Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Research Handbook on International Marine Environmental Law
This wholly new edition of the Research Handbook on International Marine Environmental Law provides an authoritative examination of international law relating to the protection of the marine environment. Rather than merely revised and updated, this new edition provides completely new and original chapters that critically engage with current legal issues surrounding activities that harm the marine environment, including marine pollution, seabed activities, exploitation of marine biodiversity and climate change, and with the different legal tools and mechanisms, including environmental impact assessments and compliance and dispute settlement mechanisms, used to protect the marine environment. New chapters also address legal issues relating to the role of technology and marine scientific research as well as the application of principles such as public participation. Each chapter goes beyond a survey of existing law to identify shortcomings in the legal regime and details further work needed to ensure effective regulation and management of human activities that affect the marine environment.Written by eminent scholars and practitioners, the Research Handbook on International Marine Environmental Law is a vital resource for scholars and government and policy practitioners, as well as for lawyers, policy advisers and advocates who work at intergovernmental organisations and non-governmental organisations that address marine environmental issues.

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC World War II US Marine Infantry Regiments
The United States Marine Corps came into its own in the Pacific Islands campaign against Japan in World War II. From Guadalcanal to Okinawa, US Marines formed the tip of the spear as Allied forces sought to push the Japanese back to their Home Islands. This fascinating study tracks the deployments of the various Marine divisions throughout the war and explains their composition, but also goes deeper, to detail the individual regiments – the focus of the marines' identity and pride. It explains the organization of the Marine infantry regiment and its equipment, and how they evolved during the war. The marine infantryman's evolving uniforms, field equipment and weapons are illustrated throughout using specially commissioned artwork and detailed descriptions to produce a fitting portrait of the US military’s elite fighting force in the Pacific.

Pen & Sword Books Ltd The United States Marine Corps in the Korean War: Rare Photographs from Wartime Archives
On June 25, 1950, the North Korean Army invaded South Korea. Among the US forces sent to South Korea was the 1st Marine Division. In September 1950, the Division audaciously landed deep behind enemy lines at Inchon port, throwing the North Korea Army into disarray. In November 1950, the Chinese Army invaded North Korea with eight divisions tasked with the destruction of the 1st Marine Division at the Chosin Reservoir. The Marines made a 78-mile fighting withdrawal in arctic conditions before being evacuated by the US Navy. In February 1951, the 1st Marine Division returned to combat assisting Eighth (US) Army to repulse five Chinese Army offensives over four months. By November 1951, the large-scale back and forth offensives operations by the opposing sides had ended, replaced by a stalemate which lasted until the 27 July, 1953 armistice. The bitter three-year conflict accounted for the death of 4,267 Marines with another 23,744 wounded. In classic Images of War style, expert author Michael Green describes the Marine Corps' outstanding contribution, organization, tactics, fighting doctrine and weaponry.

University of Toronto Press Marian Devotion in Thirteenth-Century French Lyric
Texts centred on the mother of Jesus abound in religious traditions the world over, but thirteenth-century Old French lyric stands apart, both because of the enormous size of the Marian cult in thirteenth-century France and the lack of critical attention the genre has garnered from scholars. As hybrid texts, Old French Marian songs combine motifs from several genres and registers to articulate a devotional message. In this comprehensive and illuminating study, Daniel E. O’Sullivan examines the movement between secular and religious traditions in medieval culture that Old French religious song embodies. He demonstrates that Marian lyric was far more than a simple, mindless imitation of secular love song. On the contrary, Marian lyric participated in a dynamic interplay with the secular tradition that different composers shaped and reshaped in light of particular doctrinal and aesthetic concerns. It is a corpus that reveals itself to be far more malleable and supple than past readers have admitted. With an extensive index of musical and textual editions of dozens of songs, Marian Devotion in Thirteenth-Century French Lyric brings a heretofore neglected genre to light.

Ediciones Encuentro, S.A.

Systems Analysis and Simulation in Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences William E. Grant This hands-on approach provides guidance to the step-by-step applications of systems analysis and simulation to questions about ecological systems. At the same time, it explains general principles without requiring that readers have a strong background in mathematics, statistics, or computer science. Chapter 1 traces the development of systems ecology introducing basic concepts, while Chapters 2 through 5 present the four phases of systems analysis: conceptual model formulation, quantitative specification of the model, model validation, and model use. 1986 (0 471-89236-X) 338 pp. Bioeconomic Modelling and Fisheries Management Colin W. Clark Discusses the management of commercial marine fisheries and the relationship between the economic forces affecting the fishing industry and the biological factors that determine the production and supply of fish in the sea. Topics focus on methods of preventing overfishing and overcapitalization, economically effective and practical forms of regulation, management of developing fisheries, natural fluctuations of fish stocks, and complexities of marine ecosystems. 1985 (0 471-87394-2) 291 pp. Methods in Marine Zooplankton Ecology Makoto Omori and Tsutomu Ikeda Encompassing basic principles, procedures, and research problems, this book serves as a complete guide to current methods used in the study of marine zooplankton. The techniques are equally applicable to small organisms and to the larval stages of larger, commercially important organisms. Chapters start with a brief, but well-summarized introduction to zooplankton, followed by field sampling strategies and laboratory methods, and then conclude with estimates of productivity and analysis of community structure. Each method is described in detail, including a discussion of the problems inherent in using it. 1984 (0 471-80107-0) 322 pp.

