Orion Publishing Co Magic Bites: A Kate Daniels Novel: 1
Kate Daniels is about to enter a world of gritty magic and dangerous mystery! Vampires, necromancers and mages abound on the city streets, with one kickass heroine in the middleFuture Atlanta is an interesting place to live: one moment magic dominates, and cars stall and guns fail. The next, technology takes over and the defensive spells no longer protect your house from monsters. Here skyscrapers topple under the onslaught of magic; the Pack, a paramilitary clan of shapechangers, prowl through the ruined streets; and the Masters of the Dead, necromancers driven by their thirst for knowledge and wealth, pilot blood-crazed vampires with their minds. Kate Daniels likes her sword a little too much, and she has a hard time controlling her mouth. The magic in her blood makes her a target, and she's spent most of her life hiding in plain sight. But when Kate's guardian is murdered, she must choose to do nothing, and remain safe, or to risk her life by pursuing his preternatural killer. Hiding is easy, but the right choice is rarely easy ...Readers are hooked on Magic Bites:'Everything in this story has an edge to it . . . there is humour, but it's of the drier, more wry, and grimmer variety . . . The stakes are particularly high in this novel, in ways that you need to read to find out' Goodreads reviewer, ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐'[Kate] is tough, smart, mouthy and a little arrogant. She is my favourite kind of heroine. She doesn't give in to lengthy emotional blabbering or emotional breakdowns so I love her!' Goodreads reviewer, ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐'I want to add a gazillion more starts to my rating . . . I love the concept of the shifting magic and technology' Goodreads reviewer, ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐'Kate is a kickass heroine. She knows how to use her sword better than she knows how to walk in high heels. She is fierce, strong, reliable, faithful to her friends' Goodreads reviewer, ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ 'I love this book. I love this world. I love Kate. It's still my favourite series. It's fantastic, it's a great start, and if you haven't read it yet, DO IT. And then remember that the books just get better from here, exponentially better' Goodreads reviewer, ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG Reformed Historical Theology: Georg Sohn (1551-1589), Herman Rennecherus (1550-?), Jacob Kimedoncius (1554-1596), Daniel Tossanus (1541-1602)

WW Norton & Co Strong As Death Is Love: The Song of Songs, Ruth, Esther, Jonah, and Daniel, A Translation with Commentary
These five late biblical books offer readers a range of pleasures not usually associated with the Bible. They are artful, entertaining literary works—innovative, even startling. Women often stand centre stage. The Song of Songs, a celebration of young love, frankly sensuous, with no reference to God, offers some of the most beautiful love poems of the ancient world. The story of Esther’s shrewd triumph is a secular entertainment that mixes farce with sly sexual comedy. The character of Ruth embodies the virtues of loyalty, love and charity in a harmonious world. Enigma replaces harmony in Daniel, whose feverish dreams envision the end of time. And the traditions of prophecy are recast in the tale of a fish that swallows Jonah. Alter’s translation restores the original power of these popular books.

After working in Augsburg and Vienna they came to Regensburg in 1663. Their sculptural reliefs for Emperor Ferdinand III on Ovid brought issues of Empire, iconography and artistic creation into focus. The attached catalogue of works deals with the provenance, restauration, iconography, analysis and reception of their oeuvre. This study provides valuable evidence that a re-evaluation of ceroplastics is long overdue within the canon.

Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG The Ironic Calvinism of Daniel Kalaj (d. 1681): A Study in the History and Theology of the Polish-Lithuanian Reformation
Daniel Kalaj (d.1681) was a Polish Reformer of Hungarian background, born in Little Poland (Malopolska) and trained in Franeker, Friesland, under some of the most brilliant Reformed theologians of seventeenth-century Europe, such as Cocceius and Cloppenburgh. Kalaj's ministry in the Reformed Church of Little Poland was abruptly interrupted when Catholic authorities wrongly accused him of spreading then-outlawed Arianism, calling him a "Calvinoarian." Kalaj became the first Polish Protestant minister to receive a sentence of capital punishment as a result of the new anti-toleration law issued in 1658 against Arians, under the false pretext of military treason during the Second Northern War (1655-1660). He escaped the axe by fleeing to Lithuania (and later to Gdansk), where he wrote his best-known work "A Friendly Dialogue between an Evangelical Minister and a Roman Catholic Priest". The "Friendly Dialogue" is both: Kalaj's own personal defense and a compendium to Polish Reformed doctrine, and has a strongly irenic disposition. In contrast with many Reformed thinkers of his day, Kalaj is capable of communicating Reformed doctrine in a friendly and peaceful manner. He places special emphasis on the unity of the catholic church, as expressed in his statement that "the three churches Roman, and Lutheran, and Reformed are all part of one true church before God," while at the same time attempting to retain his Reformed orthodoxy.

Uniwersytet Jagiellonski, Wydawnictwo At the Roots of the Modern Novel – A Comparative Reading of Ihara Saikaku`s The Life of an Amorous Woman and Daniel Defoe`s Moll Flanders
The book focuses on the use of confessional mode in Daniel Defoe's Moll Flanders and Ihara Saikaku's The Life of an Amorous Woman, two works of fiction, which, although written in two different cultural contexts, bear a number of narrative similarities. Both works attempt to create trustworthy narrators and use realistic techniques of depiction while focusing on details and enumerating tangible objects. Both describe vividly and colourfully the milieu and the characters while embracing the contradictions of life and personality. Finally, both use a mode of confession, displaying 'what occurs in the individual mind under the impact of the temporal flux,' which is a principle characteristic of the modern novel (Watt 22).The author delineates the development of narrative fiction in Japan and England (Chapter I), analyses the role of confession (or revelation) in the literary and cultural traditions of the two countries (Chapter II&III), and considers various intricacies of using confession as a narrative strategy in fiction (Chapter IV). The revelation of the narrators' past is accompanied by their conscious concealment of various details and by means of withholding certain information they succeed in attracting the attention of the audience and preparing a suitable setting for disclosure. Moreover, although Moll Flanders and the Amorous Woman, both experienced and advanced in years, yet sometimes showing naivety and ignorance characteristic of their childhood and youth, speak from the distance of time and place, they are entirely absorbed in their stories, frequently using the praesens historicum to emphasise the immediacy of what they narrate. The terms "novel" and "confession" are used in the book as broad categories, which enable – although not without reservations – a comparative reading of two works coming from two different backgrounds. The attempts to define the labels in the literary, historical and biographical contexts bring to the forefront not only the narrative traditions in England and Japan but also the present-day understanding of what the modern novel is.

Edinburgh University Press The Life of Sir Walter Scott by John Macrone: edited with an introduction by Daniel Grader
This is an annotated critical edition of a newly discovered life of Scott by one of his contemporaries. John Macrone, who wrote this life of Scott in 1832-1833, was admirably suited to the task; for, while he had never met Scott, his friends and associates included Cunningham, Galt, and Hogg, who wrote his Anecdotes of Scott for publication in Macrone's book. A quarrel with Lockhart, however, put a stop to the project, and nothing more was heard of it until the recent discovery of an autograph manuscript, here edited and published for the first time. A well-written and carefully-researched narrative, it increases our knowledge of Scott's life and work as perceived by his contemporaries, as well as enabling us to read Hogg's Anecdotes in their original context. The editor's introduction draws extensively on uncollected and unpublished material to illuminate Macrone's career, in the course of which he became the friend and publisher of Dickens, Thackeray, and Moore. It is the first publication of a manuscript which was believed to be lost. It provides a hitherto unknown contemporary perspective on Sir Walter Scott's life and work. It includes an introduction by the editor and a specially commissioned essay by Gillian Hughes giving a detailed account of Macrone's career based largely on uncollected or unpublished material. It establishes a new context for James Hogg's Anecdotes of Scott.
