During their 40-year career, Bernd and Hilla Becher created their own architectural typology as they photographed buildings in a unique style. 'Basic Forms' represents the culmination of their career. Although the subject matter is unglamorous—mine shafts, blast furnaces, cooling towers, water towers, silos, and gas tanks—the Bechers’ passion for their work imbues these photographs with beauty and solemnity. The Bechers restricted the conditions of each photograph—taking them early in the morning, on overcast days, so as to eliminate shadow and distribute light evenly. Each image is centered and frontally framed, its parallel lines set on an even plane. There are no human figures, nor are there birds in the sky. The result is a treasury of precisely functional architectural forms, a sublime example of conceptual artistic practices, and a series of “perfect sculptures of a bygone industrial age.”

The relief and its significance for modernism. The relief is a form of the visual arts situated between painting and sculpture a hybrid between two- and threedimensional expression that emancipates itself from the surface even as it remains confined to the same. The publication will explore the various manifestations of the relief over a span of more than a century and a half, from 1800 until into the 1960s, during which the medium took on ever greater importance for artists and theorists alike. Whereas in the nineteenth century classical methods of three-dimensional composition and sculptural invention still dominated the production of reliefs, the spectrum broadened in the twentieth to encompass widely differing materials, techniques, and their combinations. Born in France to an American banker, he made his first expedition to Egypt in 1853 where he photographed ancient Egyptian monuments and is thought to be the first archeologist to use photography. In these photographs, he positioned his horizon lines with precision, at times placing them so low in the frame that the photograph is nearly all blank sky, or so high that the monuments are almost swallowed up by vast seas of sand. Some of his Egyptian landscapes are so visually spare they appear to be of nothing at all. Greene also traveled to Algeria where he photographed the ancient cliff-top city of Constantine and the seaport town, Cherchell. By contrast, Greene’s photographs from Algeria frequently present a densely layered abundance of visual detail. Breathtakingly beautiful, Greene’s photographs construct a visual record of archaeological monuments and landscapes. Featuring some 100 vintage prints, this comprehensive book aims to introduce Greene’s work to a new audience and to reconsider his place in the history of photography.

Themes of memory, love, economic inequality, and political upheaval are threaded throughout de Andrade’s work, which is often situated in Recife, his hometown in the northeast corner of Brazil. This includes the artist’s most recent works, The Fish, a 16mm film about fishermen who embrace their prey at the moment of their death, and para 2 em 1, in which de Andrade uses an instruction manual as a metaphor for homosexual love. By localizing his art, de Andrade makes powerful statements about many of the issues facing Brazil’s working class, including environmental degradation, urban blight, political inequity, and the loss of traditions and cultures. This highly original and personal exploration of Tadao Ando's work, one of Japan's leading architects, traverses both the physical and spiritual world. In 2012, Philippe Se clier visited Tadao Ando's iconic Church of the Light, and was immediately compelled to journey around the world to further study the architect's buildings. This unique presentation of Ando's work is the result of what turned into a nine-year project to photograph 130 buildings. Walking around each structure, trying to find the proper framing, helped Se clier understand Ando's genius for siting and composition. Loosely organized by chronology, each building is represented in numerous black and white images, arranged like a mosaic on the page. These fragmented views correspond to Ando's own philosophy of the logic of structure and geometry.