Pennsylvania State University Press Queen, Mother, and Stateswoman: Mariana of Austria and the Government of Spain
When Philip IV of Spain died in 1665, his heir, Carlos II, was three years old. In addition to this looming dynastic crisis, decades of enormous military commitments had left Spain a virtually bankrupt state with vulnerable frontiers and a depleted army. In Silvia Z. Mitchell’s revisionist account, Queen, Mother, and Stateswoman, Queen Regent Mariana of Austria emerges as a towering figure at court and on the international stage, while her key collaborators—the secretaries, ministers, and diplomats who have previously been ignored or undervalued—take their rightful place in history.Mitchell provides a nuanced account of Mariana of Austria’s ten-year regency (1665–75) of the global Spanish Empire and examines her subsequent role as queen mother. Drawing from previously unmined primary sources, including Council of State deliberations, diplomatic correspondence, Mariana’s and Carlos’s letters, royal household papers, manuscripts, and legal documents, Mitchell describes how, over the course of her regency, Mariana led the monarchy out of danger and helped redefine the military and diplomatic blocs of Europe in Spain’s favor. She follows Mariana’s exile from court and recounts how the dowager queen used her extensive connections and diplomatic experience to move the negotiations for her son’s marriage forward, effectively exploiting the process to regain her position.A new narrative of the Spanish Habsburg monarchy in the later seventeenth century, this volume advances our knowledge of women’s legitimate political entitlement in the early modern period. It will be welcomed by scholars and students of queenship, women’s studies, and early modern Spain.

Oxford University Press Inc The Cantigas de Santa Maria
Alfonso X (1221-84) ruled over the Crown of Castile from 1252 until his death. Known as the Wise, he oversaw the production of a wealth of literature in his scriptorium. One of the most impressive of these literary outputs is the collection of songs known as the Cantigas de Santa Maria, which by most counts comprises 429 songs preserved in four manuscripts. The miracle songs (or cantigas de miragre) form the focus of this book. While the Cantigas have been the subject of much scholarly attention, only a handful of studies have looked at the repertory through an interdisciplinary lens. Fewer still have probed how the Cantigas use the power of song as a communicative medium, one that functions as a social tool within the erudite environment of the Alfonsine court. This book offers a new perspective to the song collection, probing how the Cantigas use their music and text, together with rhetorical devices, to communicate with their desired audience. Casemate Publishers L.B.J’S Hired Gun: A Marine Corps Helicopter Gunner and the War in Vietnam
Many Vietnam memoirs have appeared in recent years, but not a single one has the humour, pathos, poignancy, and often sheer hilarity of John J. Gebhart’s riveting LBJ’S Hired Gun. As Gebhart tells it, he was a ‘smart-mouthed college boy’ who joined the Marines to see the world and ‘dust a few black pajamas for Uncle Sam.’ Two gruelling tours of duty later (1965-1967) he returned home as a sergeant after surviving 240 combat missions (12 air medals) and being shot down twice. On his chest was the Navy Commendation Award (with the combat V). LBJ’s Hired Gun launches with Gebhart’s grim recollection of the intense old-school brutality that was Marine Corps training on Parris Island before transitioning to his difficult journey for Southeast Asia aboard a troop transport with 2,000 other nameless grunts. These hardships offered but a glimpse of the suffering he and his comrades were about to endure. His candid account of life and death in Vietnam is written with a lively, infectious flair. But be forewarned: no attempt has been made to sanitize this memoir with politically-correct language. Gebhart tells his story exactly as he and his comrades spoke in the 1960s. About the Author John J. Gebhart quit college in 1964 and joined the Marine Corps. He spent the years from September 1965 to September 1967 in Vietnam, much of it as Huey door gunner. Gebhart graduated from St Joseph College with a B.S. in Business Administration and is the owner of a large employment service company. Gebhart was inducted into the ‘Enlisted Combat Aircrew Roll of Honor’ on November 14, 2003, aboard USS Yorktown at Patriots Point in Charleston, South Carolina.

Witness Blanchard's artistic evolution from her early Cubist works to her later emotionally charged paintings, characterized by bold colors. The catalog offers a chronological journey through the different stages in the artistic life of the Spanish painter María Blanchard (Santander, 1881-1932). Its aim is to highlight the symbolic richness and innovative character inherent in her work during her short artistic career. A substantial body of her work was not adequately appreciated in the cultural context of that time, which believed in the artistic inferiority of women. Committed to her unique way of living and creating until the end, she transcended the boundaries of gender stereotypes. The vast repertoire of work she left behind, including maternity scenes, domestic scenes, children, and workers, reflects a heartfelt female concern for the vulnerability of the human condition and the evocative power of emotions. These aspects are reinforced by a meticulous technical mastery and a keen

ISTE Ltd and John Wiley & Sons Inc Marine Environmental Quality: Healthy Coastal Waters
Understanding marine pollution and the contamination of coastal environments requires knowledge from a variety of scientific fields. Marine Environmental Quality promotes a multidisciplinary approach to investigations, drawing on not only natural sciences, but also applied mathematics and social sciences. The investigations in this book focus on both organic and inorganic pollutants, firstly in a study conducted in the city of La Rochelle, on the North Atlantic French coast, then expanding the areas under examination to regions of English and Portuguese waters and, lastly, to the Mediterranean Sea. The improvement such research can bring to biomarkers, models and experiments enables equal progress in the quality of seawater in ports and protected areas of coastal regions. The eight chapters of Marine Environmental Quality present many aspects of this research, including experiments with floating barriers, water governance in various areas, sampling sites and sentinel species that act as biomarkers in harbors. Also covered are environmental commitments, both international and local, the risk that marine contamination poses to human health, experimental designs for interactions with microplastics and a study biomonitoring the juveniles of sentinel species. Such results will bring many benefits, to human health, to economic inclusion and to regional development.
