Johns Hopkins University Press Nonverbal Sex Differences: Communication Accuracy and Expressive Style
This is the first thorough review and analysis of the extensive research literature on nonverbal sex differences among infants, children, and adults. Judith A. Hall summarizes and explores data on nonverbal skill and style differences, including the sending and judging of nonverbal cues of emotion, facial expression, gaze, interpersonal distance, touch, body movement, and nonverbal speech characteristics. Popular authors and scholars alike have advanced the argument that women's low social status has accounted for their nonverbal skills and expressive style. Hall pays particular attention to examining this "oppressive hypothesis". Explanations for nonverbal sex differences surely have much to do with cultural expectations and social learning processes, she argues, but to unravel the exact causal influences is a complex task, one that has hardly begun.

Island Press Getting to the Heart of Science Communication: A Guide to Effective Engagement
At a community fire day in a northern California town several years ago, author Faith Kearns gave a talk on building fire-safe houses able to withstand increasingly common wildfires. Much to her surprise, Kearns was confronted by an audience member whose house had recently burned. What she thought was straightforward, helpful scientific information had instead retraumatised audience members, forcing Kearns to re-evaluate her approach. Like Kearns, scientists today working on controversial issues from climate change to drought to COVID-19 are finding themselves more often in the middle of deeply traumatising or polarized conflicts. It is no longer enough for scientists to communicate a scientific topic clearly. They must not only be experts in their fields of study, but also experts in navigating the thoughts, feelings, and opinions of members of the public they engage with, and with each other. And the conversations are growing more fraught. In Getting to the Heart of Science Communication, Faith Kearns has penned a succinct guide for navigating the human relationships critical to the success of practice-based science. Using interviews and personal anecdotes, as well as her own insights as a field scientist, Kearns walks readers through the evolution of science communication and how emotional and high-stakes issues have shaped communication. The meat of the book lies in the middle chapters, where Kearns offers key tools for communicators: listening, working with conflict, and understanding trauma, loss, and healing. She concludes the book with a substantive discussion on diversity, equity, and inclusion in the sciences, and advice to readers for handling their own emotional needs in an unpredictable career landscape. This meticulously researched volume takes science communication to the next level, helping scientists see the value of listening as well as talking, understanding power dynamics in relationships, and addressing the roles of trauma, loss, grief, and healing. This book will particularly resonate with early to mid-career scientists, graduate students, and researchers, especially those in applied sciences who work closely with the public.

Cornell University Press From Silence to Voice: What Nurses Know and Must Communicate to the Public
Praise for previous editions— "The book is written by two journalists who have taken on the nursing profession more or less the way we take on patients with a life-threatening condition that is curable but requires both intensive and long-term care. The diagnosis, according to Buresh and Gordon, is silence. By being silent, we miss the opportunity to show ourselves as consequential in the delivery of healthcare. The remedy for silence, according to the authors, is voice—our voices raised in conversation first and foremost with our families, friends, and patients, and also with the general public."—Nursing Spectrum "This is an invaluable book for all nurses, especially those who are proud of being nurses and who have always wanted to make others understand our passion."—Nursing Standard To get the resources and respect they need, nurses have long had to be advocates for themselves and their profession, not just for their patients. For a decade, From Silence to Voice has provided nurses with the tools they need to explain the breath and complexity of nursing work. Bernice Buresh and Suzanne Gordon have helped nurses around the world speak up and convey to the public that nursing is more than dedication and caring—it demands specialized knowledge, expertise across a range of medical technologies, and decision-making about life-and-death issues. "Nurses and nursing organizations," they write, "must go out and tell the public what nurses really do so that patients can actually get the benefit of their expert care." The comprehensively revised and updated third edition of From Silence to Voice will help nurses construct messages using a range of traditional and new social media that accurately describe the true nature of their work. Because nurses are busy, the communication techniques in this book are designed to integrate naturally into nurses' everyday lives and to complement nurses' work with patients and families.

