Taylor & Francis Inc Angell at 100: A Century of Compassionate Care for Animals and Their Families at Angell Animal Medical Center
Angell at 100: A Century of Compassionate Care for Animals and Their Families at Angell Animal Medical Center chronicles the achievements of one of the foremost clinical veterinary institutions in the world. Angell Animal Medical Center is the first and largest animal hospital in New England. This book is a celebration of one hundred years of groundbreaking innovation and heartfelt compassion.Founded in 1868 by George Angell, the MSPCA is the second oldest humane organization in America. Its flagship hospital, Angell Animal Medical Center, was founded in 1915, and was the first animal hospital in New England. The MSPCA–Angell has expanded from advocacy and protection to healing and advancing the practice of veterinary medicine. Over the past century the organization has seen vast changes in society, the environment, and the attitude to the animals in our lives. It has helped make laws and set standards that have fundamentally shaped our sense of kindness and care for animals—and for one another. In the 21st century, MSPCA–Angell continues to rescue, shelter, protect, heal, and advocate for animals, giving special care to tens of thousands of animals each year. It also provides emergency assistance and strategic planning help for animal protection groups across the United States and around the globe. This book is a portrait of Angell Animal Medical Center from its founding in 1915 to the present day, and tells the stories of the dedicated doctors, the creative medical innovations, and of course the tales of the diverse patients and their families. Today the hospital has specialties ranging from acupuncture to ophthalmology, from behavioral services to nutrition, from dentistry to neurology and neurosurgery, as well as general medicine. Although the majority of the patients are dogs and cats, birds and rabbits are not uncommon, and there is sometimes even the occasional tortoise. It’s been an extraordinary one hundred years, and here’s to one hundred more.

New York University Press The Queer Nuyorican: Racialized Sexualities and Aesthetics in Loisaida
Finalist for The Barnard Hewitt Award for Outstanding Research in Theatre History, given by the American Society for Theatre Research. Silver Medal Winner of The Victor Villaseñor Best Latino Focused Non-Fiction Book Award, given by the International Latino Book Awards. Honorable Mention for the Best LGBTQ+ Themed Book, given by the International Latino Book Awards. A queer genealogy of the famous performance space and the nuyorican aesthetic One could easily overlook the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, a small, unassuming performance venue on New York City’s Lower East Side. Yet the space once hosted the likes of Victor Hernández Cruz, Allen Ginsberg, and Amiri Baraka and is widely credited as the homespace for the emergent nuyorican literary and aesthetic movement of the 1990s. Founded by a group of counterculturalist Puerto Rican immigrants and artists in the 1970s, the space slowly transformed the Puerto Rican ethnic and cultural associations of the epithet “Nuyorican,” as the Cafe developed into a central hub for an artistic movement encompassing queer, trans, and diasporic performance. The Queer Nuyorican is the first queer genealogy and critical study of the historical, political, and cultural conditions under which the term “Nuyorican” shifted from a raced/ethnic identity marker to “nuyorican,” an aesthetic practice. The nuyorican aesthetic recognizes and includes queer poets and performers of color whose writing and performance build upon the politics inherent in the Cafe’s founding. Initially situated within the Cafe’s physical space and countercultural discursive history, the nuyorican aesthetic extends beyond these gendered and ethnic boundaries, broadening the ethnic marker Nuyorican to include queer, trans, and diasporic performance modalities. Hip-hop studies, alongside critical race, queer, literary, and performance theories, are used to document the interventions made by queer and trans artists of color—Miguel Piñero, Regie Cabico, Glam Slam participants, and Ellison Glenn/Black Cracker—whose works demonstrate how the Nuyorican Poets Cafe has operated as a queer space since its founding. In focusing on artists who began their careers as spoken word artists and slam poets at the Cafe, The Queer Nuyorican examines queer modes of circulation that are tethered to the increasing visibility, commodification, and normalization of spoken word, slam poetry, and hip-hop theater in the United States and abroad.

Stanford University Press Building Colonial Cities of God: Mendicant Orders and Urban Culture in New Spain
This book tracks New Spain's mendicant orders past their so-called golden age of missions into the ensuing centuries and demonstrates that they had equally crucial roles in what Melvin terms the "spiritual consolidation" of cities. Beginning in the late sixteenth century, cities became home to the majority of friars and to the orders' wealthiest houses, and mendicants became deeply embedded in urban social and cultural life. Friars ministered to urban residents of all races and social standings and engaged in traditional mendicant activities, serving as preachers, confessors, spiritual directors, alms collectors, educators, scholars, and sponsors of charitable works. Each order brought to this work a distinct identity that informed people's beliefs and shaped variations in the practice of Catholicism. Contrary to prevailing views, mendicant orders flourished during the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, and even the eighteenth-century reforms that ended this era were not as devastating as has been assumed.Even in the face of new institutional challenges, the demand for their services continued through the end of the colonial period, demonstrating the continued vitality of baroque piety.

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC This is Not a Love Song
It is 1996 and Anne Strelau is sitting on a plane bound for London, heading towards the man she has loved since her teens. Having tired of the pretence of living 'normally', she has given in to her 'madness' and decided to confront the object of her passion, Peter Hemstedt. In fact, there is little that is 'normal' about Anne. Most obviously, at 112 kg, she is grotesquely overweight. "This is Not a Love Song" is the story of Anne's ups and downs: of her unhappy childhood, her miserable adolescence, and the start of her obsession with her weight. 'The decision to embark on the first diet is a decisive, if not the most decisive, step in a girl's life', she decides. 'In any case, it is more important than the hugely overrated event of losing your virginity.' First anorexic then bulimic, she measures her self-worth in kilos and boyfriends. Then she falls for handsome, successful Hemstedt. When her love is not returned, she fakes 'normality' and gets a job. But still nothing works. 'I have reached a point', she records in her mid-thirties, 'where I no longer believe in anyone or anything, apart from chocolate.' A brilliantly black comedy about obesity, adult disappointment and cynicism, wars, ecological disasters and passing fashions, "This is Not a Love Song" serves up irresistibly macabre chic lit with a thick coating of grime and fat.
