A Late Ordovician silicified brachiopod fauna from the White Mountain area, west-central Alaska is described and interpreted in a palaeoecological and biogeographical context. This area is situated within the Nixon Fork Subterrane of the Farewell Terrane, which origin and timing of final docking with Laurentia has been much debated. The current study adds new faunal data to the debate with nearly 100 species described, of these at least nine are new. The fauna is predominantly a deep-water autochthonous fauna that was mixed with an allochthonous fauna as a result of down-slope movement of turbidity currents. Biogeographically this study demonstrates close faunal affinities with Siberia.

This book consists of several carefully crafted essays on the subject of gambling. The first two essays relate the latest trends on technology and communications to the development of actual gambling practice. And so the first essay documents the impact of simulcast racing on wagering dollars—the impact simulcast bettering has raised the total amounts wagered from .25 billion dollars in 1985 to 15.62 billion dollars in 2002. Bettors find great interest in this developing technology. The next essay untangles the logic of the "double-auction gambling market" by explaining how the experimental work at George Mason University has and is altering the role of the bookmaker who now functions as a mere broker coordinating contracts between bettors. This development is especially obvious in Britain where online gambling is legal. As for the burgeoning state lotteries especially in the United States, we offer three insightful essays. The first recalls the hidden costs that these entertainments often imposed on the community. Indeed, the second essay offers empirical evidence that the persons "most likely" to play the lottery are not only the poor but those poor who are close to getting over the "poverty line." In The Marquise, George Sand reacts against the tradition of the libertine novels of the 19th century by making the Marquise the narrator of the story, thus giving her control of the action. Sand deconstructs the myth of the seducer by making Lelio, the hero, the subject of the Marquise's desire. Pauline's two female protagonists represent diametrically opposed 19th-century female roles. Pauline is trapped by the bourgeois strictures of the time, while her friend, Laurence, an actress and intellectual, is independent both financially and emotionally.