Springer Science+Business Media Satellite Communication Systems Design
Writing a comprehensive book on satellite communications requires the com mand of many technical disciplines and the availability of up-to-date information on international recommendations, system architectures, and equipment stand ards. It is therefore necessary to involve many authors, each possessing a good level of knowledge in a particular discipline. The problem of using a coherent and unambiguous set of definitions and basic terms has been solved by including in the book all the background information needed for understanding satellite communication systems, without any major reference to other textbooks specializing in particular disciplines. The obvious consequence of this approach has been the large size of the book, with the advantages, however, of practically complete independence from other books, more systematic discussion of the subject matter, and better readability. After the required background information, emphasis has been placed on the discussion of techniques and system design criteria rather than on specific equipment implementation or description of particular systems. The book may be divided in five parts as follows: • The first five chapters provide most of the required background information. • Chapter 6 is an introductory outline of satellite communication systems. • Chapters 7 to 13 deal with the various aspects of technical system design. • Chapter 14 discusses system economics. • Chapter 15 provides a brief insight into some foreseeable future develop ments of satellite communications.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Microbial Communication and Microbiota-Host Interactivity: Neurophysiological, Biotechnological, and Biopolitical Implications
In light of recent data, microorganisms are construed in the present monograph as living organisms that are capable of communication and advanced social organization, which conspicuously manifests itself in the formation of extracellular matrix-enclosed biofilms. Microbial communication signals, including quorum sensing pheromones, are of paramount importance both for interactions among microbial cells and the dialogue between them and the host organism. The monograph sums up the facts that demonstrate the complexity of the human organism-inhabiting microbial consortium comprising a wide variety of biofilm-forming eukaryotic, bacterial and archean cells. The microbiota is involved in maintaining microecological, metabolic, epigenetic, neuro-endocrine and immune homeostasis that normally stabilizes the brain-gut-microbiota axis. Microbially produced neuroactive chemicals include peptides, amino acids, amines, short-chain fatty acids, purines and gaseous substances that are used as nutrients, effectors, cofactors and signals by the host organism. In the present-day world, the human organism has to deal with a large number of environmental stress factors that overpower the organism's protective system and disrupt the functioning of symbiotic microbiota predominantly located in the gastro-intestinal (GI) tract. Homeostasis disruption may impede communication between microbial cells and the human organism and cause physical or mental health problems. The operation of the brain-gut-microbiota axis can be improved by useful microorganisms (probiotics) including psychobiotics that directly impact the human brain and behavior. In the authors' opinion, the lifelong epigenetic developmental program of the organism can be ameliorated and genetic and epigenetic disruptions in the human metagenome (comprising all nuclear, mitochondrial and microbial genes) can be prevented by supplementing the diet with traditional, organic and individualized functional food items that relieve the effects of various detrimental stress factors and agents. A reasonably designed lifestyle based on gut microbiota optimization will undoubtedly help human individuals live a decent healthy life and attain active longevity. Current research on the population organization, social behavior and intercellular communication of microorganisms is expected to promote the interdisciplinary dialogue between microbiology, cytology and ethology. In addition, the results of this research are of significant potential importance for medicine and biotechnology.

