This is the second volume on medieval Antioch which is meant to become a series of studies on less well-known aspects of the city's eventful history. Its multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi-linguistic character pose more than one problem which needs further investigation. Unknown material, new interpretations of texts, translations of unknown or less accessible texts accompanied by commentaries, are the main focus of this series of publications on Antioch. This volume reponds to this initiative. Various contributions highlight unknown or understudied aspects of this history. A translation of a Logos of the Greek theologian Nikon of the Black Mountain is presented by Wim Aerts. An almost unknown anonymous enumeration of descriptions of the castles of Nureddin, written in Arabic, was made by Tevfik Buyukasik. The description of Edessa in Abu al-Makarim's History of the Churches and Monasteries of Egypt and some neighbouring Countries was translated by Clara ten Hacken. The Greek Reconquest in 969 influenced Byzantine art (Alexander Simansky). In the same period Northerners from Scandinavia are signalled in Antioch (Krijnie Ciggaar). The Latin conquest of 1098 and its aftermath are discussed by Thomas Asbridge. Jochen Burgtorf focuses on the Hospitaller Lordship of Margat. Tasha Vorderstrasse concentrates on contacts with China, Mongolia and Armenia, while Balazs Major presents material culture when discussing a mill in Valania. In the article by Laurence Delobette crusaders from Burgundy appear on the scene after 1268. The various articles stimulate further research and discussion on the various aspects of the history of this important and influential city in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Anecdotes of Enlightenment is the first literary history of the anecdote in English. Myles Burnyeat (1939-2019) was a major figure in the study of ancient Greek philosophy during the last decades of the twentieth century and the first of this. After teaching positions in London and Cambridge, where he became Laurence Professor, in 1996 he took up a Senior Research Fellowship at All Souls College, Oxford, from which he retired in 2006. In 2012 he published two volumes collecting essays dating from before the move to Oxford. Why do humans get angry with objects? Why is it that a malfunctioning computer, a broken tool, or a fallen glass causes an outbreak of fury? It is normally thought that the bass viol or viola da gamba dropped out of British musical life in the 1690s, and that Henry Purcell was the last composer to write for it. Peter Holman shows how the gamba changed its role and function in the Restoration period under the influence of foreign music and musicians; how it was played and composed for by the circle of immigrant musicians around Handel; how it was part of the fashion for exotic instruments in themiddle of the century; and how the presence in London of its greatest eighteenth-century exponent, Charles Frederick Abel, sparked off a revival in the 1760s and 70s. This book explores Chinese artistic and stylistic influences on Modernist practice in early twentieth century Britain. This volume examines the ways in which an intellectual vogue for a mythic China was a constituent element of British modernism. Traditionally defined as a decorative style that conjured a fanciful and idealized notion of China, chinoiserie was revived in in London's avant garde circles, the Bloomsbury group, the Vorticists and others, who like their eighteenth century forebears, turned to China as a cultural and aesthetic utopia. Since the construction of the first embedded system in the 1960s, embedded systems have continued to spread. They provide a continually increasing number of services and are part of our daily life. The development of these systems is a difficult problem which does not yet have a global solution. Another difficulty is that systems are plunged into the real world, which is not discrete (as is generally understood in computing), but has a richness of behaviors which sometimes hinders the formulation of simplifying assumptions due to their generally autonomous nature and they must face possibly unforeseen situations (incidents, for example), or even situations that lie outside the initial design assumptions. Embedded Systems presents the state of the art of the development of embedded systems and, in particular, concentrates on the modeling and analysis of these systems by looking at “model-driven engineering”, (MDE2): SysML, UML/MARTE and AADL.
