Just Cause in Panama (where they saw their only combat air drop), and Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. The Sheridan ended its service with the US Army masquerading as Soviet Bloc vehicles at the National Training Center. Through dozens of archival as well as detailed photographs of some of the finest extant examples of these vehicles, the Sheridan is explored, and its history explained. Part of the Legends of Warfare series.