Plural Publishing Inc The Filter Approach: Social Communication Skills for Students with Autism Spectrum Disoders
The FILTER Approach: Social Communication Skills for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders is a social skills curriculum workbook for use by speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and professionals providing social skills training to students or individuals with high-functioning autism, social communication disorders, and/or social anxiety. The number of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) is growing at an alarming rate and parents report social skill deficits as their major concern. SLPs are faced with providing social communication language therapy to this growing population. The author created this curriculum after verbal attempts to teach the concept of using a "social filter" to students with high-functioning autism. "He/She has no filter" is a common expression for a socially inappropriate or abrasive person. However, the connection between a literal and figurative filter makes little sense to high-functioning ASD students. Research and experience confirm the rote memory skills of children with high-functioning ASD and the workbook capitalizes on this to provide a simple, yet memorable tool for conversation. The F.I.L.T.E.R. curriculum first teaches the literal vs. figurative filter concept and then presents an acronym for connecting the concept to social skills that will help students before, during and after conversation.F - Facial clues: look for information about how someone is feelingI - Inappropriate: avoid "red light" comments and topicsL - Listen: tune in to the person talking and tune out distractionsT - Target: are you hitting or missing the target in conversation?E - End the conversation (and start it) at the right timeR - Repair mistakes made in conversationSchool-based SLPs and school counselors will find this approach beneficial in explaining and then connecting the conversation filter to critical social skill areas. It provides ease of recall by using an acronym and contains a variety of activities for each social skill area: scenarios, theme-related idioms and expressions, if/then and self-reflection sections, and preview/review questions for each section.

Emerald Publishing Limited Social Conflict and Harmony: Tourism in China's Multi-ethnic Communities
The book examines the extent to which Coser's (1956) 16 propositions can apply to tourism impact studies and, where possible, to enhance, deepen and challenge the original theory, using evidence from communities in China that differ from the context used by Coser. The combination of ethnographic description and sociologically-oriented analysis, drawing upon both Chinese and western paradigms that are, at times very different in their underlying value system, challenges several of Coser's suppositions. The book will also draw upon subsequent publications by the authors, both severally and separately. These publications have utilised different concepts and paradigms, including for example the use of Valene Smith's concept of the 'culture broker', Turner's concepts of marginalised peoples, and the paradigms of constructionism and interpretive research work used in other studies by the authors. The sum of the work, it is suggested, adds to our canon of knowledge about social conflict in tourism development as well as impacts of tourism on disadvantaged ethnic communities in China.

Rowman & Littlefield The Dismembered Community: Bataille, Blanchot, Leiris, and the Remains of Laure
This book examines the intersecting communitarian endeavors of Georges Bataille, Maurice Blanchot, Michel Leiris, and Colette Peignot, known posthumously as Laure. Through detailed analysis of a series of interlocking texts that the four authors write on, for, and to one another on such topics as love, friendship, and fraternity, it explores these authors' theoretical elaborations of community, their actual communities, and the relation between the two. At the center of this investigation stands the controversial figure of Laure, who functions both during her life and after her premature death as a catalyst for the communities formed around her by a group of men. Not only the first book-length study of the intersecting relationships and theoretical musings of four writers who contested the boundaries between reflection and affection, this book is also the first extended critical investigation in any language of the legacy of one of the most provocative and elusive figures of the twentieth-century French avant-garde.

Rowman & Littlefield The Millennium Election: Communication in the 2000 Campaign
Before Florida, there was a campaign. Though traditional on many levels of communication among candidates, media, and voters, the 2000 campaign also featured new and innovative communication approaches in the presidential, Congressional, and state elections. The Millennium Election highlights some of the most important campaign communication from the 2000 contests, looking at candidates' political messages, the media's campaign coverage, the impact of the Internet, and the political socialization of young voters. The authors' diverse studies and viewpoints show that we still have much to learn about traditional candidate-voter interactions as well as new forms of political communication—and these forms must work together to engage a new generation of voters.

