Schiffer Publishing Ltd Dick Allen, The Life and Times of a Baseball Immortal: An Illustrated Biography
Baseball star Richie "Dick" Allen forced Philadelphians to address the racism that existed in their city during the 1960s. Named the American League's Most Valuable Player in 1972, Allen was one of the game's most misunderstood players. Based on interviews of teammates, family, friends, and Allen himself, this richly illustrated biography with original artwork by Dick Perez explores the star’s personal life as well as his playing career. When Odilo Globocnik, SS and police leader in Lublin, Poland, transferred to the Italian OZAK region in late 1943, he took with him a group of around 100 men who had run the notorious Aktion Reinhard extermination camps—Belzec, Treblinka, Sobibor—where 1.5 million people (mostly Jews) had been killed. The book also covers the SS-Wachmannschaften (SS guards units) of the OZAK, military units that were formed locally and had links with Abteilung R. There are also chapters on uniforms and insignia, as well as photographs related to anti-partisan operations in the region.

This photographic essay highlights the little-known history of the first Jewish communities established in the New World dating to the 1600s. Award-winning photographer Wyatt Gallery documents the oldest synagogues and cemeteries on Barbados, Curacao, Jamaica, St. Thomas, St. Eustatius, and Suriname through his singular style of photos with histories written by Stanley Mirvis. The enclaves, formed by Sephardic Jews who fled the Catholic Inquisition, became so influential that they helped fuel the success of the American Revolution and partially finance the first synagogues in New York City and Newport, Rhode Island. Once home to thousands, today these historic communities are rapidly dwindling and could soon disappear. Only five historic synagogues remain in use, and many of the cemeteries have been damaged or lost to natural disasters, vandalism, and pollution. These photographs bear witness to the legacy of New World Judaism and provide a record for future generations.

This book gives exposure and long-overdue attention to 50 players who have certainly received some accolades in their careers but yet still remain outside of the mainstream and the typical lists of "guitar greats." Interviews give insight into guitar players from various genres—including hard rockers Rik Emmett, Dave Meniketti, and Pat Travers, heavy metalists Andy LaRocque and Uli Jon Roth, funk masters Michael Hampton and Howard E. Scott, jazz-fusion players Frank Gambale and Carl Verheyen, prog-rockers Steve Hackett and Martin Barre, and singer-songwriters Bruce Cockburn and Richie Furay. The musicians get personal, speaking about their careers in their own words. Also included are short biographies on each player and photographs.