University of California Press The Devil in History: Communism, Fascism, and Some Lessons of the Twentieth Century
The Devil in History is a provocative analysis of the relationship between communism and fascism. Reflecting the author's personal experiences within communist totalitarianism, this is a book about political passions, radicalism, utopian ideals, and their catastrophic consequences in the twentieth century's experiments in social engineering. Vladimir Tismaneanu brilliantly compares communism and fascism as competing, sometimes overlapping, and occasionally strikingly similar systems of political totalitarianism. He examines the inherent ideological appeal of these radical, revolutionary political movements, the visions of salvation and revolution they pursued, the value and types of charisma of leaders within these political movements, the place of violence within these systems, and their legacies in contemporary politics. The author discusses thinkers who have shaped contemporary understanding of totalitarian movements--people such as Hannah Arendt, Raymond Aron, Isaiah Berlin, Albert Camus, Francois Furet, Tony Judt, Ian Kershaw, Leszek Kolakowski, Richard Pipes, and Robert C. Tucker. As much a theoretical analysis of the practical philosophies of Marxism-Leninism and Fascism as it is a political biography of particular figures, this book deals with the incarnation of diabolically nihilistic principles of human subjugation and conditioning in the name of presumably pure and purifying goals. Ultimately, the author claims that no ideological commitment, no matter how absorbing, should ever prevail over the sanctity of human life. He comes to the conclusion that no party, movement, or leader holds the right to dictate to the followers to renounce their critical faculties and to embrace a pseudo-miraculous, a mystically self-centered, delusional vision of mandatory happiness.

Teachers' College Press Meeting Families Where They Are: Building Equity Through Advocacy with Diverse Schools and Communities
This book presents an in-depth discussion of how human disability and parental advocacy have been constructed in American society, including recommendations for a more authentically inclusive vision of parental advocacy. The authors provide a cultural–historical view of the conflation of racism, classism, and ableism that have left a deeply entrenched stigma-one that positions children with disabilities and children of color as less valuable than others. To redress these inequities, the authors offer a working model of co-constructed advocacy designed to benefit all families. Because advocacy is not a "one size fits all" endeavor, the authors propose meeting families where they are and learning their strengths and needs, while preparing and repositioning families to empower themselves.Book Features: Takes a cultural–historical view that explores the reasons why individuals with disabilities are so stigmatized. Shows how the intersection of different stigmatized identity markers, such as poverty, race, and language, have been woven into negative interpretations of "difference." Celebrates the history of parent advocacy in the United States since World War II. Examines how social and racial privilege have dictated which parent voices are heard. Proposes collaborative approaches that can produce more authentic and more representative advocacy. Explores the motivations and purposes that drive parent advocacy.

The University of Chicago Press Victorian Scientific Naturalism: Community, Identity, Continuity
Victorian Scientific Naturalism examines the secular creeds of the generation of intellectuals who, in the wake of The Origin of Species, wrested cultural authority from the old Anglican establishment while installing themselves as a new professional scientific elite. These scientific naturalists - led by biologists, physicists, and mathematicians such as William Kingdon Clifford, Joseph Dalton Hooker, Thomas Henry Huxley, and John Tyndall - sought to persuade both the state and the public that scientists, not theologians, should be granted cultural authority, since their expertise gave them special insight into society, politics, and even ethics. In Victorian Scientific Naturalism, Gowan Dawson and Bernard Lightman bring together new essays by leading historians of science and literary critics that recall these scientific naturalists, in light of recent scholarship that has tended to sideline them, and that reevaluate their place in the broader landscape of nineteenth-century Britain. Ranging in topic from daring climbing expeditions in the Alps to the maintenance of aristocratic protocols of conduct at Kew Gardens, these essays offer a series of new perspectives on Victorian scientific naturalism - as well as its subsequent incarnations in the early twentieth century - that together provide an innovative understanding of the movement centering on the issues of community, identity, and continuity.

John Wiley and Sons Ltd Re-Imagining Political Community: Studies in Cosmopolitan Democracy
Understanding world politics today means acknowledging that the state is no longer in international relations. The interstate system is increasingly challenged by new transnational forces and institutions. Multinational companies, cross-border coalitions of social interest groups, globally oriented media groups and a growing number of international agencies influence interstate decisions and set the agenda of world politics. While these phenomena have been discussed in the recent literature of international relations, little attention has been given to their impact on political life within and between communities. Re-imagining Political Community explores the changing meaning of political community in a world of regional and global social and economic relations. From a variety of academic backgrounds, its authors reconsider some of the key terms of political organization, such as legitimacy, sovereignty, identity and citizenship. The common approach of all the authors is to generate an innovative account of what democracy means today and how it can be reconceptualized to include subnational as well as transnational levels of political organization. Inspired by Immanuel Kant's cosmopolitan principles, the authors conclude that today there are favourable conditions for a further development of democracy - locally, nationally, regionally and globally. Re-imagining Political Community will be welcomed by students of politics, political theory, international relations and peace studies, as well as those working in international organizations and engaged in transnational activities. Emerald Publishing Limited Community and Ecology: Dynamics of Place, Sustainability and Politics
Humans live in social communities that are embedded ecologically within overlapping biophysical environments. This volume facilitates an ongoing dialogue between community sociologists and environmental sociologists about how humans interact with each other in social communities and with biophysical environments in an ecological community. The chapters in this volume contribute to three related areas of scholarship. First, chapters two through four deal with the ecological and social significance of place. The authors of these three chapters examine different theoretical and substantive dilemmas regarding place and ecology. Their scholarship investigates the significance of place across a range of natural, modified, and built environments. Second, chapters five through seven deal with the challenges of local sustainability. The authors of these three chapters perform scholarship on social, economic and ecological dimensions of local sustainability. Third, chapters eight through eleven deal with local environmental politics. The authors of these four chapters examine the various dynamics of local political processes in communities across three continents. These scholars explicitly examine how the structure of political opportunities in different localities affects the mobilization necessary to recognize and ameliorate environmental problems. We anticipate that this volume furthers the cross-pollination of ideas between community sociologists and environmental sociologists. Ultimately, the heightened and sustained communication between these two groups of scholars may lead to emergent theoretical, methodological, and substantive insights that may contribute to the discipline of sociology more generally. Different sections of the book address ecological and social significance of place, challenges of local sustainability, and local environmental politics. The book enhances the interplay of ideas between community sociologists and environmental sociologists, and stimulates thought that will contribute to the general field of sociology.

University of Minnesota Press Deconstructing Communication: Representation, Subject, and Economies of Exchange
Situated at the intersection of current debates regarding meaning and representation, this text casts doubt on the seeming innocence of the activity of communication. Using poststructuralist literary theory and philosophy, Chang argues that modern communication theories fail to provide an adequate explanation for how communication is possible. Through a detailed examination of the basis of the idea of communication - with its semantic core of "commonality" or the transcendence of difference - Chang argues against the tendency of theorists to value understanding over misunderstanding, clarity over ambiguity, order over disorder. To this end the author revisits the thought of Derrida and considers deconstruction in general. Specifically, he uses the critique of the phenomenological tradition emerging from poststructuralism to clarify the commitments and assumptions inherent in models of communication.

Boydell & Brewer Ltd Ramon Llull as a Vernacular Writer: Communicating a New Kind of Knowledge
The authors maintain that Llull was an atypical 'scholar' because he enjoyed a form of access to knowledge that differed from the norm and because he organized the production and dissemination of his writings in a creative and unconventional fashion. Ramon Llull (1232-1316), mystic, missionary, philosopher and author of narrative and poetry, wrote both in Latin and in the vernacular claiming he had been given a new science to unveil the Truth. This book shows why his Latin andvernacular books cannot be read as if they had been written in isolation from one another. Llull was an atypical 'scholar' because he enjoyed a form of access to knowledge that differed from the norm and because he organized theproduction and dissemination of his writings in a creative and unconventional fashion. At a time when learned texts and university culture were conveyed for the most part using the vehicle of Latin, he wrote a substantial proportion of his theological and scientific works in his maternal Catalan while, at the same time, he was deeply involved in the circulation of such works in other Romance languages. These circumstances do not preclude the fact that a considerable number of the titles comprising his extensive output of more than 260 works were written directly in Latin, or that he had various books which were originally conceived in Catalan subsequently translated or adapted intoLatin.
